Title:THE ARMENO-BULGARIAN FRIENDSHIP: A MATTER OF MERE RHETORIC?
Abstract:The theme of this article is the friendship between Bulgarians and Armenians and the discourse about it which developed in the arguments produced by the two peoples, rooted in their long history of closeness and coexistence. The proximity is mainly based on three historical facts: the creation of a writing system at the origins of both literary traditions, the contacts of the Bulgarians with Paulicianism, the settlement of Armenian refugees in Bulgaria - a settlement so stable that it became an integral part of Bulgarian national self-representation processes and left traces, among other things, in the Armenci poem by Pejo Javorov. The information used in this work was taken from a research experience conducted among the Armenians of Plovdiv, as well as from the review of the book Bălgari i Armenci zaedno prez vekovete and from the articles in Bulgarian published in the newspapers of the Armenian minority in Plovdiv.
