Marica Nadlišek Bartol and her editorial network around the first Slovenian women's newspaper Slovenka
Katja Mihurko Poniž, Narvika Bovcon, 2019, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: This paper aims to present the editorial practice of Marica Nadlišek Bartol, who edited the first Slovenian women's newspaper Slovenka (1897-1902) in the first three years of it's publishing. Nadlišek Bartol saw in the publishing of women's writings the main accomplishment of her editorship. She encouraged Sloveanian women to take up the pen and write down their feelings and reflections. Since Slovenian women writers entered the literary field not earlier than in 1848 there had been almost no role models in the national literary tradition. Nadlišek knew how to approach this problem: she had published the translations from and about foreign women writers and prompted the dialog between Slovenian women writers and their foreign counterparts. The paper examines which women writers were presented in the newspaper Slovenka and in which ways, how the articles about them caused the discussions on different topics concerning women's emancipations on the pages of the newspaper and in the public life, and how the fact that Slovenka was published on the national fringes in the multiethnical space of Trieste influenced Nadlišek's editorial practice. By using the data from the Virtual Research Enviroment Women Writers this paper also explores the possibilites of visual representation of Nadlišek's editorial network.

Theory of Discourse and Semiotics : Foucault, Bakhtin, Peirce
Aleš Vaupotič, 2019, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The paper begins with an analysis of a news article reporting on scientific discovery. The scientific methods are considered from the point of view of Peircean semiotics and the structuralist semiology. The usefulness of the Peircean approach in literary scholarship is demonstrated in the case of the realist novel as it is construed by Hans Vilmar Geppert. By considering Geppert’s alignment of Bakhtin’s theory of the novel with Peirce’s sign-theory the similarities and differences between the discourse-theoretical (considering also Foucault’s work) and semiotic approaches is outlined. In the second part of the text two cases of artistic research are presented, the first one, the Friedhof Laguna project from 2003, being realised in the discourse-theoretical frameworks, and the second one, 3-D visualizations of the NEWW Women Writers database from 2017, being grounded in the Peircean semiotics.

REVITALISATION OF RUINS AND THE IMPACT ON CONSERVATION POLICIES IN SLOVENIA. CASE STUDY OF THE CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY AT ŽIČE, SLOVENIA
Mateja Golež, 2019, doctoral dissertation

Abstract: The doctoral dissertation in question presents in detail the issue of protecting architectural heritage as ruins on the example of the Žiče Charterhouse complex in Slovenia. The author based her work on the history of conservation, internationally applicable charters related to architectural heritage protection and on examples taken from international conservation practice. Although the Slovenian conservation profession, as an independent technical and scientific discipline, received its formal legal status through the emergence of independent Slovenia merely a couple of decades ago, it is possible to claim that Slovenia, with its first academically qualified conservation specialists Avguštin Stegenšek and France Stele, was in contact with active policy on heritage protection as early as before World War I, when the Slovenian territory was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and also after the War, when the territory was annexed to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Despite long-standing efforts, Slovenians did not achieve the legal protection of architectural heritage until early 1980s, when an independent act on the protection of natural and cultural heritage was adopted in former Yugoslavia. Because of this, the tasks carried out by conservation specialists until that time primarily focused on documenting heritage and carrying out the most pressing maintenance works. Since all major international charters related to cultural heritage protection were signed when Slovenia was part of former Yugoslavia and after it became independent, it is not possible to claim that the profession did not follow the international legal order in this field. This is why it is sometimes difficult to understand the large gap between international technical criteria and the conservation decisions made by Slovenian conservation experts when performing intervention works on structures or sites of cultural value in Slovenia. To improve this condition, it is therefore vital that buildings be treated comprehensively prior to interventions, including in terms of carrying out natural science and technical research studies that provide an insight into the materials, structural frame and building physics of a building, as shown in the doctoral dissertation on the example of the ruin of the Church of St. John the Baptist at Žiče Charterhouse. Only by carefully analysing historic materials, it is possible to make the right decision on the use of adequate substitute materials for the needs of maintaining a ruin and, only on the basis of preliminary research made into structural frames, it will be possible to monitor the vitality of ruins in future, whereby using state-of-the-art research methods from conservation science. Since the Church of St. John the Baptist has lost its original intended use and also the possibility to get it back, the author of the dissertation proposes that the structure not be reconstructed, since this would imply a major deviation from original architecture, with a shortage of adequate documentation that would provide a basis for credible reconstruction. For this reason, the author of the doctoral dissertation defends the position that the Church be protected as a ruin. The operator of the monastery complex and the entire valley of St. John, where the remains of the lower and upper monastic houses of the Žiče Charterhouse are located, now faces quite a challenging task. It will have to prepare a management plan that will foresee expert bases for sustainable use of natural and cultural values of this site and a suitable development policy, whereby giving the key role to the local community.

W OMEN W RITERS D ATABASE AND VIRTUAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT BEYOND THE CURRICULA OF LITERARY SCHOLARSHIP
Aleš Vaupotič, Narvika Bovcon, 2017, published scientific conference contribution abstract

Abstract: The study of informatics typically includes information visualization and the rhetoric of user interface. Such courses are expanding the core computer science curricula towards multimedia communication design. However, to practice visualization on datasets in a non-focused way may diminish the quality of educational effect as well as the quality of the results of students' projects. A collaboration with domain experts has proven to be very beneficial by involving students in various research projects and platforms. The students of informatics at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, have touched upon humanities projects in different special domains: the datasets provided by Institute of Contemporary History (INZ, Ljubljana), interface design for electronic scholarly editions based on TEI XML files, documentation of new media art exhibitions, and others. As noted by some contributors in A New Companion to Digital Humanities (2016) with relevance to the latter aspect of interdisciplinary contact, the domain of new media art constitutes an essential inspiration for the study of digital humanities methods and approaches. In the second part of the paper, the multi-year collaboration between the University of Nova Gorica and University of Ljubljana computer-science curricula will be presented. The WomenWriters database, as well as subsequently the NEWW VRE, has been used in different models of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Brand introduction on the Slovenian market: case study Gurieli tea
Mariam Parekhelashvili, 2016, master's thesis

Abstract: Human beings have always tried to create new, innovative things so as to gain profit out of them. Companies which are following the human beings nature strive to satisfy customers’ demand for high-quality products and services. Developing a new product is always a complex and experimental process. The process of introducing new products to an international market is as risky as it is vital for the long-term success of many companies. The number of new products introduced globally is increasing every year, but great majority of them fail. The main purpose of this thesis is to develop an effective marketing plan for the new product introduction to an international market - a successful launch of the Georgian Gurieli tea to the Slovenian market. Market research gave us a business view of the tea industry on the Slovenian market. By means of secondary research and market analysis, we identified potential customers, understood market conditions and competitive landscape. The main steps of proposed marketing strategy are segmentation, targeting and successful positioning (STP). STP focuses on commercial effectiveness, selecting the most valuable segments of the Slovenian market and developing the marketing mix and product positioning strategy for each recognized segment. Planned implementation of a subtle advertising campaign for the Gurieli tea would be a vital component of the strategy - through an innovative marketing communication mix the product would be successfully introduced and promoted to target customers.

France Prešeren's Poems - from Misunderstanding to Teaching
Zoran Božič, 2013, original scientific article

Abstract: An empirical study of understanding The Baptism at the Savica showed that Slovenian high school students had notable difficulties in decoding the basic meanings of Prešeren’s poem. In literature, didactics offer three methods of facilitating reception of complex classical poetry: linguistic modernisation, addition of notes, and transmission into prose. Due to the cult status of Prešeren’s poetry, modernizations can only be limited, while commenting hinders a spontaneous reading experience; as a result, only prosification entirely solves the problems of pronounced archaization, inverted word order and abundant metaphors in Prešeren’s lines. This was confirmed by an empirical study in which high school students, who read the prosification together with the verses from The Baptism at the Savica, attested a comprehension which was twice as good as comprehension of students who only read the poetry.

Evaluation of France Prešeren's Poems
Zoran Božič, 2014, original scientific article

Abstract: The paper, referring to the school selection of Prešeren's poems, deals with the problem of evaluating Prešeren's poems. When selecting literary texts for secondary school reading books, the modern literature didactics recommend giving priority to the principles of reception and literary history. A study of the evaluation criteria of three leading experts on Prešeren from the second half of the 20th century brings recognition that, in spite of significant differences between them, literary historians, above all, value formally complex and receptively demanding poems belonging to the central period of Prešeren's romanticism. Although the influence of literary-historical principle is also noticed in secondary school students, these attribute the most value to Prešeren's poems with simple forms and less demanding reception, predominantly those that have a story, are easier to understand and provide a complete experience.
