Unwrapping the phase portrait features of adventitious crackle for auscultation and classification: A machine learning approach
Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu Swapna, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: The paper delves into the plausibility of applying fractal, spectral, and nonlinear time series analyses for lung auscultation. The thirty-five sound signals of bronchial (BB) and pulmonary crackle (PC) analysed by fast Fourier transform and wavelet not only give the details of number, nature, and time of occurrence of the frequency components but also throw light onto the embedded air flow during breathing. Fractal dimension, phase portrait, and sample entropy help in divulging the greater randomness, antipersistent nature, and complexity of airflow dynamics in BB than PC. The potential of principal component analysis through the spectral feature extraction categorises BB, fine crackles, and coarse crackles. The phase portrait feature-based supervised classification proves to be better compared to the unsupervised machine learning technique. The present work elucidates phase portrait features as a better choice of classification, as it takes into consideration the temporal correlation between the data points of the time series signal, and thereby suggesting a novel surrogate method for the diagnosis in pulmonology. The study suggests the possible application of the techniques in the auscultation of coronavirus disease 2019 seriously affecting the respiratory system.

Unravelling the potential of phase portrait in the auscultation of mitral valve dysfunction
Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu Swapna, SREEJYOTHI S, RENJINI A, RAJ VIMAL, SANKARARAMAN SANKARANARAYANA IYER, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: The manuscript elucidates the potential of phase portrait, fast Fourier transform, wavelet, and time-series analyses of the heart murmur (HM) of normal (healthy) and mitral regurgitation (MR) in the diagnosis of valve-related cardiovascular diseases. The temporal evolution study of phase portrait and the entropy analyses of HM unveil the valve dysfunctioninduced haemodynamics. A tenfold increase in sample entropy in MR from that of normal indicates the valve dysfunction. The occurrence of a large number of frequency components between lub and dub in MR, compared to the normal, is substantiated through the spectral analyses. The machine learning techniques, K-nearest neighbour, support vector machine, and principal component analyses give 100% predictive accuracy. Thus, the study suggests a surrogate method of auscultation of HM that can be employed cost-effectively in rural health centres.

Thermal Lensing of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Solutions as Heat-Transfer Nanofluids
Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu Swapna, RAJ VIMAL, CABRERA HUMBERTO, SANKARARAMAN SANKARANARAYANA IYER, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper unwraps nanofluids’ particle dynamics with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in base fluids such as acetone, water, and ethylene glycol. Having confirmed the morphology and structure of the MWCNTs by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopic analyses, the nanofluids are prepared in three different concentrations. The nonzero absorbance at the laser wavelength, revealed through the UV−visible spectrum, makes the thermal diffusivity study of the sample by the sensitive nondestructive single beam thermal lens (TL) technique possible. The TL signal analysis by time series and fractal techniques divulges the complex particle dynamics, through phase portrait, sample entropy, fractal dimension, and Hurst exponent. The study unveils the effect of the amount of nanoparticles and the viscosity of the medium on thermal diffusivity and particle dynamics. The observed inverse relation between thermal diffusivity and viscosity is in good agreement with the Sankar−Swapna model. The complexity of particle dynamics in MWCNT nanofluids reflected through sample entropy, and fractal dimension shows an inverse relation to the base fluid’s viscosity. This paper investigates the role of viscosity of the base fluid on particle dynamics and thermal diffusivity of the nanofluid to explore its applicability in various thermal systems, thereby suggesting a method to tune the sample entropy through proper selection of base fluid.

Numerical modelling of dendritic solidification based on phase field formulation and adaptive meshless solution procedure : dissertation
Tadej Dobravec, 2021, doctoral dissertation

Abstract: The main aim of the dissertation is to develop a novel numerical approach for an accurate and computationally efficient modelling of dendritic solidification, which is one of the most commonly observed phenomena in the industrial casting of the metallic alloys. The size and the morphology of dendritic structures as well as the distribution of the solute within them critically effect the mechanical and the electro-chemical properties of the solidified material. The numerical modelling of dendritic solidification can be applied for an in-depth understanding and optimisation of the casting process under various solidification conditions and chemical compositions of the alloy under consideration. The dendritic solidification of pure materials and dilute multi-component alloys is considered in the dissertation. The phase field formulation is applied for the modelling of dendritic solidification. The formulation is based on the introduction of the continuous phase field variable that is constant in the bulk of the solid and liquid phases. The phase field variable has a smooth transition from the value denoting the solid phase to the value denoting the liquid phase at the solid-liquid interface over the characteristic interface thickness. A phase field model yields a system of coupled non-linear parabolic partial differential equations that govern the evolution of the phase field and other thermodynamic variables. The meshless radial basis function-generated finite-differences (RBF-FD) method is used for the spatial discretisation of the system of partial differential equations. The forward Euler scheme is applied for the temporal discretisation. Fifth-degree polyharmonic splines are used as the shape functions in the RBF-FD method. A second-order accurate RBF-FD method is achieved by augmenting the shape functions with monomials up to the second degree. The adaptive solution procedure is developed in order to speed-up the calculations. The procedure is based on the quadtree domain decomposition of a rectangular computational domain into rectangular computational sub-domains of different sizes. Each quadtree sub-domain has its own regular or scattered distribution of computational nodes in which the RBF-FD method and the forward Euler scheme apply for the discretisation of the system of partial differential equations. The adaptive solution procedure dynamically ensures the prescribed highest density of the computational nodes at the solid-liquid interface and the lowest-possible density in the bulk of the solid and liquid phases. The adaptive time-stepping is employed to further speed-up the calculations. The stable time step in the forward Euler scheme depends on the density of the computational nodes; hence, different time steps can be used in quadtree sub-domains with different node densities. The main originality of the present work is the use of the RBF-FD method for the thorough analysis of the impact of the type of the node distribution and the size of a local sub-domain to the accuracy when the phase field modelling of dendritic solidification for arbitrary preferential growth directions is considered. It is shown how the use of the scattered node distribution reduces the undesirable mesh-induced anisotropy effects, present when the partial differential equations are discretisied on a regular node distribution. The main advantage of the RBF-FD method for the phase field modelling of dendritic growth is the simple discretisation of the partial differential equations on the scattered node distributions. The RBF-FD method is, for the first time, used in combination with the spatial-temporal adaptive solution procedure based on the quadtree domain decomposition. The adaptive solution procedure successfully speeds-up the calculations; however, the advantages of the use of the scattered node distribution are partly compromised due to the impact of regularity in the quadtree domain decomposition.

Complete Characterization of Phase and Amplitude of Bichromatic Extreme Ultraviolet Light
Primož Rebernik Ribič, Giovanni De Ninno, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: Intense, mutually coherent beams of multiharmonic extreme ultraviolet light can now be created using seeded free-electron lasers, and the phase difference between harmonics can be tuned with attosecond accuracy. However, the absolute value of the phase is generally not determined. We present a method for determining precisely the absolute phase relationship of a fundamental wavelength and its second harmonic, as well as the amplitude ratio. Only a few easily calculated theoretical parameters are required in addition to the experimental data.

Crystal habit modification of Cu(II) isonicotinate-N-oxide complexes using gel phase crystallisation
Dipankar Ghosh, Katja Ferfolja, Žygimantas Drabavičius, Jonathan Steed, Krishna Kumar Damodaran, 20, original scientific article

Abstract: We report the crystallisation of three forms of copper(II) isonicotinate-N-oxide complex and their phase interconversion via solvent-mediated crystal to crystal transformation. The different forms of copper complex have been isolated and characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Gel phase crystallisation performed in hydrogels, low molecular weight gels and gels of tailored gelator showed crystal habit modification. Crystallisation in aqueous ethanol resulted in concomitant formation of blue (form-I) and green (form-II/IV) crystals while use of low molecular weight gel results in selective crystallization of the blue form-I under identical conditions. Comparison of gel phase and the solution state crystallisation in various solvent compositions reveals that the blue form-I is the thermodynamically stable form under ambient conditions.
