Learn to Resist : New glocal resilience strategies of cultural institutions for a solidary art production
Peter Purg, Birste Sonnenberg, 2023, radio or television broadcast, podcast, interview, press conference

Abstract: Closures of cultural institutions as a result of the Corona pandemic, right-wing populist cultural agendas (and even policies!) that work against independent media and cultural workers, and then the Russian attacks on Ukrainian cultural institutions, attempting to erase a country's cultural identity, and artistic vitality. And then there's an obviously more and more fragile nature -- the waters below and the atmospheres above us in chaos. In times of multiple, overlapping crises, cultural institutions and festivals face the challenge of addressing these grievances through glocal processes of adaptation and learning, to become RESILIENT = prepared for change and emergencies, mastering them as robustly and creatively as possible. What resilience strategies are needed at the regional and global level to enable sustainable (international) cultural production and to establish solidarity-based forms of partnership? What are the most interesting examples -- from here, and there, and beyond?

Conversing with Ghosts of the Previously Tamed
Martina Caruso, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: In this article I argue that representing animal-human relationality in contemporary video art shows how certain artists are addressing recent philosophical perspectives such as object-oriented ontology within a posthuman and post-anthropocentric paradigm. While the philosophies that treat the posthuman, from object-oriented ontology to speculative realism and vital materialism, imply a utopian refusal of hierarchy between human and non-human existence, artists may be hard-pressed to represent the described new order, which, at the moment, does not exist socially or politically.

Women in Ruins: Agnes and Dora Bulwer's landscape photographs in Post-Risorgimento Italy
Martina Caruso, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: The British photographers Agnes Bulwer (1856– 1940) and her sister Dora Ellinor Bulwer (1864– 1948) left a legacy of circa 1300 photographs and 890 negatives, date from 1890 to 1913, to the British School at Rome. The photographs are principally of landscapes taken in Rome and the surrounding countryside (the Roman Campagna) but also further afield in Italy and abroad. Many include archaeological and natural sites as well as monuments, art works, and homes and gardens in urban or rural scenes. Their landscape photographs offer a perspective that challenged the existing masculine gaze as developed in landscape photography under the colonial project of the British Empire. Unfettered by the archaeologist’s need for ascetic facts, the Bulwers pioneered an unusual vision of landscape, inspired by the progressive international environment of post-Unification Italy. Agnes and Dora Bulwer often photographed women, whether Italian peasants or travelling companions, presenting a social and gendered gaze that helps to reconsider this period in the light of a dawning international humanitarianism. In spite of their photographic legacy, Agnes and Dora Bulwer remain relatively unknown in the growing field of rediscovered early female photographers connected to archaeology or travel photography. This article reveals their work within a cross-cultural, historical and phenomenological analysis, contributing a new chapter to women’s photographic history, to travel and landscape photography and to the history of British photographers working in Italy.

The Multicultural Cities of Plovdiv and Ruse Through the Eyes of Elias Canetti and Angel Wagenstein. Two “Post-Ottoman” Jewish Writers
Giustina Selvelli, 2019, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: The aim of my presentation is to illustrate the cosmopolitan setting of the Bulgarian cities of Ruse and Plovdiv during the first half of the 20th Century, as depicted in the memoirs of two Sephardic Jewish writers: Elias Canetti (born in Ruse) and Angel Wagenstein (born in Plovdiv). Particular attention will be devoted to the role played by the Jewish communities during the Ottoman and post-Ottoman period, in terms of their contribution to the economic and cultural life of the cities. Canetti was born in 1905, in post-Ottoman Ruse, while Wagenstein was born in Plovdiv in 1922, in the after-war period. Notwithstanding these years of difference, the situation in the two cities appeared rather similar: the Sephardic Jews were still living as a distinct unity in terms of religion and language, being able to keep their own cultural identities alive. The memoirs of Canetti and Wagenstein are quite significant as they come from a later period, expressing a principle of “nostalgia” as the process of “de-Ottomanization” had almost completely been carried out. For what concerns Canetti, the memories of Ruse occupy a special place in his novel Die Gerettete Zunge (The tongue set free,1977): the writer recalls a fascinating setting, characterized by a Babylonian confusion of languages, where the most diverse nationalities crossed and met, such as Russians, Jews, Romanians, Roma and Armenians. In relation to Plovdiv, in his novel Dalech ot Toledo (Far from Toledo, 2002), apart from the Bulgarian majority, Wagenstein describes the lively presence of the Turkish, Jewish, Armenian, Greek and Roma communities, defining their patterns of daily interactions as a specific model of interethnic coexistence. By relating to the composite legacy of their home towns, Canetti and Wagenstein stand out as highly multicultural Jewish personalities, acknowledging the importance of the different cultural worlds they were exposed to, not only the Jewish and Bulgarian, but also the Turkish and in general the “Oriental” ones.

Academic career route
Iztok Arčon, unpublished invited conference lecture

Abstract: Early career scientists have developed a wealth of both generic and specialist skills opening a large number of possible career paths both within and beyond academic research. One of the problems that most PhD students, postdocs and other early career scientists find however is a significant lack of careers advice about the breadth of opportunities open to them both within academia and in commercial industry. The event will feature a number of speakers from a very diverse range of science careers, who will discuss their experiences and share advice on finding the best job opportunities.
Keywords: academic career, generic skills, PhD students, post-doctoral fellows
