iPTF Discoveries of Recent Type Ia Supernovae
L. Hangard, Tanja Petrushevska, 2015, other component parts

Abstract: The intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (ATel #4807) reports the discovery and classification of the following Type Ia SNe. Our automated candidate vetting to distinguish a real astrophysical source (1.0) from bogus artifacts (0.0) is powered by three generations of machine learning algorithms: RB2 (Brink et al. 2013MNRAS.435.1047B), RB4 (Rebbapragada et al. 2015AAS...22543402R) and RB5 (Wozniak et al. 2013AAS...22143105W). See ATel #7112 for additional details. The approved classification (and/or subsequent) spectra are made publicly available through WISeREP (Yaron & Gal-Yam 2012).

iPTF discovery and identification of bright transients
Thomas Kupfer, Tanja Petrushevska, 2017, other component parts

Abstract: The intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (ATel #4807) reports the discovery of the following bright transients. We report as ATel alerts all objects brighter than 19 mag. Our discoveries are reported in two filters: sdss-g and Mould-I, denoted as g, and I. Both are in the AB magnitude system.

Design of a highly photocatalytically active ZnO/CuWO4 nanocomposite
Saim Emin, Matjaž Valant, 2017, published scientific conference contribution abstract (invited lecture)

Abstract: We report the synthesis, photocatalytic activity and mechanistic study of a novel heterostructure (HTS) with an efficient charge separation. A ZnO/CuWO4 HTS material is reported for the first time. The nanocomposite (NC) consists of CuWO4 nanoparticles (ca. 200-400 nm) decorated with ZnO nanorods (ca. 30 nm, 100 nm length) and is shown to be a highly active photocatalyst for decomposition of model contaminants including methyl orange and terephthalic acid. The ZnO/CuWO4 interface is shown to be the key for controlling the enhanced activity of the composite material. Transient absorption spectroscopy studies demonstrated that a photoinduced charge transfer across the ZnO/CuWO4 interface increased electron-hole lifetime by 3 orders of magnitude, from < 20 s in ZnO to 30 ms in the ZnO/CuWO4 NC sample. Our findings show that through interface design efficient HTS materials can be prepared for a wide range of photocatalytic applications.

A search for Galactic transients disguised as gamma-ray bursts
Aurora Clerici, Cristiano Guidorzi, Valentina La Parola, 2015, original scientific article

Abstract: A significant fraction of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are characterised by a fast rise and exponential decay (FRED) temporal structure. This is not a distinctive feature of this class, since it is observed in many Galactic transients and is likely descriptive of a sudden release of energy followed by a diffusion process. Possible evidence has recently been reported by Tello et al. (2012) for a Galactic contamination in the sample of FRED GRBs discovered with Swift. We searched for possible Galactic intruders disguised as FRED GRBs in the Swift catalogue up to September 2014. We selected 181 FRED GRBs (2/3 with unknown redshift) and considered different subsamples. We tested the degree of isotropy through the dipole and the quadrupole moment distributions, both with reference to the Galaxy and in a coordinate-system-independent way, as well as with the two-point angular autocovariance function. In addition, we searched for possible indicators of a Galactic origin among the spectral and temporal properties of individual GRBs. We found marginal (~3 sigma) evidence for an excess of FREDs with unknown redshift towards the Galactic plane compared with what is expected for an isotropic distribution corrected for the non-uniform sky exposure. However, when we account for the observational bias against optical follow-up observations of low-Galactic latitude GRBs, the evidence for anisotropy decreases to ~2 sigma. In addition, we found no statistical evidence for different spectral or temporal properties from the bulk of cosmological GRBs. We found marginal evidence for the presence of a disguised Galactic population among Swift GRBs with unknown redshift. The estimated fraction is f=(19 +- 11)%, with an upper limit of 34% (90% confidence).

Electrical conductivity in 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhidride (PTCDA)
Gvido Bratina, Robert Hudej, Marko Zavrtanik, John Nimly Brownell, 2001, original scientific article

Abstract: The transient photoresponse in 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride was examined in metal/organic semiconductor/metal heterostructures. Electron-hole pairs are generated within the structure for fields higher than 5 X 10[sup]4 V/cm as a consequence of the exciton dissociation. The mobility of the electrons perpendicular to the molecular layers increases with the applied electric field and saturates for fields higher than 5 X 10[sup]4 V/cm.
