Searching for supernovae in the multiply-imaged galaxies behind the gravitational telescope A370

Opis: Aims. Strong lensing by massive galaxy clusters can provide magnification of the flux and even multiple images of the galaxies that lie behind them. This phenomenon facilitates observations of high-redshift supernovae (SNe) that would otherwise remain undetected. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) detections are of particular interest because of their standard brightness, since they can be used to improve either cluster lensing models or cosmological parameter measurements. Methods. We present a ground-based, near-infrared search for lensed SNe behind the galaxy cluster Abell 370. Our survey was based on 15 epochs of J-band observations with the HAWK-I instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry to infer the global properties of the multiply-imaged galaxies. Using a recently published lensing model of Abell 370, we also present the predicted magnifications and time delays between the images. Results. In our survey, we did not discover any live SNe from the 13 lensed galaxies with 47 multiple images behind Abell 370. This is consistent with the expectation of 0.09 ± 0.02 SNe calculated based on the measured star formation rate. We compare the expectations of discovering strongly lensed SNe in our survey and that performed with HST during the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) programme. We also show the expectations of search campaigns that can be conducted with future facilities, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) or the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). We show that the NIRCam instrument aboard the JWST will be sensitive to most SN multiple images in the strongly lensed galaxies and thus will be able to measure their time delays if observations are scheduled accordingly.

Nationaal Socialistisch Taalbeleid in Nederland voor en Tijdens de Bezetting 1940 - 1945

Opis: Het centrale doel van dit onderzoek is de maatregelen op het gebied van de taalpolitiek, die de overheid tijdens de Duitse bezetting heeft genomen, in kaart te brengen. Aangezien de kiemen van een nieuw, bewust gepland taalgebruik al vanaf 1931 in de NSB-kringen te bespeuren zijn, wordt er ook aan de “interne” nationaal-socialistische taalpolitiek voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog aandacht besteed. Klaarblijkelijk moet men er rekening mee houden dat de ingrepen op de taal in beide fasen een verschillende status hadden. Toch hebben we hier ervoor gekozen de feiten uit de periode voor en tijdens de bezetting samen te presenteren en het nationaal-socialistische taalbeleid in Nederland als één verschijnsel te bekijken, aangezien de procédés, de doeleinden maar ook de ijveraars van het nationaal-socialistische taalbeleid na de intocht van het Duitse leger vrijwel dezelfde bleven. Er lijken twee aspecten te zijn waar men zou kunnen bepleiten dat het om twee wezenlijk verschillende perioden gaat – de doelgroep en de “doordringendheid” van de standaardisatie. Het lijkt toch moeilijk bewijsbaar dat een invloed op de taalgemeenschap als geheel na de intocht als een hoofddoeleinde van de nationaal-socialisten gold (terwijl het vóór de intocht niet het geval was). Wel zijn er aanwijzingen dat sommige aspecten van de standaardisatie tijdens de bezetting juist elitistisch waren (bv. het jargon van de Germaanse SS). Ook de “doordringendheid” van de nationaal-socialistische taalpolitiek lijkt tijdens de bezetting niet groter te zijn geworden. Aangezien de nationaal-socialistische ingrepen op dit gebied niet bepaald opvallend waren en er onder de bevolking geen bereidheid was om deze ingrepen te accepteren/implementeren, is het moeilijk aan te tonen dat de Nederlandse taalgemeenschap zich van deze taalpolitiek bewust was en, als dat wel het geval was, dat ze na mei 1940 meer bekend en invloedrijk was. Dat het om een gerechtvaardigde aanpak gaat, laat ook de enige beschikbare studie over het taalgebruik van de Nederlandse nationaal-socialisten - Toorn, 1991 – zien. Toorn maakt duidelijk dat de nieuwe omstandigheden weinig aan het taalgebruik, maar ook de perceptie van de taal, veranderden. Doorgaans staat de invloed op de Nederlandse taalgemeenschap centraal terwijl het beleid i.v.m. de Duitse taalgemeenschap in Nederland buiten beschouwing is gelaten. Wel komt Duits als tweede taal aan de orde.

Simple and fast HPLC-DAD method for determination of HCDC activity and formation of vinylphenol in Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeast

Opis: Conventionally, alcoholic fermentation in the production of wine is performed by yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. There are numerous starters available, however due to the growing demand for wines with specific characteristics, other Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces species are being investigated for potential use as starters. [1]. Yeast selection has involved the development of techniques for detecting strains that might improve wines in terms of aroma, structure, colour and other technological properties [2]. Colour of the wine can be affected as some metabolites produced by yeast during fermentation may react with grape anthocyanins to produce highly stable pyranoanthocyanins. For the facilitation of formation of vinylphenolic pyranoanthocyanins, yeast strains with high hydroxycinnamate decarboxylase activity are used (HCDC). The mechanism of reaction is decarboxylation of hydroxycinnamic acids and formation of vinylphenols that condense with grape anthocyanins and form stabile vinyphenolic pyranoanthocyanin adducts [3]. It has been demonstrated that some non-Saccharomyces strains (Pichia guillermondii, Schizosaccharomyces pombe) have positive HCDC activity and they can produce vinylphenolic pyranoanthocyanins in higher concentrations than S. cerevisiae. A simple way of determining whether the yeast strain has HCDC activity or not, is the use of fermentation media with the addition of hydroxycinnamic acids, such as p-coumaric acid. The degradation of p-coumaric acid and transformation into 4-vinylphenol (and possibly in 4-ethylphenol) can be checked by LC-DAD. Most of the published data has been done on smaller number of strains. The goal of our work was to develop simple method for the screening of Slovenian in-house yeast collection, comprising of native isolates that mostly originated from Vipava valley and Karst region, and therefore try to determine strains with high HCDC activity. These strains can be used for wine fermentations in order to produce more stable pyranoanthocyanins; which is especially important in wines that has less anthocyanin concentration already from the grape, such as Pinot Noir. 103 different yeast strains belonging to 28 species were selected for the assessment of HCDC activity. In some cases the difference in p-coumaric acid metabolism rate between two strains exceeded 90%. All tested S. paradoxus strains showed higher than 40% degradation rate of p-coumaric acid. HCDC activity of S. cerevisiae strains which is the species most commonly used in fermentation, varied between 5.1 and 66.1%. The commercial strains tested, FPC and EC118 showed 43.9 and 21.5% conversion rate, respectively. It was observed that some native strains had higher HCDC activity than commercial tested ones. Three strains produced vinylphenol in concentration higher than 50 ppm, two of them being P. guillermondii and another strain being S. paradoxus (Sut85). In general strain with high HCDC activity also produced high concentration of 4-vinylphenol. The results showed that HCDC activity is highly strain dependent, which correlates with the literature data available. The proposed method is very simple and does not require special sample preparation prior to HPLC analysis. Furthermore, the proposed fermentations in deep-well microtiter plates allow the screening of high number of strains. The method could be used for routine screening, to determine which strain has high HCDC activity and produces high concentration of vinylphenols and can therefore be used in future for determination of strains ability to synthesize vinylphenolic pyranoanthocyanins.
