Winning wars with films : (storytelling for artistic activism)
Sagar Gahatraj, 2021, master's thesis

Abstract: This study mainly examines the prospect of utilizing the power of cinema to resolve humans’ conflicts. The research begins by analysing the psychology of human brain; how human brain functions, how belief systems are created, and most importantly, what is the cause of human disputes. The thesis then investigates the possibilities and pattern of psychological change. After uncovering how psychological change works, the research paper dives into comparing human psychology with the psychology of storytelling. The findings from this comparison are used to determine if storytelling can induce psychological change. At this point, the study is confronted by historical evidences, where the power of storytelling was exploited to control and manipulate people. However, upon further investigation on this issue, the duel power of storytelling is discovered, which suggest that story can be both propaganda and cure for propaganda. With these findings in hand, the research continues on its main pursuit; finding out if films can resolve conflicts. To do so, the thesis presents the history of film-making and its association with storytelling from its beginning. The research also looks into the power of film-making, and question if the power of film-making can be combined with the power of storytelling for artistic activism. The first part of thesis concludes by summarizing the findings of the study. The second part of the thesis analyses a short film, In The Nation Of Car Lovers, which was a practical part of the Master’s thesis. Finally, the thesis concludes by comparing the findings of the theoretical part to its utilization in the practical part of the thesis.

Charge transport characterization of P3HT thin-film organic semiconductor : Written report: in fulfilment of diploma seminar 1FAF29 requirement
Matija Filipčič, 2021, research project (high school)

Abstract: The focus of this diploma seminar is to describe different types of charge transport theory and models used for finding mobility in semiconductors, more specifically focused on P3HT thin-film organic semiconductor. It also describes the time-of-flight method, which was used to measure the experimental data for P3HT with time dependent current I(t) curve. Another data set was obtained by performing Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations using Miller-Abrahams hopping formalism. KMC was used to determine the material disorder, simulate I(t) curve and transit time for every charge carrier. Simulated data, different transit times and mobilities were then finally compared with experimental, in order to find agreements between the two.

Mourning process of family bereavement in Italian cinema : theory and practice behind the making of "EDEN" diploma film
Elisabetta Gessi, 2021, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: This work is a study of the mourning process of family bereavement during the development of Italian cinema. The theoretical and practical part are extremely interconnected: starting from emblematic Italian films regarding death, this study further develops on pointing out how Italian authors put the mourning process into image. Moreover, three Italian films of the last decade are taken into account in the analysis: we underline the main characteristics and recurring themes of these aforementioned films. This thesis considers the theory and practice behind the making of EDEN, Diploma Film. In the last chapters we underline the whole process behind this short film, including the storyline, the meaning behind it, pre-production, production, and post production.

Hiša Med vodami : 100 let zgodovine rojstne hiše Branislave Sušnik v Medvodah
Henrike von Dewitz, Barbara Pregelj, 2020, scientific film, scientific sound or video publication

Abstract: dokumentarni film Henrike von Dewitz v sodelovanju z Barbaro Pregelj V projektu HIŠA MED VODAMI skušam sestaviti, skupaj z Barbaro Pregelj in prebivalci hiše in sosedi, zgodbo o rojstni hiši Branislave Sušnik.

Characterization of mechanical and barrier properties of bacterial cellulose, glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) composite films with eco-friendly UV-protective properties
Patricia Cazón, Gonzalo Velazquez, Manuel Vazquez, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: Highly flexible composite films based on bacterial cellulose, glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) with UV barrier properties were developed. The open nanoscale network of bacterial cellulose allowed to combine it with glycerol and polyvinyl alcohol by immersion. This procedure kept intact the bacterial cellulose structure. The interactions among bacterial cellulose, glycerol and PVOH were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. In general, the addition of PVOH reinforced the bacterial cellulose matrix, meanwhile glycerol showed a significant plasticizing effect. Formulations with PVOH and glycerol reached a maximum value of 49.89% of elongation and a good resistance to rupture of 13.78 MPa. The water vapour permeability ranged from 1.87·10−11 to 2.04·10−10 g/m s Pa. The UV-VIS spectral analysis showed that glycerol decreased the transmittance in the UV area and polyvinyl alcohol enhanced the transparency values of the samples in the VIS region. The transmittance in the UV-A, UV-B and UV- C areas for films based on bacterial cellulose with glycerol reached up to 5.59, 2.4 and 0.57%, respectively.

Applications of Chitosan as Food Packaging Materials
Patricia Cazón, Manuel Vazquez, 2019, review, book review, critique

Abstract: The interest in biopolymers has increased due to the depletion of the fossil fuel reserve and the environmental impact caused by the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic-based packaging materials. Many biopolymers have been developed from food waste products to reduce this waste and, at the same time, to obtain new food packaging materials. Chitosan is thus an alternative to synthetic polymers, and a raw material for new materials. To assess the suitability of a material as a food packaging material, it is necessary to study their mechanical and permeability properties. Mechanical properties allow to predict the behaviour of films during transportation, handling and storage of packaged foods. Barrier properties play a key role in maintaining the food product quality. Properties values depend on the type of chitosan used. Mechanical and barrier properties of pure chitosan films are suitable for food packaging and active packaging. These properties can be modified by combining chitosan with other components such as plasticizers, other polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. These combinations adapt the properties of the final polymer to the needs of the food to extend its useful life, while maintaining quality properties of the food and the biodegradability of the polymer. Chitosan displays antimicrobial activity against a wide range of foodborne filamentous fungi, yeast, and gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. This antimicrobial property and film-forming capacity has made chitosan the reference polymer to develop active packaging with the ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and improve food safety. Regarding the optical properties, pure chitosan films in the visible range show high transmittance values, being optically transparent films. This is an important parameter related to the acceptability of the films by the consumer. In addition, chitosan-based films exhibit remarkable UV absorbance, which allows to protect food from lipid oxidations induced by UV radiation.
