A new optical-based technique for real-time measurements of mineral dust concentration in PM10 using a virtual impactor

Opis: Atmospheric mineral dust influences Earth’s radiative budget, cloud formation, and lifetime; has adverse health effects; and affects air quality through the increase of regulatory PM10 concentrations, making its real-time quantification in the atmosphere of strategic importance. Only few near-real-time techniques can discriminate dust aerosol in PM10 samples and they are based on the dust chemical composition. The online determination of mineral dust using aerosol absorption photometers offers an interesting and competitive alternative but remains a difficult task to achieve. This is particularly challenging when dust is mixed with black carbon, which features a much higher mass absorption cross section. We build on previous work using filter photometers and present here for the first time a highly timeresolved online technique for quantification of mineral dust concentration by coupling a high-flow virtual impactor (VI) sampler that concentrates coarse particles with an aerosol absorption photometer (Aethalometer, model AE33). The absorption of concentrated dust particles is obtained by subtracting the absorption of the submicron (PM1) aerosol fraction from the absorption of the virtual impactor sample (VIPM1 method). This real-time method for detecting desert dust was tested in the field for a period of 2 months (April and May 2016) at a regional background site of Cyprus, in the Eastern Mediterranean. Role of Cu current collector on electrochemical mechanism of Mg–S battery

Opis: Development of magnesium sulfur battery is accompanied with all known difficulties present in Li–S batteries, however with even more limited choice of electrolytes. In the present work, the influence of current collector on electrochemical mechanism was investigated in light of different reports where improved behavior was ascribed to electrolyte. Notable differences in cycling behavior are reported when Al current collector is replaced by Cu current collector independent of electrolyte. The initial reduction of sulfur follows similar reaction path no mater of current collector, but formation of MgS can be in competition with formation of CuS in the presence of Cu cations. With the subsequent cycling cells prepared from cathodes deposited on Cu current collector show decrease in the voltage and formation of single plateau during cycling. The change corresponds to the involvement of Cu into the reaction and formation of redox couple Mg/CuS as determined by Cu K-edge XANES measurements. Corrosion of Cu foil is identified by SEM and serves as a source of Cu cations for the chemical reaction between Cu and polysulfides. Mg/CuS redox couple shows improved cycling stability, but theoretical energy density is severely reduced due to substitution of S with CuS as cathode active material.

ANALIZA VINSKEGA TURIZMA V VIPAVSKI DOLINI

Opis: Na začetku diplomske naloge smo najprej predstavili zgodovino vinske trte in vina. V naslednjem poglavju je opredeljen pojem turizem in kako se je turizem razvijal v Sloveniji. Zaradi samega naslova diplomskega dela smo opredelili tudi pojem vinski turizem, predstavili njegove prednosti in slabosti ter opredelili vinskega turista. Pri samem vinskem turistu imamo imamo demografske in psihografske značilnosti ter njegove motivacijske dejavnike. Na kratko smo povzeli vinogradništvo in vinarstvo v Sloveniji, preko katerega naloga preide na ožjo vinorodno deželo Primorska in iz te naprej v Vipavsko dolino. Vipavska dolina ima bogato zgodovino kot tudi gastronomijo. Ena od prepoznavnih značilnosti v Vipavski dolini je tudi osmica, na katero prihaja veliko ljudi iz drugih regij ter iz sosednjih držav, najpogosteje iz Italije. Vinska ponudba v dolini je zelo bogata. Pohvalimo se lahko z nekaj avtohtonimi sortami, najbolj znani pa sta zagotovo Zelen in Pinela. Naredili smo tudi manjšo primerjavo med mestom Dunaj v sosednji državi Avstriji in Vipavsko dolino v Sloveniji. Primerjali smo vinogradništvo in vinarstvo, vinoteke, restavracije, kmečke gostilne in nastanitve. Proti koncu diplomske naloge smo se na kratko posvetili tudi Vipavski vinski cesti, za konec pa smo naredili intervju z vinarjem o vinskem turizmu v Vipavski dolini.

Regional biodiversity and seasonal dynamics of the bacterial communities in karstic springs of Slovenia

Opis: Information on groundwater’s natural bacterial communities is important for evaluating pristine groundwater’s quality, as environmental changes potentially lead to alterations in bacterial community structures. In four seasons, 15 hypothetically pristine springs across five karst eco-regions in Slovenia (Central Europe) were analysed during their low discharge, and their basic physical and chemical parameters were recorded. The diversity of bacterial community structures was assessed with a terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting method. Total cell counts as bacterial abundance and electron transport system activity as bacterial respiratory activity were used for quantitative evaluation of bacterial communities. To detect anthropogenic pollution, spring water was tested by the cultivation of coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Results indicate distinct regional differences in environmental parameters, bacterial respiratory activity, presence of coliforms and E. coli, bacterial abundances, and qualitative bacterial community structures, but there were no regional differences in the numbers of operational taxonomic units and biodiversity indices (Shannon-Wiener’s and Simpson’s diversity index, Buzas and Gibson’s evenness). The analysis of seasonal environmental parameters showed significant differences in dissolved organic carbon and pH, and also significant changes in bacterial respiratory activity and abundances, as well as differences in bacterial community structures, the numbers of operational taxonomic units, and biodiversity indices. No seasonal variations were shown for coliforms and E. coli. Despite seasonal oscillations, regional differences prevailed among five karst eco-regions and indicate a significant influence on the qualitative and quantitative aspects of groundwater bacterial community structures. The study confirmed both regional and seasonal differences in groundwater bacterial community structures, which should be included in further sustainable management plans of the aquifers.
