Photocatalytic sol-gel/P25 TiO [sub] 2 coatings for water treatment : degradation of 7 selected pharmaceuticals (CO3:IL02)

Abstract: The effect of different water matrices on the photocatalytic degradation of dissolved pharmaceuticals was explored. The focus was on the degradation efficiencies in wastewater effluent from a bioreactor and water effluent from a central wastewater treatment plant and comparing the results with degradation in deionized H2O. The compounds tested included: oxytetracycline, marbofloxacin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, phenytoin, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole. For the experiments performed in this study, a compact packed-bed photocatalytic reactor was used in which the hybrid TiO2 photocatalyst (sol-gel/P25) was deposited on ~3 mm glass beads. As expected, the reactions proceed more slowly in wastewater than in deionized water, yet it is shown that removal of the compounds from the water is still possible even when other organic molecules are present. Total organic carbon measurements have shown that complete mineralization takes place albeit at slower rates than the initial degradation of parent compounds. The results show that an acidic pH can increase the reaction rates and the adsorption on the photocatalyst surface. Analyses of the degradation intermediates were performed using tandem liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry system. Additionally, X-ray absorption spectroscopy was applied to get insight into the local structure of the photocatalyst before and after use. Understanding the effects that different wastewater compositions have on photocatalytic reactions will help to refine the potential applications of the technology.

Toxins in microalgae : Group project - final report

Abstract: The aim of the project is to develop a detection system for the toxic algae Alexandrium minutum which can be than used as part of biosensor. First, we will isolate a single-domain antibody from a pre-immune library, then subclone its sequence in different vectors and produce it. Finally, we will design alternative ELISA methods and choose the most suitable to quantify the microalgae in water samples.

Mikrobiološka aktivnost v obdobju pojavljanja polisaharidno bogatih makroagregatov v Tržaškem zalivu : diplomsko delo

Abstract: V spomladanskem obdobju leta 2004 smo raziskovali razporeditev združbe heterotrofnih bakterij v vzhodnem delu Tržaškega zaliva. Bakterijske celice smo šteli pod epifluorescentnm mikroskopom. Bakterijsko produkcijo smo merili z metodo asimilacije radioaktivno označene spojine 3H-timidin in 3H-leucin. Število bakterij na dveh postajah Tržaškega zaliva se je spreminjalo od 0,2z109 do 2,1z109 celic/L. Najbolj izrazit padec bakterijske biomase smo beležili v maju, visoko biomaso pa smo beležili v času pojava sluzastih makroagregatov. Vzorce sluzastih makroagregatov smo pregledovali s pomočjo različnih mikroskopskih tehnik (svetlobni, epifluorescentni in elektronski mikroskop). V obdobju pojava sluzi smo izolirali posamezne bakterijske kolonije in jim določili osnovne morfološke znake. Z metodo fluorescentne in situ hibridizacije (FISH) smo opravili preliminarne analize določanje bakterijskih filogenetskih skupin. Bakterijske kolonije smo uporabili v dveh poskusih obogatitve morske vode z anorganskimi in organskimi hranili. Organsko hranilo je predstavljala sluz z visokim deležem polisaharidov. Odziv bakterijske združbe na dodatek hranil je bil hiter in se kaže v povečanju števila bakterijskih celic in visoki bakterijski produkciji že v prvih 24 urah. Sluz je heterotrofnim bakterijam služila kot vir energije in ogljika. V ta namen smo sledili koncentracijam celokupnih ogljikovih hidratov in proteinov. Spremembe v koncentraciji celokupnih ogljikovih hidratov so najverjetneje posledica povečanja bakterijske encimatske aktivnosti in istočasnega ponovnega privzema sproščenih ogljikovih hidratov. Preliminarni rezultati kažejo na velik pomen bakterijske heterotrofne združbe v procesih pretvorbe organske snovi v morskem ekosistemu.
