Distributed agreement in participial sandwiched configurations

Opis: In recent years, several proposals have appeared that try to model the patterns of agreement with coordinate noun phrases found in South Slavic Languages. We investigate agreement in so-called sandwiched configurations, whereby a coordinated noun phrase sits between two agreeing participles. In such cases, the two participles do not necessarily agree with each other, given a scenario in which the first and the second conjunct have different phi-features. This means the two participles choose their target of agreement independently. We argue the results of our experimental study favor an approach to agreement that places it partially in PF.

Do children use language structure to discover the recursive rules of counting?

Opis: We test the hypothesis that children acquire knowledge of the successor function — a foundational principle stating that every natural number n has a successor n + 1 — by learning the productive linguistic rules that govern verbal counting. Previous studies report that speakers of languages with less complex count list morphology have greater counting and mathematical knowledge at earlier ages in comparison to speakers of more complex languages (e.g., Miller & Stigler, 1987). Here, we tested whether differences in count list transparency affected children’s acquisition of the successor function in three languages with relatively transparent count lists (Cantonese, Slovenian, and English) and two languages with relatively opaque count lists (Hindi and Gujarati). We measured 3.5- to 6.5-year-old children’s mastery of their count list’s recursive structure with two tasks assessing productive counting, which we then related to a measure of successor function knowledge. While the more opaque languages were associated with lower counting proficiency and successor function task performance in comparison to the more transparent languages, a unique within-language analytic approach revealed a robust relationship between measures of productive counting and successor knowledge in almost every language. We conclude that learning productive rules of counting is a critical step in acquiring knowledge of recursive successor function across languages, and that the timeline for this learning varies as a function of count list transparency.

Looking for Cognitive Foundations of Functional Sequences

Opis: With the multiplication of various functional projections, syntactic structures became very complex entities. Approaches like Cartography (e.g. Cinque and Rizzi 2008) went one step further than most other approaches, proposing that each sentence comprises of a number of universal, strictly ordered functional projections. In the noun phrase, the strictly ordered functional projections are said to be responsible not only for the relative order of numerals, demonstratives and nouns (cf. Cinque 2005), but also for the universal order of various types of adjectives (cf. Hetzron 1978; Sproat and Shih 1991; Cinque 1994; Scott 2002, etc.). Cinque and Rizzi (2008) discuss possible origins of the many hierarchies of functional projections and suggest that they might derive from general cognition. If cognition and its restrictions are behind the hierarchy of functional projections, then the order of projections hosting adjectives should be reflected in various non-linguistic cognitive processes. We designed several experiments to test this hypothesis. Our experiments did not confirm our hypothesis; but as we have also identified problems in the design of our experiments, our results do not warrant a clear rejection of the hypothesis either.

On the nature of prenumeral adjectives

Opis: Following Greenberg’s generalization 20 prenominal adjectives follow numerals. In this paper we discuss a group of adjectives that appear in unexpected positions: adjectives preceding numerals prenominally. We argue that these adjectives violate cross-linguistic generalizations only apparently, as the noun phrases with such adjectives actually contain additional covert structure – structure that is not realized phonologically/phonetically.

Tvorbeno jezikoslovje o slovenščini

Opis: Tvorbeno jezikoslovje je nastalo v petdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja in se hitro razširilo po Severni Ameriki in drugod po svetu. Spodbudilo je tudi nastanek številnih variacij osnovne ideje ter tudi tako pripomoglo k prepoznavnosti splošnega jezikoslovja. V Sloveniji je bilo tvorbeno jezikoslovje dolgo časa obrobno, četudi smo imeli s tvorbenim jezikoslovje stik že vsaj od šestdesetih let. V zadnjih letih je število tvorbenih objav o slovenščini skokovito naraslo, zaradi česar se zdi primerno narediti pregled nekaj najodmevnejših objav, ki vključujejo slovenske podatke.

Potujoča jezikovna svetovalnica Fakultete za humanistiko (Nova Gorica)

Opis: Potujoča jezikovna svetovalnica Fakultete za humanistiko je bila izvedena v okviru Tedna Univerze v Novi Gorici. Prvi del svetovalnice je bil izveden v sredo, 16. oktobra 2019, od 14.30 do 16.00 na Klubu goriških študentov v Novi Gorici (Trg Edvarda Kardelja 1, Nova Gorica). V dogodku, namenjenem predvsem dijakom, smo obiskovalcem odgovorili na vprašanja o jeziku in jim predstavili orodja, s katerimi si bodo v prihodnje pri podobnih vprašanjih lahko pomagali tudi sami. Svoja vprašanja so lahko obiskovalci posredovali tudi vnaprej, največ vprašanj pa je bilo namenjenih prevzemanju in pregibanju lastnih zemljepisnih imen.

Vrstni red usvajanja konceptov pri predšolskih otrocih

Opis: Po kartografskih raziskavah sodeč je hierarhija funkcijskih projekcij za vse naravne človeške jezike enaka (Cinque in Rizzi, 2010). Ob tem se pojavlja vprašanje, ali ima ta univerzalna hierarhija temelje v splošni kogniciji (Marušič in Mišmaš, 2018, Mišmaš, Popović in Žaucer, 2018). Če povezava med tem kartografskim modelom in splošnimi kognitivnimi sposobnostmi obstaja, lahko sklepamo na povezavo med vrstnim redom funkcijskih projekcij, ki gostijo določeno vrsto pridevnika, in vrstnim redom otrokovega usvajanja konceptov, ki jih pridevniki določene vrste izražajo. Ker otrok skladenjsko zgradbo usvaja od najnižje projekcije k najvišji (Radford, 1996), lahko sklepamo, da bodo otroci najprej usvojili koncept, ki je v hierarhiji postavljen nižje, kot tistega, ki je postavljen višje. V tem diplomskem delu to povezavo iščemo s preverjanjem usvajanja konceptov velikosti, barve in oblike pri predšolskih otrocih. V diplomskem delu sta predstavljena univerzalna hierarhija pridevnikov v samostalniški zvezi in usvajanje jezika pri predšolskih otrocih, v drugem delu pa še rezultati, ki smo jih pridobili s testiranjem otrok. Na podlagi pridobljenih rezultatov lahko vsaj delno potrdimo, da otroci najprej usvojijo koncept barve, nato oblike in nazadnje velikosti, vendar bi za trdnejše zaključke morali testirati več otrok.

Elided Clausal Conjunction Is Not the Only Source of Closest‐Conjunct Agreement: A Picture‐Matching Study

Opis: A recurring hypothesis about the agreement phenomena generalized as closest‐conjunct agreement takes this pattern to result from reduced clausal conjunction, simply displaying the agreement of the verb with the nonconjoined subject of the clause whose content survives ellipsis (Aoun, Benmamoun & Sportiche 1994, 1999; see also Wilder 1997). Closest‐conjunct agreement is the dominant agreement pattern in the South Slavic languages Slovenian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. A natural question is whether closest‐conjunct agreement in these varieties may indeed be analyzed as entirely derived from conjunction reduction. In this article, we report on two experiments conducted to test this. The results reject the hypothesis as far as these languages are concerned, thereby upholding the relevance of models developed to account for closest‐conjunct agreement within theories of agreement.
