Collaborative lessons in a cross-border space : learning each other's language, literature and history on the basis of the CoBLaLT model
Ivana Zajc, 2023, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: In the paper we propose a new paradigm for teaching literature, language and history in cross-border territories from the point of view of cross-border didactics and cross-curricular collaboration at the higher elementary school level. Based on the CoBLaLT model, we propose interdisciplinar activities for students of two cross-border classes on both sides of the Slovenian-Italian border, who, while studying picture books written in Slovenian, meet via online platforms and live. They get to know each other, learn the languages of other students, experience literature and the art of illustration, and above all experience the complex history of the area where they live.

Augmented Reality as a Medium for Connecting Real and Literary Spaces
Aleš Vaupotič, Narvika Bovcon, 2022, unpublished conference contribution

Abstract: At the border between Slovenia and Italy there are two cities, Gorizia and Nova Gorica, connected and functioning as one, or separated by conflict in different times in history. The literatures in Slovenian, Italian, German and Friulian languages have described the complex issues that have tailored the life of people of various nationalities in this region in the 20th century. In 2018 we have participated in the EDUKA 2 project that had the goal of gathering the literary works that address the problem of coexistence in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Excerpts from these works were published in two text books for secondary schools, translated in all three languages. Our part in the project was building an augmented reality literary itinerary in the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia, that connected the literary works with related geolocations. The paper will present, how the existence of people of different nationalities at the same place is articulated in literature: selected examples of poetry and novels (Pahor, Madieri, Tomizza, Rilke, Pasolini, Gradnik, ...) will be discussed. The experiences described in literature were interpreted and translated into a visual form, virtual 3-D models were built and placed at selected geolocated spots. The translation between the literary and visual form will be discussed. The user experience of our literary itinerary will be compared to the existing literary itineraries in Gorizia and Trieste, there are many, and all contain historical data, images, videos and texts related to the complexities of coexistence. Finally the medium of augmented reality will be presented considering its different types that involve the user, the space, the camera of a mobile device and a projected image on the screen in different ways. This is relevant in the time, when spatial restrictions have surfaced in an unexpected way: due to the pandemic the spaces have been separated again and the virtual messages in augmented reality are considered either as intruders in a private space in the tele-communication, or as real presences in the real space that cannot be visited.

Italian Humanist Photography from Fascism to the Cold War
Martina Caruso, scientific monograph

Abstract: Spanning four decades of radical political and social change in Italy, this interdisciplinary study explores photography’s relationship with Italian painting, film, literature, anthropological research and international photography. Evocative and powerful, Italian social documentary photography from the 1930s to the 1960s is a rich source of cultural history, reflecting a time of dramatic change. This book shows, through a wide range of images (some published for the first time) that to fully understand the photography of this period we must take a more expansive view than scholars have applied to date, considering issues of propaganda, aesthetics, religion, national identity and international influences. By setting Italian photography against a backdrop of social documentary and giving it a distinctive place in the global history of photography, this exciting volume of original research is of interest to art historians and scholars of Italian and visual culture studies.

From Minor Literature to Neoliberal Noir: The Detective Novels of Sergej Verc
Primož Mlačnik, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: In this article, we analyze the politics of representation in the detective tetralogy (1991-2009) of the late Slovenian and Triestinian writer Sergej Verč. Addressing several aspects of Verč’s primary literary semiotic device of schizophrenia, we trace a simultaneous literary and chronological shift from minor literature to neoliberal noir. We expose the fundamental representational ambiguity by analyzing the detective triad (murder-victim-criminal), the fetishization of detective clues, the erotization of detection, and the underlying binary oppositions. Verč’s detective novels critique the Slovenian capitalist transition but also reproduce culturally conservative representations of gender, sexuality, and family.

ROUND TABLE: TRANSLATION IN AN INTERCULTURAL CONTEXT
Barbara Pregelj, Ilide Carmignani, Elisabeth Pérez Fernández, Mariela Nagle, other performed works

Abstract: Translating children's books into different cultures means not only processing the text into another language, but also transferring the level of illustration, which is an additional challenge. There, the different realities of children's lives play a big role: environment, skin colour, religion, etc. as well as cultural paradigms.
