3. Intervention effects on NPIs and feature movement : towards a unified account of interventionElena Guerzoni, 2006, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this paper, I explore the possibility of understanding locality restrictions on the distribution of Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) as a consequence of covert movement. The present proposal restates Linebarger’s Immediate Scope Constraint in terms of morphology-driven checking requirements. These requirements cannot be met if a blocking element intervenes between the NPI feature and its morphosemantic licenser at Logical Form (LF). The empirical generalization is that the class of NPI ‘blocking expressions’ (a.k.a. ‘interveners’) overlaps to a large extent with interveners identified in wh-questions. Therefore, the same grammatical checking mechanisms operating in that domain, rather than the presence of an implicature, are here shown to be responsible both for apparent violations to Linebarger’s constraint (contra Linebarger) and for intervention effects (contra Krifka, 1995, and Chierchia, 2004). This approach is argued to be superior on empirical grounds as it predicts facts that are left unaccounted for in a theory like Linebarger’s, where pragmatics rescues otherwise ill-formed structures. In addition, the proposal allows us to view the locality constraints operating in the domain of NPI-licensing as an instance of more general (though yet to be fully understood) principles of the grammar whose effects are attested in other domains, such as wh-questions in German, Discourselinked (D-linked) wh-questions in English, and Negative Concord (NC) configurations (e.g. in Italian and French). 4. Number mismatch effect and processing cataphora in a pro-drop language : the case of SlovenianMatic Pavlič, Arthur Stepanov, 2023, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Cataphora (also known as backward anaphora) is a type of pronominals that prcede their antecedents elinearly. Previous research on processing cataphora has explored the idea that cataphoric pronouns trigger a forward-looking active search for an antecedent to establish a coreference relation similar to a filler-gap dependency between a fronted wh-phrase and its base-generated syntactic position
(Cowart & Cairns 1987). Van Gompel & Liversedge (2003) have shown that in an active search, the parser establishes a cataphoric coreference before considering pronominal phi-features. This results in a gender mismatch effect: sentences with incongruent incoming NP antecedents were more difficult to read than their congruent counterparts, as evidenced by slower reading times and eye movement regressions. In this paper, we report the results of a self-paced reading experiment in which the active search hypothesis is further tested by examining online cataphora resolution with respect to the number feature in Slovenian, a pro-drop language with a rich nominal and verbal morphology. 7. Phase Portrait for High Fidelity Feature Extraction and Classification: A Surrogate ApproachMohanachandran Nair Sindhu Swapna, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper proposes a novel surrogate method of classification of breath sound signals for auscultation through the principal component
analysis (PCA), extracting the features of a phase portrait. The nonlinear parameters of the phase portrait like the Lyapunov exponent, the
sample entropy, the fractal dimension, and the Hurst exponent help in understanding the degree of complexity arising due to the turbulence
of air molecules in the airways of the lungs. Thirty-nine breath sound signals of bronchial breath (BB) and pleural rub (PR) are studied
through spectral, fractal, and phase portrait analyses. The fast Fourier transform and wavelet analyses show a lesser number of high-intense,
low-frequency components in PR, unlike BB. The fractal dimension and sample entropy values for PR are, respectively, 1.772 and 1.041, while
those for BB are 1.801 and 1.331, respectively. This study reveals that the BB signal is more complex and random, as evidenced by the fractal
dimension and sample entropy values. The signals are classified by PCA based on the features extracted from the power spectral density (PSD)
data and the features of the phase portrait. The PCA based on the features of the phase portrait considers the temporal correlation of the signal
amplitudes and that based on the PSD data considers only the signal amplitudes, suggesting that the former method is better than the latter
as it reflects the multidimensional aspects of the signal. This appears in the PCA-based classification as 89.6% for BB, a higher variance than
the 80.5% for the PR signal, suggesting the higher fidelity of the phase portrait-based classification. Ključne besede: Phase Portrait, time series, feature extraction, pleural rub Objavljeno v RUNG: 05.07.2022; Ogledov: 2100; Prenosov: 0 Gradivo ima več datotek! Več... |

9. Explicit Feature Construction and Manipulation for Covering Rule Learning AlgorithmsNada Lavrač, Johannes Fuernkranz, Dragan Gamberger, 2010, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: Features are the main rule building blocks for rule learning algorithms. They can be simple tests for attribute values or complex logical terms representing available domain knowledge. In contrast to common practice in classification rule learning, we argue that separation of the feature construction and rule construction processes has theoretical and practical justification. Explicit usage of features enables a unifying framework of both propositional and relational rule learning and we present and analyze procedures for feature construction in both types of domains. It is demonstrated that the presented procedure for constructing a set of simple features has the property that the resulting set enables construction of complete and consistent rules whenever it is possible, and that the set does not include obviously irrelevant features. Additionally, the concept of feature relevancy is important for the effectiveness of rule learning. It this work, we illustrate the concept in the coverage space and
prove that the relative relevancy has the quality-preserving property in respect to the resulting rules. Moreover, we show that the transformation from the attribute to the feature space enables a novel, theoretically justified way of handling unknown attribute values. The same approach
enables that estimated imprecision of continuous attributes can be taken into account, resulting in construction of robust features in respect to this imprecision. 10. Agreement errors and structural distance: A corpus study of BulgarianPenka Stateva, Arthur Stepanov, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this work we address the phenomenon of substitution of the special “count form” suffix of masculine non-person nouns in Bulgarian numeral phrases for a simple plural morpheme. This substitution phenomenon is observed in everyday speech and writing and is noted by traditional Bulgarian grammarians. We propose to treat this phenomenon on a par with agreement errors previously investigated in the language production literature on English (e.g. “The editor of the books are...”) and on the Romance languages. We conducted a corpus study of agreement substitution errors in Bulgarian, the results of which support the psycholinguistic theories maintaining, in particular, that structural hierarchy is relevant for the computation of agreement in language production.
