Enhancing optical biosensing : comparing two physical treatments for GPTES chemical functionalization of cyclo-olefin copolymer foil

Abstract: Cyclo-olefin-copolymer (COC) transparent films are currently the best choice for micro-fluidic bio-sensors for point-of-care diagnostic applications using optical signal detection. However, while the optical and mechanical properties of this polymer are extremely good, the adhesion of the bio-probes on this surface is not optimal, due to its chemical structure, that presents only saturated carbon bonds. The deposition of organo-silane molecules on the COC surface is one of the most effective ways to overcome this problem. But, for the surface functionalization, a surface physical treatment is necessary before the chemical modification of the COC surface. In this paper a comparison of the effectiveness of two different physical treatments, oxygen plasma and UV-ozone, is reported. In particular, the exposure time of the UV-Ozone treatment has been selected to avoid the problem of auto-fluorescence of the modified COC surface, that was observed also for relatively short UV exposure (around 10 minutes). An investigation of the reactive radicals created on the surface after the physical treatments and the following chemical modification with the organo-silane molecule (GPTES) has been performed using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The surface energy and morphology of the films have been also measured by contact angle and optical profilometry. Finally, the bio-probes adhesion performances of the COC surfaces obtained with the two physical treatments and the chemical modification were tested in a fluorescence-based assay, using an organic light emission diode to excite the fluorescence. We observed that the UV-ozone treatment allows to obtain a siloxane network with some reactive epoxy radicals on the COC surface, however, their quantity and distribution are less important and homogeneous than in the oxygen plasma treated surfaces.

Nocturnal boundary layer turbulence regimes analysis during the BLLAST campaign

Abstract: A night-time turbulence regime classification, the so-called “HOckey-Stick Transition ” (HOST) theory, proposed by Sun et al. (2012) from the Cooperative Atmosphere–Surface Exchange Study-1999 (CASES-99) is explored using data from the Boundary-Layer Late Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence (BLLAST) field campaign which took place during summer 2011 in the central French Pyrenean foothills. Results show that the HOST turbulence relationships for the BLLAST field campaign data are strongly dependent on both the meteorological and orographic features. The HOST pattern only appears for nights when a stably stratified boundary layer can be developed, corresponding to fair-weather and clear-sky nights, when the flow is generated by the nearby orography, from the south and the south-east. Those flows strongly influenced by the orography may generate intermittent or enhanced turbulence. When considering the whole nocturnal dataset for these flow directions, several enhanced turbulence points are found to be associated with sudden wind speed and directional shear transitions. In contrast, flows from other directions do not reproduce the HOST relationships and the turbulence relationship is almost linear, independent of vertical temperature gradients, corresponding to flows driven by synoptic scales. In addition we identify examples of gravity waves and top-down turbulent events that lead to transitions between the turbulence regimes.

Implementation of the EPBD in Slovenia – Status in 2020

Abstract: The Concerted Action EPBD (CA EPBD) addresses the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). It aims to contribute to the reduction of energy use in European buildings, through the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the field of energy efficiency and energy savings between all 28 EU Member States plus Norway. The CA EPBD is a joint initiative between the EU Member States and the European Commission. It involves representatives of national ministries or their affiliated institutions who are in charge of preparing the technical, legal and administrative framework for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in each EU Member State, plus Norway. The objective is to enhance the sharing of information and experiences from national adoption and implementation of this important European legislation. The transposition of the EPBD in Slovenia is the overall responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and was primarily transposed by the Energy Act (EZ-1), covering the topics of NZEB, energy performance certification, inspection of heating and AC systems and energy efficiency information programmes. The Act on Energy Efficiency (ZURE) integrates the EZ-1 articles related to the EPBD. The revision of the building codes (PURES) is still in progress and planned for publication in late 2021. It will contain detailed technical requirements for NZEB based on the technical definition given in the national NZEB action plan, and the revision of the calculation methodology according to a new set of CEN EPBD standards. Important recent steps in EPBD implementation are the application of the central national electronic register of EPCs and associated software, the independent control system for EPCs, first steps in the cross-linking of e-registries for EPCs, inspections and public buildings, as well as wide information activities implemented by the Eco Fund concerning financial instruments available for the energy renovation of buildings.

Sledljivost materialov na montažni liniji

Abstract: V zadnjem času v poslovanju je vidno, da se papirnato poslovanje postopoma zamenjuje z elektronskim. To se predvsem opazi v poslovanju med podjetji in tudi pri sledljivosti materiala v izbranem podjetju. Sledljivost se dandanes pospešeno uveljavlja kot orodje za izboljšavo delovnih procesov, pomoč pri odpravljanju napak in dodatna ponudba kupcem. Zagotavljanje ustrezne sledljivost in označevanje sestavnih delov za nemoteno delovanje proizvodne linije, je zahtevno delo, s katero se soočajo vsa podjetja. Prihajajo vedno nove zahteve in pričakovanja odjemalcev oz. kupcev, ki silijo podjetje k stalnemu izboljševanju in investiranju v boljše, zmogljivejše in kakovostnejše proizvodne zmogljivosti. Vse to pa je dobro tudi za samo podjetje, saj tako postane še bolj konkurenčno in vitko. Namen diplomskega dela je predstaviti problem sledenja materiala na proizvodnji liniji v izbranem podjetju. Najprej sem opisal trenutno stanje sledljivosti materialov v izbranem podjetju, in sicer potek sledljivosti od dobave materiala pa vse do porabe v proizvodni liniji. Opisal sem sledljivost na proizvodni liniji in probleme, ki nastajajo med samim procesom. Ugotovil sem, da največ težav nastane pri prenosu materiala v skladišče oz. na mesto oskrbe pri potrjevanju materiala ter med samim procesom pri oskrbovanju linije z materialom. Ob ugotovitvah napak in problemov sem predstavil tudi rešitve, ki bi izboljšale oz. nadgradile samo sledljivost materiala in obenem zagotovile še boljše sledenje ter doslednost.
