Role of transport band edge variation on delocalized charge transport in high-mobility crystalline organic semiconductors
Gvido Bratina, Andrey Kadashchuk, Egon Pavlica, Fei Tong, 2017, original scientific article

Abstract: We demonstrate that the degree of charge delocalization has a strong impact on polarization energy and thereby on the position of the transport band edge in organic semiconductors. This gives rise to long-range potential fluctuations, which govern the electronic transport through delocalized states in organic crystalline layers. This concept is employed to formulate an analytic model that explains a negative field dependence coupled with a positive temperature dependence of the charge mobility observed by a lateral time-of-flight technique in a high-mobility crystalline organic layer. This has important implications for the further understanding of the charge transport via delocalized states in organic semiconductors.

FROM SPINODAL DECOMPOSITION AND MOLECULAR DISPERSION OF POLYSILANES TO SUPER-HARD NANOCOATING
Artem Badasyan, Boštjan Mavrič, Matjaž Valant, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: Conformations of polymer molecules in solution crucially depend on the sign of the effective potential energy of interaction between the monomers, also known as the quality of solvent. Therefore in “poor” solvent regime, when effective attraction overwhelms, the experimental measurements of polymer sizes are complicated by the agglomeration of macromolecules, followed by precipitation. This phenomenon, also known as spinodal decomposition, causes serious problems when the goal is to determine properties of individual macromolecules. Interestingly, while in the case of carbon-based polymers the precipitation-related problems can be easily avoided with dilution, this is not the case for polysilanes, i.e. polymeric chains on basis of silicon. Although the linear polysilanes were first synthesized in early 1920’s, the aggregationrelated problems have hampered their studies and applicability until recently. In the Materials Research Laboratory of University of Nova Gorica we have developed a technology to strengthen the scratch-resistance nanocoating for glass on the basis of polysilane dendritic polymers we synthesized. Through the prism of the Flory-Huggins theory, that provides a miscibility phase diagram in temperature-volume fraction variables, the quality of polymer solution can be manipulated by changing the temperature. Using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) we have managed to show, that at temperatures in the range of 40- 50 C the deagglomeration of the dendritic polysilane takes place in tetrahydrofuran (THF) [1], and the system becomes a true molecular dispersion with particles 20 nm in size [2]. Introducing such molecular dispersion into the alumina precursor solution yields an amorphous nanocomposite stabilized by a high level of strain. This resulted in an extraordinary increase of hardness and scratch resistance of the alumina – polymer nanocomposite coating that can be used for glass protection [3].

Cortisol claws concentrations in dogs from birth to 60 days of age
Jasmine Fusi, Tanja Peric, Barbara Bolis, Alessandro Rota, Antonella Comin, Maria Cristina Veronesi, 2017, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: During the last fetal stage of development and in the neonatal period, the hypothalamic- pituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis secretes cortisol (C), responsible for several physiologic processes. The claws were recently proved to be a useful, non- invasive matrix for long time- frame retrospective C levels analysis also in puppies (Veronesi et al. 2015, Theriogenology 84:791–796). Because of the scarce knowledge on canine perinatology, this study was aimed to assess the C concentrations in claws of newborn puppies collected at birth, 30 and 60 days of age, and to evaluate the possible influence of age, gender and type of birth on C claws accumulation. The study was performed on 58 large purebred, normal, healthy puppies, born by spontaneous or cesarean parturition. The mean C claws concentrations significantly decrease from birth (26 ± 16.39 pg/mg) to 30 (10 ± 4.53 pg/mg) and 60 (6 ± 3.12 pg/mg) days of age (p < 0.0001); a decrease was also seen from 30 to 60 days of age (p < 0.05). No influence of newborn gender and type of birth was found. This trend of decrease is in agreement with data reported by (Veronesi et al. 2015, Theriogenology 84:791–796) in dead puppies, and suggests the important role of C around the time of birth. However the exact source of the C accumulated in claws of puppies at birth must be clarified, while the source of C accumulated at 30, and even more at 60 days, can be supposed to be addressed to the newborn itself.

Combined effects of early season leaf removal and climatic conditions on aroma precursors in ‘Sauvignon blanc’ grapes

Abstract: Early leaf removal around the cluster zone is a common technique applied in cool climate viticulture, to regulate yield components and improve fruit quality. Despite the increasing amount of information on early leaf removal and its impact on total soluble solids, anthocyanins and polyphenols, less is known regarding aroma compounds. In order to verify the hypothesis that defoliation, applied before or after flowering, could impact the biosynthesis of thiol precursors, we performed a two year (2013 and 2014) experiment on Sauvignon blanc. We provided evidence that differential accumulation of thiols precursors in berries is affected by the timing of defoliation and this impact was related to modifications in biosynthetic pathway. Furthermore, the possible interaction between leaf removal treatment and seasonal weather conditions, and its effect on the biosynthesis of volatile precursors are discussed. Our results suggested that in Sauvignon blanc the relative proportion of 4-S-glutathionyl-4-methylpentan-2-one (G-4MSP) and 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol (G-3SH) precursors can be affected by defoliation, and this could be related to the induction of two specific genes encoding glutathione-S-transferases (VvGST3 and VvGST5), while no significant effects on basic fruit chemical parameters, polyphenols and methoxypyrazines were ascertained under our experimental conditions.
