1. Polyphenol, antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of six different white and red wine grape processing leftoversPeter Raspor, Sonja Smole Možina, Katja Jug, Melita Sternad Lemut, Branka Mozetič Vodopivec, Anja Klančnik, Kajetan Trošt, 2016, original scientific article Abstract: BACKGROUND
During winemaking, grape polyphenols are only partly extracted, and consequently unexploited. The main aim was to characterise the phenolic content of freeze-dried grape skin and seed (FDSS) extracts obtained from Slovenian and international grape varieties and evaluate their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-adhesive activities.
RESULTS
FDSS of six Vitis vinifera L. grapevine cultivars from Vipava Valley region (Slovenia) underwent extraction and sonification under different conditions. Flavonols were the predominant content of extracts from white ‘Zelen’ and ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ grape varieties, with strong antimicrobial activities against Gram-negative bacteria. ‘Pinot Noir’ FDSS extracted with 50% aqueous ethanol extraction produced a high phenolic content in the final extract, which was further associated with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against all tested bacteria. Bacterial adhesion to stainless steel surfaces with minimal and maximal surface roughness was significantly inhibited (up to 60%) across a wide FDSS concentration range, with lower concentrations also effective with two types of stainless steel surfaces.
CONCLUSION
FDSS extracts from winery by-products show interesting phenolic profiles that include flavonols, catechins, anthocyanins, and hydroxycinnamic acids, with yields influenced by grapevine cultivar and extraction conditions. The antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-adhesive activities of 50% aqueous ethanol ‘Pinot Noir’ FDSS extract reveals potential applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries for these bioactive residues. 2. Post Colonial DilettantesRajat Sharma, 2018, master's thesis Abstract: The thesis begins a discourse into a need of an Indian film theory by exploring and
analysing the plenitude of relevant western theories. In order to do so it lays down certain
concrete relationships between ideologies, terminologies and their effect; as in what
exactly post colonial means, why it is important to understand the impact of colonisation
on culture and thus on one of the most mass consumed medium in India; films. The thesis
explores the depths and complexity of the relationship of these two and the other
influences that sprout from it for example the intensity of colonisation as a cultural project
and its influence on the social reality of the people, artists, thinkers (and in our case
specifically filmmakers) , who in turn reflect on this culture through various mediums
including films. The thesis examines the western plethora of film theory in order to
accentuate the contrast between film and cinema in the west and east and thus the
subsequent need to bring forth a new ‘Eastern Film theory’. 3. Neutrosophic Permeable Values and Energetic Subsets with Applications in BCK/BCI-AlgebrasHashem Bordbar, Young Bae Jun, Florentin Smarandache, Seok Zun Song, 2018, original scientific article Abstract: The concept of a (∈, ∈)-neutrosophic ideal is introduced, and its characterizations are established. The notions of neutrosophic permeable values are introduced, and related properties are investigated. Conditions for the neutrosophic level sets to be energetic, right stable, and right vanished are discussed. Relations between neutrosophic permeable S- and I-values are considered. 7. Novel composite films from regenerated cellulose-glycerol-polyvinyl alcohol: Mechanical and barrier propertiesManuel Vazquez, Gonzalo Velazquez, Patricia Cazón, 2019, original scientific article Abstract: Cellulose is considered as an alternative for the demand of biocompatible and environmentally friendly food packaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate a composite film from regenerated cellulose combined with polyvinyl alcohol. Glycerol was used as a plasticizer. Mathematical models were used to describe the effect of the film structure on the mechanical (tensile strength, percentage of elongation at break) and barrier properties (water vapour permeability, light-barrier properties and transparency). The morphology, structural and thermal properties were evaluated by spectral analysis (FT-IR and UV-VIS-NIR), scanning electron microscopy and dif- ferential scanning calorimetry. Models predict cellulose-glycerol-polyvinyl alcohol films with tensile strength values from 25.9 to 369 MPa, similar to that of synthetic polymer films. The elongation at break of the developed films (0.89–18.7%) was lower than that of synthetic polymer films. The water vapour permeability obtained (2.32·10−11 - 3.01·10−11 g/s·m·Pa) was higher than that of petrochemical-based plastics. Cellulose films re- inforced with polyvinyl alcohol showed a smooth surface. Results showed that it is viable to accomplish com- posite films from cellulose-polyvinyl alcohol-glycerol with enhanced mechanical properties. The obtained films showed top values of transparency. The addition of glycerol resulted in films with a UV protective effect which could be important in food packaging to prevent lipid oxidative deterioration. 8. Treatment strategies targeting persister cell formation in bacterial pathogensFazlurrahman Khan, Dung Pham, Nazia Tabassum, Sandra Oloketuyi, Young-Mog Kim, 2020, review article Abstract: Persister cells are transiently antibiotic-tolerant and dormant subpopulations that are produced to escape the effects of antibiotics within biofilms or planktonic cell populations. Persister cells are of high clinical importance due to their tolerance to antimicrobial agents and subsequent failure in antibiotic treatments. Understanding persister cell formation mechanisms is therefore highly important for developing effective therapeutic strategies against pathogenic bacterial persisters. Several anti-persister compounds have been previously identified via isolation from natural resources or chemical synthesis. Furthermore, a combination of these compounds with antibiotics or non-antibiotic drugs also allows action on multiple targets while reducing the administration frequency. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the clinical importance and formation mechanisms of persister cells as well as the current treatment strategies against persister cell formations in chronic infections. 9. Ezikov transfer v oblastta na pragmatikataPenka Stateva, 2021, invited lecture at foreign university Abstract: n this talk I will present work in progress that aims to explore a previously uncharted area of multilingual language acquisition, which concerns negative linguistic transfer in the domain of pragmatics. The research is part of a larger program in experimental pragmatics which aims to identify points of cross-linguistic diversion that affect meaning. We investigate the impact of language variation on bilingual acquisition of grammatical number in pairs of languages like Lebanese Arabic and French, and Slovenian-Italian, in which the interpretation of plural morphology within each pair is different depending on whether the number paradigm also includes dual number or not.
