Fractal analysis - a surrogate technique for material characterization
Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu Swapna, Sankararaman S, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Fractal analysis has emerged as a potential analytical tool in almost all branches of science and technology. The paper is the first report of using fractal dimension as a surrogate technique for estimating particle size. A regression equation is set connecting the soot particle size and fractal dimension, after investigating the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic (FESEM) images of carbonaceous soot from five different sources. Since the fractal dimension is an invariant property under the scale transformation, an ordinary photograph of the soot should also yield the same fractal dimension. This enables one to determine the average size of the soot particles, using the regression equation, by calculating the fractal dimension from the photograph. Hence, instead of frequent measurement of average particle size from FESEM, this technique of estimating the particle size from the fractal dimension of the soot photograph, is found to be a potentially cost-effective and non-contact method.

The finite size effects and two-state paradigm of protein folding
Artem Badasyan, Matjaž Valant, Jože Grdadolnik, Vladimir N. Uversky, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The coil to globule transition of the polypeptide chain is the physical phenomenon behind the folding of globular proteins. Globular proteins with a single domain usually consist of about 30 to 100 amino acid residues, and this finite size extends the transition interval of the coil-globule phase transition. Based on the pedantic derivation of the two-state model, we introduce the number of amino acid residues of a polypeptide chain as a parameter in the expressions for two cooperativity measures and reveal their physical significance. We conclude that the k2 measure, defined as the ratio of van ’t Hoff and calorimetric enthalpy is related to the degeneracy of the denatured state and describes the number of cooperative units involved in the transition; additionally, it is found that the widely discussed k2=1 is just the necessary condition to classify the protein as the two-state folder. We also find that Ωc, a quantity not limited from above and growing with system size, is simply proportional to the square of the transition interval. This fact allows us to perform the classical size scaling analysis of the coil-globule phase transition. Moreover, these two measures are shown to describe different characteristics of protein folding

Polymer Nanoparticle Sizes from Dynamic Light Scattering and Size Exclusion Chromatography: The Case Study of Polysilanes.
Artem Badasyan, Andraž Mavrič, Irena Kralj Cigić, Tim Bencik, Matjaž Valant, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) are among the most popular methods for determining polymer sizes in solution. Taking dendritic and network polysilanes as a group of least soluble polymer substances, we critically compare and discuss the difference between nanoparticle sizes, obtained by DLS and SEC. Polymer nanoparticles are typically in poor solution conditions below the theta point and are in globular conformation therefore. Determination of particle sizes in presence of attractive interactions is not a trivial task. The only possibility to measure aggregation-free, a true molecular size of polymer nanoparticles in such regime of solution, is to operate with the dilute solution of globules (below theta point and above the miscibility line). Basing on results of our polysilane measurements, we come to a conclusion that DLS provides more reliable results than SEC for the dilute solution of globules. General implications for the size measurements of polymer nanoparticles in solutions are discussed.
