Method of Regularized Sources for Stokes Flow Problems with Improved Calculation of Velocity Derivatives at the Boundary

Abstract: The solution of Stokes flow problems with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions is performed by a non-singular Method of Fundamental Solutions which does not require artificial boundary, i.e. source points of fundamental solution coincide with the collocation points on the boundary. Instead of Dirac delta force, an exponential function, called blob, with a free parameter epsilon is employed, which limits to Dirac delta function when epsilon limits to zero. The solution of the problem is sought as a linear combination of the fields due to the regularized sources that coincide with the boundary and with their intensities chosen in such a way that the solution complies with the boundary conditions. A two-dimensional flow between parallel plates is chosen to assess the properties of the method. The results of the method are accurate except for the derivatives at the boundary. A correction of the method is proposed which can be used to properly assess also the derivatives at the boundary

Abstract: The NIR data were obtained with the High Acuity Wide field K-band imager mounted on the VLT (Programmes ID 082.A-0431, 0.83.A-0398, 090.A-0492, 091.A-0108, P.I. Goobar). The HAWK-I has an array of four 2048x2048 HgCdTe detectors covering a total area of 7.5'x7.5' with a sampling of 0.106"/pix per pixel. The chips are separated by a 15" gap.

Evidence for a supergalactic structure of magnetic deflection multiplets of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

Abstract: Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic-ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) energies above 1019 eV using 7 years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy–position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, because the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local large-scale structure, UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy–angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of the TA (the Hotspot and Coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data posttrial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2σ. The 10 years of data posttrial significance is 4.1σ. Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.

Search for large-scale anisotropy on arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays observed with the telescope array experiment

Abstract: Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 yr of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the R.A. is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3% ± 1.9% and a phase of 131° ± 33°. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. At the current level of statistics, the fitted result is compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the dipole structure reported by Auger.

An economic analysis of biomass potential as an opportunity to increase the share of biogas production for energy purposes in Slovenia

Abstract: One of the biggest global problems, the solution of being put in front of the scientists around the world, is endangering the environment. To preserve it, the transition from non-renewable to renewable energy sources is a rational and necessary solution. One of the energy sources with great potential in the future is biomass. In the master’s thesis, we have studied the economic analysis of the possibility of obtaining energy from biogas in Slovenia for the production of which biomass is used. For the study to be successful, it was necessary to analyse the situation in the field of renewable energy sources and biogas in the European Union and Slovenia to obtain a general picture for further analysis. By analysing the available data from previous years, we gained insight into the situation in the given area. The master’s thesis aims to show that although Slovenia has been facing the problem of a decreasing number of biogas power plants for years, the implementation of a system for obtaining energy from biogas is an economically and environmentally viable investment. The economic analysis was done for a 1 MW plant. The choice of plant size and power was made based on the Kepner-Tregoe method and the method of comparing alternatives. For the project duration of 30 years, through cash flows, as well as through various economic indicators, such as the presentation of loan calculations with a certain interest rate, internal rate of return, repayment period method, present project value, etc., the economic side of the investment is presented, which aims to show the profitability of the project.
