Representation of Africa among the Slovenes from 1850 to 1941 : dissertation
Anja Polajnar, 2025, doctoral dissertation

Abstract: This dissertation undertakes a comprehensive exploration of the historical development of the representation of Africa from the mid-nineteenth century to the beginning of the Second World War, with the primary objective of deepening the understanding of external influences that shaped Slovenes' perceptions of foreigners and the portrayal of the “Other.” The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of how Africa was portrayed in major Slovenian print media, within the broader context of activities spanning from 1850 to the beginning of the Second World War. By examining historical relations between Slovenes and Africans, the study aims to shed light on contemporary issues related to intercultural dialogue and the propagation of stereotypes about foreign cultures. The research reveals how dominant representations in Slovenia contributed to the construction of the image of Africa within its historical framework, dividing the research into two distinct eras. The first era, which covers time when the area that is nowadays Slovenia was under the Austrian Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), witnessed the publication of numerous articles in the Slovenian press, including notable outlets such as Zgodnja Danica, Slovenec, Slovenski narod and Domoljub, as well as textbooks for geography and history. The second era (1918–1941), when Slovenia was part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, another missionary publication of the St. Peter Claver Society for African Missions publishing the magazines Odmev iz Afrike and Zamorski otrok (later Zamorček), the daily press Slovenec, Slovenski narod and Domoljub, and geography and history textbooks were analyzed. The focus of the study is to analyze representations in the press and to uncover the formation of the concept of the “Other” and how this “Other” was perceived by Slovenes. Using a critical, chronological, and comparative approach, the research examines the emergence of stereotypes, drawing on insights from disciplines such as social psychology and cultural anthropology. Ultimately, the thesis aims to provide valuable insights into the construction of perceptions, the evolution of stereotypes, and the dynamics of intercultural dialogue in the context of African representation in the Slovenian society.

Abstract: The physics of the non-thermal Universe provides information on the acceleration mechanisms in extreme environments, such as black holes and relativistic jets, neutron stars, supernovae or clusters of galaxies. In the presence of magnetic fields, particles can be accelerated towards relativistic energies. As a consequence, radiation along the entire electromagnetic spectrum can be observed, and extreme environments are also the most likely sources of multi-messenger emission. The most energetic part of the electromagnetic spectrum corresponds to the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray regime, which can be extensively studied with ground based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The results obtained by the current generation of IACTs, such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS, demonstrate the crucial importance of the VHE band in understanding the non-thermal emission of extreme environments in our Universe. In some objects, the energy output in gamma rays can even outshine the rest of the broadband spectrum. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of IACTs, which, with cutting edge technology and a strategic configuration of ~100 telescopes distributed in two observing sites, in the northern and southern hemispheres, will reach better sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, and broader energy coverage than currently operational IACTs. With CTA we can probe the most extreme environments and considerably boost our knowledge of the non-thermal Universe.

// Crypto-Minding: postindustrijski podatkovni aktivizem : PostMobilnost; GO!2025 Evropska prestolnica kulture
Marina Zafiris, Christopher Csikszentmihalyi, exhibition

Abstract: // Stoletje obsedene industrializacije nam je širom zemeljske oble zapustilo obilico poceni energije, zemljišč in infrastrukture.
