Title:Transformation of Ancient Motifs in Slovenian Literature of 19th and 20th Century
Keywords:Ancient mythology for centuries inspired Europe and was transformed and reinterpreted in different ways as well as in various art genres. Ancient motifs echoed in the Slovenian literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Slovenian literature accepted or rejected them in various stages of its development, using them to create its own motifs and thematic design. Special focus of the doctoral dissertation was placed on the types of literary reception which was realized in the Slovenian literature of Romanticism and in the 20th century, in the time when the ancient characters and motifs became symbols and metaphors of modern subjectivity. The brief review of foreign and domestic science on mythology, with an emphasis on theoretical reading of myth in literature, was followed by the observation of the reception of ancient motifs in the Slovenian and European literary space since the classical antiquity. Special attention was dedicated to the motifs of Medea, Orpheus and Odysseus in the selected works of the Slovenian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, as each of the characters with its universality and uniqueness exerted a significant impact on the latter. With the help of intertextual methods authors' intentions behind the choice of particular ancient motifs were analyzed, as well as their role, interpretation and possible transformation or actualization.
