Progressive pedagogies for innovation among art, science and technology : the case of mastmodule.eu
Peter Purg, N. Castillo-Rutz, Sergi Bermúdez i Badia, C. Csíkszentmihályi, Jurij V. Krpan, F. Hedeer, D. L. Sousa, Klemen Širok, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Even if aiming at technical innovation, an interdisciplinary curriculum can and should include social values. The Master Module in Art, Science and Technology project attempted to do so by developing the innovation catalyst profile, a graduate who critically reflects on the creation process by combining art thinking and design thinking. Within a pilot of the MAST module students from three universities responded to timely challenges such as ‘The Future of Work’ and ‘Solidarity,’ through which the project staff tested progressive pedagogical solutions like cross-disciplinary mentoring and situated knowledge sharing. Introducing European social values in both artistic and technical education, the article presents models, experiments and inspirations discussed against discursive analysis and course evaluation data. In order to support not only inclusive but also sustainable teaching and learning approaches, novel methods and tools may become daringly innovative as well as critical of both their pedagogical and the wider social setting.

Engaging Bodies Through Expanded Art Practice
Asja Apolonia Trost, 2020, magistrsko delo

Opis: The master thesis entitled “Engaging Bodies Through Expanded Art Practice” is divided in two parts: the first one is the theoretical part which places socially engaged arts in the time-line of contemporary art, followed by an overview of my practical work entitled “Obsolete Properties”. The central aim of the theoretical part is to determine the structures of socially engaged art projects, with all their ambiguities, caused by the inherent connection between the social and the artistic. Topics of such process-based interdisciplinary and participatory art projects reflect at the same time on cultural traditions as well as on current social issues. The second part is an analysis of the artwork I created and set in different contexts. It consists of common materials that arrived into my hands after their previous owners moved their homes. The artwork celebrates artistic process and environmental sustainability while on the other side serves as an agent on the discourse of values.

Explicit Feature Construction and Manipulation for Covering Rule Learning Algorithms
Nada Lavrač, Johannes Fuernkranz, Dragan Gamberger, 2010, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Features are the main rule building blocks for rule learning algorithms. They can be simple tests for attribute values or complex logical terms representing available domain knowledge. In contrast to common practice in classification rule learning, we argue that separation of the feature construction and rule construction processes has theoretical and practical justification. Explicit usage of features enables a unifying framework of both propositional and relational rule learning and we present and analyze procedures for feature construction in both types of domains. It is demonstrated that the presented procedure for constructing a set of simple features has the property that the resulting set enables construction of complete and consistent rules whenever it is possible, and that the set does not include obviously irrelevant features. Additionally, the concept of feature relevancy is important for the effectiveness of rule learning. It this work, we illustrate the concept in the coverage space and prove that the relative relevancy has the quality-preserving property in respect to the resulting rules. Moreover, we show that the transformation from the attribute to the feature space enables a novel, theoretically justified way of handling unknown attribute values. The same approach enables that estimated imprecision of continuous attributes can be taken into account, resulting in construction of robust features in respect to this imprecision.

General framework for the conservation of historical rural landscape. Case study of Qadisha Valley in Lebanon.
Bachir Zarif Keyrouz, 2016, doktorska disertacija

Opis: The international community has reacted to the challenges faced by historic cities and cultural landscapes. In 2011, UNESCO adopted the international recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape in order to draw the attention of governments and local communities to the need to improve the management of historic urban areas. The aim of the present dissertation is to expand the UNESCO definition to Historic Rural Landscapes, and to explore how the proposed methodology could be applied to the management of rural areas. The dissertation takes the Qadisha Valley in Lebanon as an example, where some elements have already been recognised for their outstanding universal value. It is considered however that these historic-cultural elements are part of the larger context of the Qadisha Valley, which has its specificity and its qualities that merit being recognised. It is also considered that the management of the elements already recognised by UNESCO can only be successfully safeguarded if the management is understood in the context of the entire valley. Consequently, the thesis is articulated taking into account the following parameters: 1. UNESCO has already set the restoration plan to solve the problems of Qadisha Valley. Based on this plan, the question can be raised whether or not the rural planning in Qadisha is well managed at the present? 2. In case Qadisha Zone is not well conserved, what improvements could be brought about and implemented in order to safeguard the cultural heritage and historical rural landscape, and what should be the guiding policies of restoration? 3. Once a restoration plan is implemented in Qadisha Zone, what management plan should be brought up and implemented to safeguard its cultural heritage and historical rural landscape? 4. How can conservation of cultural heritage in Qadisha Zone be done culturally and in a socially acceptable way? 5. What sectors of the nation are to be involved in the Management plan? How can the MP preserve and restore Qadisha Zone? The aim of the dissertation has been to examine the possibilities of involvement of the local community and relevant authorities in a more structured management of their properties within the context of the entire valley and its exceptional historic and landscape qualities. It is hoped that the study can generate more interest in the management of the rural context within the increasingly globalising society, and draw attention to the qualities of historic rural landscapes as the setting for an improved quality of life.
