Post Colonial Dilettantes
Rajat Sharma, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: The thesis begins a discourse into a need of an Indian film theory by exploring and analysing the plenitude of relevant western theories. In order to do so it lays down certain concrete relationships between ideologies, terminologies and their effect; as in what exactly post colonial means, why it is important to understand the impact of colonisation on culture and thus on one of the most mass consumed medium in India; films. The thesis explores the depths and complexity of the relationship of these two and the other influences that sprout from it for example the intensity of colonisation as a cultural project and its influence on the social reality of the people, artists, thinkers (and in our case specifically filmmakers) , who in turn reflect on this culture through various mediums including films. The thesis examines the western plethora of film theory in order to accentuate the contrast between film and cinema in the west and east and thus the subsequent need to bring forth a new ‘Eastern Film theory’.

Theory of Discourse and Semiotics
Aleš Vaupotič, 2019, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The paper begins with an analysis of a news article reporting on scientific discovery. The scientific methods are considered from the point of view of Peircean semiotics and the structuralist semiology. The usefulness of the Peircean approach in literary scholarship is demonstrated in the case of the realist novel as it is construed by Hans Vilmar Geppert. By considering Geppert’s alignment of Bakhtin’s theory of the novel with Peirce’s sign-theory the similarities and differences between the discourse-theoretical (considering also Foucault’s work) and semiotic approaches is outlined. In the second part of the text two cases of artistic research are presented, the first one, the Friedhof Laguna project from 2003, being realised in the discourse-theoretical frameworks, and the second one, 3-D visualizations of the NEWW Women Writers database from 2017, being grounded in the Peircean semiotics.

Editorial: Scalar Implicatures
Anne Reboul, Penka Stateva, 2019, short scientific article

Abstract: In 1975, Grice introduced the notion of implicature, arguing that it was more appropriate to account for a class of apparent lexical ambiguities through pragmatic processes than by multiplying lexical meanings (Modified Ockham's razor: Do not multiply meanings beyond necessity; Grice, 1975). For the past 20 years, experimental approaches have superseded purely theoretical ones, with mixed results. Paradigms using verification tasks on infelicitous sentences, with rate of pragmatic answers and reaction time as measures, have generally concluded in favor of the post-Gricean views (Bott and Noveck, 2004; Noveck and Reboul, 2008). However, some recent studies discuss additional factors affecting implicature processing and have introduced new paradigms which suggest a different conclusion (Katsos and Bishop, 2011; Breheny et al., 2013; Degen and Tanenhaus, 2015; Foppolo and Marelli, 2017; Bill et al.; Jasbi et al.; Sikos et al.). In addition, current research has shown that lexical scales may play a role in the process in keeping with neo-Gricean views. This Frontiers topic is a collection of 12 contributions in experimental pragmatics focusing on different aspects of child and adult processing of implicatures, factors affecting their rate, relevance of testing paradigms, scale diversity, cross-linguistic differences, and variation in triggers.

The Circular Economy in Adaptive Reuse: Respecting Authenticity and Integrity
Jukka Jokilehto, Saša Dobričić, Marco Acri, 2019, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: One of the main topics of discussion and research at present in the building sector is related to the principles of circular economy in a new global scenario of resilience and sustainability. Given that most of European urban areas and landscapes are considered as cultural, it derives that the circular economy should be also applied to the actions and processes of conservation and valorisation, giving thus new emphasis on the concept of adaptive reuse. Thus, it is not merely an issue of retrofitting historic buildings to respond to energy efficiency parameters, or to adapt them for the climate change threats, but much more: it is about rethinking adaptive reuse of cultural heritage (adaptive in both directions) within and overall sustainable process which intakes reflections on materials, techniques, technologies, praxes, but also policies, businesses, management and governance. This is the effort of the CLIC project, Circular Models leveraging investments in Cultural heritage adaptive reuse, in the Horizon2020 research framework, where the University of Nova Gorica is a partner. This new approach in a global market economy perspective is strongly looking backwards to the traditional building site mechanisms, techniques and procedures, as matured in logistic and technological constraints. In history though, prior of the enforcing of the conservation theory principles, the aspects of authenticity and integrity were not a reference for the builders as the materials and the technologies were usual, repetitive for centuries, while today they are essential criteria for conservation and reuse. But what does it mean today looking at circular models in adaptive reuse? Adaptive reuse refers to the need to adapt cultural heritage to new needs and uses, but circularity ask also to adapt to the cultural heritage peculiarities and fragilities. May this mean we have an additional ally for the preservation of the integrity and the authenticity, as well as for a new wave in preservation of objects, urban and cultural landscapes?

Soft set theory and hypercompositional algebras
Hashem Bordbar, 2020, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: Some applications of soft set theory and fuzzy soft set theory (as a generalization of the soft set theory) in the decision-making problem were investigated by Maji et al. in [1]. The aim of this manuscript is to apply the concept of (fuzzy) soft set theory in some hypercompositional structure and especially hyper BCK-algebra. Some notations related to our hyperstructure are introduced and some examples are provided.

Nights of the Dispossesed: Riots Unbound
Natasha Ginwala, niloufar tajeri, Gal Kirn, 2020, professional monograph

Abstract: SHARE PUB DATE: October 2020 ISBN: 9781941332634 256 pages FORMAT: Paperback LIST PRICE: $25.00£22.00 ADD TO CART Nights of the Dispossessed Riots Unbound Edited by Natasha Ginwala, Gal Kirn, and Niloufar Tajeri Columbia Books on Architecture and the City MAIN REVIEWS CONTENTS EXCERPT LINKS AWARDS Riots are extraordinary events that have been recurring with increasing frequency and that occupy a highly controversial space in the political imagination. Despite their often negative portrayals, it is undeniable that riots have played a pivotal role in the confrontation between authority and dissent. Recently, with the deepening crises of capitalism, racial violence, and communal tension, an “age of riots” has powerfully begun. As master fictions of the sovereign nation-state implode and the hegemonic silencing of the dispossessed reveals the cracks in governability, Nights of the Dispossessed brings together artistic works, political texts, critical urban analyses, and research projects from across the world in an endeavor to “sense,” chronicle, and think through recent riots and uprisings—evoking a phenomenology of the multitude and surplus population.
