Interaktivno pripovedništvo v videoigrah
Interactive Storytelling in Videogames
Podrobneje opisujem tri oblike pripovedništva v videoigrah, in sicer nastajajočo pripoved, pripoved skozi okolje in pripoved skozi akcije igralca.
Kratka dogodivščina psička Leopolda popelje igralca skozi svet z absurdno zgodovino, ki jo igralec spoznava sproti, prek same igre in z opazovanjem okolice.
Video games have been a part of the entertainment industry for more than five decades now, yet their development has been quite unsteady. Until recently, narrative has taken a backseat in video games, as their prime intention remained simply to entertain.
My thesis compares the characteristics of narrative in video games to the classic narrative forms and those that are only present in the interactive media. In the first part of the thesis, I focused on three main approaches to narrative in video games, i.e. emerging storytelling, environmental storytelling and storytelling through gameplay. The main characteristic of the first two approaches is that the story is meant to be discovered by the player on their own, which deepens the player’s feeling of immersion into the story. Storytelling through gameplay further increases such feelings of immersion, as the thoughtfully designed game systems tie the player’s actions directly to the development of the story. The interactive nature of video games offers unique means of storytelling while bringing forth certain unprecedented issues: ludonarrative and systemic dissonance may affect the player’s ability to comprehend the story and the storyteller's message.
The second part of the thesis presents the concept design of my own video game, which includes all three of the aforementioned storytelling techniques. The short adventure of a dog named Leopold takes the player on a journey through a world with an absurd history that the player slowly discovers through gameplay and by observing the environment.
