From Trajectory Modeling to Social Habits and Behaviors Analysis
Donatella Gubiani, Marco Pavan, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: In recent years, the widespread of mobile devices has made easier and popular the activities of recording locations visited by users and of inferring their trajectories. The availability of such large amount of spatio-temporal data opens new challenges to automatically extract information and get valuable knowledge. The many aspects of this issue have aroused the interest of researchers in several areas, such as information retrieval, data mining, context-aware computing, security and privacy issues, urban planning, and transport management. Recently, there has been a strong interest in understanding how people move during their common daily activities in order to get information about their behaviors and habits. In this paper we describe considerable recent research works related to the analysis of mobile spatio-temporal data, focusing on the study of social habits and behaviors. We provide a general perspective on studies on human mobility by depicting and comparing methods and algorithms, highlighting some critical issues related to information extraction from spatio-temporal data, and future research directions.

Outlier based literature exploration for cross-domain linking of Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
Tanja Urbančič, Nada Lavrač, Bojan Cestnik, Elsa Fabbretti, Donatella Gubiani, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In knowledge discovery, experts frequently need to combine knowledge from different domains to get new insights and derive new conclusions. Intelligent systems should support the experts in the search for relationships between concepts from different domains, where huge amounts of possible combinations require the systems to be efficient but also sufficiently general, open and interactive to enable the experts to creatively guide the discovery process. The paper proposes a cross-domain literature mining methodology that achieves this functionality by combining the functionality of two complementary text mining tools: clustering and topic ontology creation tool OntoGen and cross-domain bridging terms exploration tool CrossBee. Focusing on outlier documents identified by OntoGen contributes to the efficiency, while CrossBee allows for flexible and user-friendly bridging concepts exploration and identification. The proposed approach, which is domain independent and can support cross-domain knowledge discovery in any field of science, is illustrated on a biomedical case study dealing with Alzheimer’s dis- ease, one of the most threatening age-related diseases, deteriorating lives of numerous individuals and challenging the ageing society as a whole. By applying the proposed methodology to Alzheimer’s disease and gut microbiota PubMed articles, we have identified Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) as a potentially valuable link between these two domains. The results support the hypothesis of neuroinflammatory nature of Alzheimer’s disease, and is indicative for the quest for identifying strategies to control nitric oxide- associated pathways in the periphery and in the brain. By addressing common mediators of inflammation using literature-based discovery, we have succeeded to uncover previously unidentified molecular links between Alzheimer’s disease and gut microbiota with a multi-target therapeutic potential.

Dealing with network changes in cellular fingerprint positioning systems
Chris Marshall, Federico Pittino, Andrea Dalla Torre, Donatella Gubiani, Angelo Montanari, Paolo Gallo, Andrea Viel, 2017, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: Besides being a fundamental infrastructure for communication, cellular networks are exploited for positioning through signal fingerprinting. Maintaining the fingerprint database consistent and up-to-date is a challenging task in many fingerprint positioning systems, e.g., in those populated by a crowd-sourcing effort. To this end, detecting and tracking the changes in the configurations of cellular networks over time is recognized as a relevant problem. In this paper, we show that to cope with this problem we can successfully exploit information provided by Timing Advance (TA). As a by-product, we prove that TA can improve the fingerprint candidate selection phase, reducing the number of fingerprints to provide as input to positioning algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed improvements has been tested on a fingerprint positioning system with a large fingerprint dataset collected over a period of 2 years.
