Habitus + Capital = : diplomsko delo

Abstract: Diplomsko delo Habitus + Capital = v osnovi raziskuje vlogo fotografije kot orodja za širjenje percepcije posameznika ter posledično družbe. Naloga je zastavljena tako, da teoretični del zagovarja praktični, kar z drugimi besedami pomeni kombinacijo tehnik, s katerimi so predstavljena področja socialno dokumentarne fotografije ter njenega vpliva. V kombinaciji z terapevtsko vlogo fotografskega medija se naloga dotika vprašanja, ali družbeno okolje, v katerem živimo, spreminja posameznikovo razmišljanje in na daljše časovno obdobje posledično tudi družbo ter obratno. V teoretičnem delu na začetku spoznamo osebni pogled avtorja na fotografijo, skozi katerega je predstavljeno poglavje o fotografiji kot orodju za širjenje percepcije. Nato so predstavljeni osnovni koncepti ter razmišljanje na podlagi ugotovitev drugega dela knjige General Sociology, ki so osredotočeni na razumevanje naslova diplomskega dela. Sledi krajša predstavitev zgodovine fotografije, ki se v nadaljevanju osredotoča na ključne spremembe pri dojemanju fotografije kot medija. V tem kontekstu spoznamo tudi razlike med reportažnim, dokumentarnim in sodobnim pristopom do teme. V glavnem delu spoznamo več o pomembnih avtorjih, ki so pripevali izredna dela, vezana na terapevtsko noto fotografije, za konec pa sledi opis serije socialno dokumentarnih fotografij (praktični del) ter kako je ta povezana s celotno zasnovo. Pri izdelavi praktičnega dela naloge, torej serije socialno dokumentarnih fotografij, ki so nastale v obdobju enega leta, so glavno vlogo pri izbiri tehnike in pristopa do teme igrala naslednja svetovno znana imena: Andreas Gursky, Edward Burtynsky, Stephen Shore ter Pierre Bourdieu. S pomočjo serije fotografij so v nadaljevanju naloge prikazani različni dosežki družbe na izbranih območjih, ki odražajo raziskovalno vprašanje. Namen fotografij je predvsem spodbuditi mlade k raziskovanju samega sebe ter vzpostavitev osebnega jaza v kombinaciji z družbenim okoljem, saj lahko tako vizije še posebej v svetu umetnosti prerastejo navidezne meje, ki jih poznamo kot rezultat bodisi kulturnega, socialnega bodisi simbolnega vidika kapitala.

Winning combination of Cu and Fe oxide clusters with an alumina support for low-temperature catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds

Abstract: A γ-alumina support functionalized with transition metals is one of the most widely used industrial catalysts for the total oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as air pollutants at higher temperatures (280−450 °C). By rational design of a bimetal CuFe-γ-alumina catalyst, synthesized from a dawsonite alumina precursor, the activity in total oxidation of toluene as a model VOC at a lower temperature (200−380 °C) is achieved. A fundamental understanding of the catalyst and the reaction mechanism is elucidated by advanced microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations as well as by temperature-programmed surface techniques. The nature of the metal−support bonding and the optimal abundance between Cu−O−Al and Fe−O−Al species in the catalysts leads to synergistic catalytic activity promoted by small amounts of iron (Fe/Al = 0.005). The change in the metal oxide−cluster alumina interface is related to the nature of the surfaces to which the Cu atoms attach. In the most active catalyst, the CuO6 octahedra are attached to 4 Al atoms, while in the less active catalyst, they are attached to only 3 Al atoms. The oxidation of toluene occurs via the Langmuir−Hinshelwood mechanism. The presented material introduces a prospective family of low-cost and scalable oxidation catalysts with superior efficiency at lower temperatures.

Odstopanja od motošportne fotografije

Abstract: Diplomsko delo Odstopanja od motošportne fotografije obravnava dva žanra športne fotografije. Naloga je razdeljena na dva dela. Ker je v središče praktičnega dela diplome postavljena tema avtomobilističnih dirk, prvi del govori o motošportu in fotografiji, ki se ukvarja s tem področjem. Predstavlja njen razvoj od začetka do danes. Dotika pa se tudi njenega tehnološkega razvoja. Pri izdelavi fotografske serije ni bila uporabljena klasična reportažna fotografija, zato se drugi del posveča osebnemu pristopu fotografiranja športa, katerega končni izdelki so konceptualna dela, ki jih nismo vajeni videvati v medijih in reklamah, saj ne prikazujejo vrhuncev športnega dogajanja in zmagovalcev. Za temo raziskovanja je bilo določeno, kako lahko fotograf predstavi samega sebe skozi fotografijo športa. Namen je, da bi bralec spoznal, da je fotografska serija, ki na prvi pogled ni umetniške narave, lahko osebno izpovedna. Po teoretičnem delu sledi opis praktičnega dela diplomske naloge, fotografske serije z naslovom Barve hitrosti. Ta ne predstavlja motošporta kot takega, ampak avtorja in njegov pogled kot oboževalca tovrstnega športa, ki ne posveča pozornosti zgolj avtom in dirkačem, temveč tudi gledalcem, mehanikom, atmosferi in detajlom.

Geotourism in Arcos-Pains Karst Region, Minas Gerais, Brazil : dissertation

Abstract: Knowing the geological evolution of Earth surface allows identifying various natural attractions (biotic and abiotic). It makes possible the use of the most differentiated resources for the practice of tourism. The Arcos-Pains Karst Region has excellent potential for geotourism use. Examples of geosites include the Santuario and Brega Caves, the Dry Valley in the Corumbá region, and the Mastodonte Cave, where fossils of the Haplomastodon waringi mastodon species were found. However, public investment policies aiming at the environmental preservation of this heritage are still minimal or absent. The region also suffers tremendous anthropic pressure due to the extraction and processing of limestone, agribusiness, urban expansion and informal tourism. The process of inventorying and quantifying geosites is an essential tool for defining geoconservation strategies since it is not possible to protect all the geodiversity of the planet. The attributes analysed should integrate several criteria that take into account the intrinsic characteristics of each geosite, its potential use and the level of protection required. Regarding this research, the objective is approaching karst and speleological heritage, intending to define geosites for scientific, educational and tourist use at the Arcos-Pains Karst Region. The purpose of the inventory is to develop a geotourism project that provides essential information for better territorial management. It is also intended to assist environmental agencies in the enterprises’ environmental licensing processes installed in the region. Among the thirty-five (35) sites evaluated, eleven (11) presented above-average use-values in all categories analysed. Also, they presented national relevance and were classified as geosites. In addition to these, another sixteen (16) sites scored sufficiently to be categorised with national relevance. Within the geosites, one (1) was of international relevance: the São Francisco River Canyon. Considering the results, it is essential to deepen the research regarding karst dynamics to equalise geodiversity preservation while allowing its use to benefit society.

Uncovering the life of a transgender person in Pakistan : diploma thesis

Abstract: Documentary photography is the narrative based on facts and records of events in a report format. Although racial injustice and biased differences were common initially, the underlying objectivity of this thesis involves the main aim to display the utmost reality. It is a way to report stark realities that come into perspective with images of persons, places, or events. On the other hand, it is a form of representation from the photographer’s point of view. Although, there is no denying that a picture represents a thousand words and displays several perspectives. As a source of revealing the importance of documentary photography in the Indian subcontinent, this thesis will help to expose the sore point of a country that belittles a community of transgender persons. This photography documentary is showing the cruelty that is confronted by transgender persons in Pakistan. Based upon the timeline of nine months, the comparative study of two transgender persons reflects the complexity of their survival. My photography documentary has captured and frozen the instances from the daily existence of transgender persons, focusing on their lifestyle, living conditions, community environment, and personal life. Transgender identity, by birth or by choice, is a chilling fact marginalizing a person to a community where existence is difficult.

Numerical modelling of dendritic solidification based on phase field formulation and adaptive meshless solution procedure : dissertation

Abstract: The main aim of the dissertation is to develop a novel numerical approach for an accurate and computationally efficient modelling of dendritic solidification, which is one of the most commonly observed phenomena in the industrial casting of the metallic alloys. The size and the morphology of dendritic structures as well as the distribution of the solute within them critically effect the mechanical and the electro-chemical properties of the solidified material. The numerical modelling of dendritic solidification can be applied for an in-depth understanding and optimisation of the casting process under various solidification conditions and chemical compositions of the alloy under consideration. The dendritic solidification of pure materials and dilute multi-component alloys is considered in the dissertation. The phase field formulation is applied for the modelling of dendritic solidification. The formulation is based on the introduction of the continuous phase field variable that is constant in the bulk of the solid and liquid phases. The phase field variable has a smooth transition from the value denoting the solid phase to the value denoting the liquid phase at the solid-liquid interface over the characteristic interface thickness. A phase field model yields a system of coupled non-linear parabolic partial differential equations that govern the evolution of the phase field and other thermodynamic variables. The meshless radial basis function-generated finite-differences (RBF-FD) method is used for the spatial discretisation of the system of partial differential equations. The forward Euler scheme is applied for the temporal discretisation. Fifth-degree polyharmonic splines are used as the shape functions in the RBF-FD method. A second-order accurate RBF-FD method is achieved by augmenting the shape functions with monomials up to the second degree. The adaptive solution procedure is developed in order to speed-up the calculations. The procedure is based on the quadtree domain decomposition of a rectangular computational domain into rectangular computational sub-domains of different sizes. Each quadtree sub-domain has its own regular or scattered distribution of computational nodes in which the RBF-FD method and the forward Euler scheme apply for the discretisation of the system of partial differential equations. The adaptive solution procedure dynamically ensures the prescribed highest density of the computational nodes at the solid-liquid interface and the lowest-possible density in the bulk of the solid and liquid phases. The adaptive time-stepping is employed to further speed-up the calculations. The stable time step in the forward Euler scheme depends on the density of the computational nodes; hence, different time steps can be used in quadtree sub-domains with different node densities. The main originality of the present work is the use of the RBF-FD method for the thorough analysis of the impact of the type of the node distribution and the size of a local sub-domain to the accuracy when the phase field modelling of dendritic solidification for arbitrary preferential growth directions is considered. It is shown how the use of the scattered node distribution reduces the undesirable mesh-induced anisotropy effects, present when the partial differential equations are discretisied on a regular node distribution. The main advantage of the RBF-FD method for the phase field modelling of dendritic growth is the simple discretisation of the partial differential equations on the scattered node distributions. The RBF-FD method is, for the first time, used in combination with the spatial-temporal adaptive solution procedure based on the quadtree domain decomposition. The adaptive solution procedure successfully speeds-up the calculations; however, the advantages of the use of the scattered node distribution are partly compromised due to the impact of regularity in the quadtree domain decomposition.

Donor doping of K0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramics with strontium and its implications to grain size, phase composition and crystal structure

Abstract: In this study, the particular effects of A-site donor doping in a lead-free piezoceramic material K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) doped with Sr2+, i.e., the crystal-structure change, the secondary-phase formation and the grain-size decrease, were investigated. The already-reported causes of these effects upon doping KNN were critically discussed and a mechanism of the effects’ formation was suggested and experimentally supported with advanced analytical methods. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses proved that the Sr occupies the perovskite A-sublattice, and locally modifies the KNN monoclinic structure to cubic. With the help of Sr K-edge EXAFS and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, the Sr was found to be homogenously distributed in the KNN perovskite lattice with 0.5, 1 and 2% Sr and no Sr segregation on the nano level was found in any of the studied samples with transmission electron microscopy. Introducing Sr into the A-sublattice, as well as accounting for the charge-compensating A-site vacancies in the starting composition, causes increasing lattice disorder and microstrain, as determined from a Rietveld refinement of the synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. Above 2% Sr the system segregates the A-site vacancies in a secondary phase in order to release the chemical pressure, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy. All these effects result in an increasing number of low-angle grain boundaries that limit the grain growth and finally lead to a significant grain-size decrease.
