Interplay among Work Function, electronic structure and stoichiometry in nanostructured VOx films
2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The work function is the parameter of greatest interest in many technological applications involving charge exchange mechanisms at the interface. The possibility to produce samples with a controlled work function is then particularly interesting, albeit challenging. We synthetized nanostructured vanadium oxide films by a room temperature Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition method, obtaining samples with tunable stoichiometry and work function (3.7-7 eV). We present an investigation of the electronic structure of several vanadium oxide films as a function of the oxygen content via in-situ Auger, valence-band photoemission spectroscopy and work function measurements. The experiments probed the partial 3d density of states, highlighting the presence of strong V3d-O2p and V3d-V4s hybridization which influence 3d occupation. We show how controlling the stoichiometry of the sample implies control over work function, and that the access to nanoscale quantum confinement can be exploited to increase the work function of the sample relative to the bulk analogue. In general, the knowledge of the interplay among work function, electronic structure, and stoichiometry is strategic to match nanostructured oxides to their target applications

Looking for a topological insulator in the tetradymite family
Zipporah Rini Benher, Sandra Gardonio, Mattia Fanetti, Polina M. Sheverdyaeva, Paolo Moras, Matjaž Valant, 2019, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: Materials that are topological insulators (TI) manifest a novel state for their electrons. They possess topological surface states that are not destroyed by the presence of non-magnetic impurities on their surfaces. This unique property lies in the bulk band structure and it is typically found in narrow gap semiconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling. Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 belong to the class of compounds called tetradymites and are considered as the 3D-prototypical TI materials. However, these compounds are not usually insulators but have metallic bulk conductivity as a consequence of intrinsic defect doping: vacancies and anti-site defects. For these reasons, it is difficult to electrically gate these materials for the manipulation and control of charge carriers for realizing devices. This led to the search for other topological materials, which might have better insulating behavior in their bulk. Theoretical studies have pointed out that ternary variants of the Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, such as Bi2Te2Se, Bi2Te2S, Bi2Se2S Sb2Te2Se and Sb2Te2S, should be stable TIs and potentially offer a chemical way to control TI behavior, in particular by lowering native doping. Among the cited ternary compounds, Bi2Se2S should manifest a genuine topological spin-transport regime hosting an isolated Dirac cone with the Dirac point in the gap as well. However, it has been poorly studied from the TI experimental perspective. Therefore, to uncover the full potential of the predicted topological electronic properties of the Bi-Se-S system, in this presentation we will revisit the crystallographic and electronic structure of Bi2Se3-Bi2S3 solid solutions. The combined use of bulk and surface sensitive techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to analyze single crystal samples grown by us. The quality of the single crystals was suitable for rigorous measurement of the electronic properties by means of Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. We unambiguously showed that within a certain solid solution range, the single crystals of Bi-Se-S have a rombohedral structure with the topological surface states as theoretically predicted.

STUDY OF ELECTRONIC STATES OF THIN METAL FILMS ON HEAVY METAL SURFACES : MASTER'S THESIS
Luka Novinec, 2018, magistrsko delo

S pomo £jo kotno odvisne fotoemisije smo preu£evali kvantna stanja v Fe in Yb filmih na Mo in W kristalih. Celotno eksperimentalno delo je potekalo na ºarkovnih linijah VUV-Photoemission in²tituta (ISM-CNR) ter BaDElPh pri sinhrotronu Elettra v Trstu.

Au and Ag on the Bi2Se3(0001) Surface: Experimental Electronic and Physical Properties
Sandra Gardonio, Mattia Fanetti, Katja Ferfolja, Matjaž Valant, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: Binary bismuth chalcogenides, Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, have been extensively studied as reference topological insulators (TIs). These materials are bulk insulators with topological surface states (TSS) crossing the Fermi level. In contrast to conventional surface states of metals, the TSS are extremely robust against local modifications at the surface, such as adsorbed adatoms, localized defects or changes in the surface termination. This aspect makes the TIs attractive for applications in spintronics, plasmonics, quantum computing and catalysis. A theoretical model of charge transport by the TI surface states predicts that the TSS survive, provided that bonding at the metal/TI interface is weak. Ab-initio calculations have been done to understand the electronic properties of Au, Ni, Pt, Pd and graphene layers in a contact with Bi2Se3. These calculations showed that for Au and graphene the spin-momentum locking of TSS is maintained at the interface. In another theoretical study, Ag and Au thin layers on Bi2Se3 have been predicted to show a large Rashba splitting and a high spin polarization of the Ag quantum wells, providing a great potential for development of the spintronic devices. Finally, the calculations have foreseen that the presence of the robust TSS affects the adsorption properties of metals (Au bi-layer and clusters of Au, Ag, Cu, Pt, and Pd) supported on TI, in some cases resulting in the enhancement of the catalytic processes. Despite the fundamental importance of the metal/TI interfaces and a number of theoretical studies predicting exotic interfacial phenomena, the experimental knowledge about the metals on the TI surfaces is surprisingly limited, especially concerning combined study of morphology, growth mode, electronic and chemical properties. In order to exploit the predicted physical properties of such systems, it is especially important to extend the study above the diluted coverage regime and to understand what is the growth morphology of the metal on the TI surface, to what extent the metal overlayer interacts with the TI substrate, how the TSS change with the presence of the metal overlayer and what is the reactivity of the system at the different stages of the overlayer growth. Within this frame, we present a comprehensive surface sensitive study, of Au and Ag on Bi2Se3 by means of ARPES, XPS, SEM, LEED and XRD. The obtained results allow us to discuss the relation between electronic and physical properties at two of the most important model metal/TI interfaces

Condensations and Extensions : A Responsive Text between Artefact, Experience and Contex
Aleš Vaupotič, Narvika Bovcon, 2017, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: Every reading of a text follows a complex mechanism, which is outlined in phenomenological terms in Roman Ingarden's Das literarische Kunstwerk (1930) and later in reader-response criticism. Also Roland Barthes's explorations of intertextuality point in a similar direction of the text as heterogeneous and open texture. The complex mechanisms that allow the reader to gain meanings and construct represented objects etc. are scrutinized to emphasize the importance of the reader's collaboration in the readerly act and the transformations to the textual experience that depend on historical circumstances, on cultural and personal experience of the reader. Considering these critical traditions, any text is always interactive, an ad hoc construct, it comes to life only in contact with alien contexts whereby it virtually looses its supposed lasting identity. In Theorising the Digital Scholarly Edition (Literature Compass 7.2, 2010) Hans Walter Gabler attempts to provide a conceptual framework for a critical scholarly edition, a text genre which is supposed to preserve the original documents and the texts and/or works. However, Gabler rejects the ideology of preservation of memory in the »pure« form and argues for a relational and contextual idea of edition as a »knowledge site«. In addition, he states that the digital medium and the print medium can coexist since they serve different purposes, the printed edition is used for reading and the digital one for »use« and study purposes. The so-called old scholarly editions (pre-positivist) had a strong emphasis on the commentary, which added to the authorial function of the editor as the mediator between the vast textual archive and the receptive abilities of the addressee. Text-edition as a dynamic and collaborative »knowledge site« is sometimes introduced by the characteristics of a particular text. Dora García's art project and video installation The Joycean Society (2013) documents with a video (53 min.) and by exhibiting artefacts the reading process of the mysterious Finnegan's Wake (1939) by James Joyce, the multiple readings within a single heterogeneous reading group of the same book for 30 years. The second case study is the artist's book by a Slovenian net.artist Teo Spiller Znakovnost novih medijev (Semiotics of New Media, 2011). The printed illustrated pages are intended to be read in parallel with browsing the online versions of the art projects presented. Another key dimension of such book-projects is the swift change and disappearance of the on-line part of this plural reading-interface. The third example considered are the projects by Jaka Želaznikar, a Slovene digital poet, that relate to the works of one of the main Slovenian poets Tomaž Šalamun (1941-2014). Among them Železnikar's on-line project Izbris Šalamun (Deletion Šalamun, 2015), which is an on-line edition of two poetry books by Šalamun, Letni čas (Season, 2010) and Ta, ki dviga tačko, spi (The one, who rises the paw, sleeps, 2015), enables the reader to selectively delete the words from poems. The text will examine the reader's reception of the poems in the printed version and in the on-line interface. In this case, too, the context of the edition will be considered (the link with the publishing house and the printed edition, the role in promotion activities of the on-line edition in respect to the printed one).
