2. Existing open data practices in high energy astro- and particle physics : lecture at the Mini workshop on Open Science, 6. 11. 2024, AjdovščinaSerguei Vorobiov, 2024, prispevek na konferenci brez natisa Opis: In this presentation, the existing open data practices in high energy astro-, particle and astroparticle physics are presented. Open data has become fundamental in astrophysics, particle, and astroparticle physics, enhancing collaboration, reproducibility, and transparency, while accelerating innovation. A recent shift toward openness, marked by data-sharing initiatives and accessible resources, is driving breakthroughs like the multi-messenger observation of GW170817, a neutron star merger detected in both gravitational waves and gamma rays, and the identification of blazar TXS 0506+056 as a high-energy neutrino source.
Across these fields, robust efforts are underway to develop and implement FAIR-compliant data policies, with a wide array of supportive tools, standards, protocols, and software already in use (Virtual Observatory in astrophysics, CERN’s Open Data Portal in particle physics, ...).
The challenges of astroparticle physics data, often more complex than traditional astrophysics
or particle physics data, call for additional coordination and technical advancements to meet
FAIR principles effectively. Machine learning also plays a transformative role in these domains, enhancing the analysis of both proprietary and open data to reveal new insights and optimize
research methodologies. Ključne besede: open data, FAIR data, astrophysics, high-energy particle physics, astroparticle physics, multi-messenger astronomy Objavljeno v RUNG: 06.01.2025; Ogledov: 453; Prenosov: 2

3. Promoting the use of open educational resources to improve teaching and learning of science subjects in secondary schools in Tanzania : master's thesisLucian Vumilia Ngeze, 2024, magistrsko delo Opis: A number of challenges have hindered the integration of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in schools from developing countries. The rate of adoption of OERs in teaching and learning in schools in Tanzania is low. This research focused on capacity of secondary school science teachers on creating and adapting open educational resources to improve the teaching and learning of science subjects. The research used a Design-based Research methodology to achieve research objectives.
Results show that challenges such as lack of ICT devices, poor Internet connection, network accessibility issues, unstable power supply and large class sizes hindered the integration of OER in the teaching of science subjects. As teachers created OERs, they stated factors such as levels of the learners, developing engaging content, simple and self-explanatory content, alignment with learning objectives and relevancy of OER as initial considerations they considered when creating OERs. It was important to investigate the change in teachers’ attitude towards the use of OER in teaching science subjects OER creation ability, OER in teaching, teaching improvements, increased teaching resources, and application of skills.
It was concluded that regular teacher professional development programmes must be set to support school teachers in using OERs to improve teaching and learning and in creating OER for teaching. Engaging with relevant government bodies is encouraged to ensure that more teachers are involved in such developed online courses. 4. STRENGTHENING ENERGY AND CLIMATE LITERACY WITH MICROLEARNING AND OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCESMojca Drevenšek, 2023, magistrsko delo Opis: This master’s thesis is motivated by the desire to actively engage Slovenian youth in co-creating our energy and climate future. The background is the growing interest in effective energy transition at the national, EU and global levels, and we specifically focus on the role of education in achieving this goal. The main problem we address is the need for improvement of energy- and climate-related non-formal youth education to increase their interest in the topic, and motivate their engagement in public discussions and the policy-making processes. To tackle this problem, we use the existing En-ROADS energy and climate interactive simulation tool and the accompanying online training series and complement it with new learning materials and learning activities, developed in our educational project. Our approach focuses on open education practices and the co-creation of open educational resources (OER), supported by microlearning via social media (Instagram). We develop a novel approach to address the problem by involving youth in a non-formal open educational process where they are invited to co-create the content and format of learning materials, decide on the technologies used, and affect the implementational process of the key learning activities. The main contributions of the thesis are the developed OERs, which can be adapted, reused or remixed by other stakeholders in the field of energy and climate education, and the recommendations for educators both in the field of energy and climate topics as well as in other fields, related to education for sustainable development. The main methodological finding of the thesis focuses on the importance of flexibility and adaptation of learning materials and activities according to the expressed interests and expectations of young learners. Their feedback needs to be carefully gathered and integrated into the implementation of the project. 5. Outreach activities at the Pierre Auger ObservatoryK.S. Caballero-Mora, Jon Paul Lundquist, 2022, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: The Pierre Auger Observatory, sited in Malargüe, Argentina, is the largest observatory available for measuring ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR). The Auger Collaboration has measured and analysed an unprecedented number of UHECRs. Along with making important scientific discoveries, for example, the demonstration that cosmic rays above 8 EeV are of extragalactic origin and the observation of a new feature in the energy spectrum at around 13 EeV, outreach work has been carried out across the 18 participating countries and online. This program ranges from talks to a varied audience, to the creation of a local Visitor Center, which attracts 8000 visitors annually, to initiating masterclasses. Permanent and temporary exhibitions have been prepared both in reality and virtually. Science fairs for elementary- and high-school students have been organised, together with activities associated with interesting phenomena such as eclipses. In addition, we participate in international events such as the International Cosmic Day, Frontiers from H2020, and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Part of the Collaboration website is aimed at the general public. Here the most recent articles published are summarised. Thus the Collaboration informs people about work in our field, which may seem remote from everyday life. Furthermore, the Auger Observatory has been a seed for scientific and technological activities in and around Malargüe. Different outreach ventures that already have been implemented and others which are foreseen will be described. 7. Measuring data quality across open government datasetsRajan Gupta, Sushmita Yadav, Avinash Prasad, Saibal K. Pal, 2019, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: Data Quality has become the base for any analytical operation or modelling. Poor Quality of data can lead to poor analytical modeling, which in turn can lead to poor decision making and predictions, which can finally impact the revenue and working of an organization. This is true for both public and private sector organizations. With rise in E-Governance, lot of nations and their respective public sector units are making use of publicly available datasets. But are these datasets reliable and have good quality. This is the major research question studied in this paper. The study collected publicly available datasets from Open Government Data platforms across 8 different nations around the world. More than 300 datasets having roughly 3.5 million rows were assessed for various data quality measures. The various parameters studied for the data were valid data types, correctness, completeness, statistical features, variability, comparability, duplicacy and the likes. Script was written in R to check the value for various measures. It was found that different countries had advantages on different parameters. Not one country was found to have all the parameters to be of high quality. Different ranges were found for the dataset for various parameters which was helpful in determining the overall quality of the dataset. This will be helpful for various public and private sector organizations in assessing the quality of datasets they intend to work on. Substantial efforts and resources can be saved on Advanced Analytics if the quality of dataset can be determined in advance. The proposed data quality assessment model can be applied on any private or public dataset. Different industry and organizations can set different threshold values for the parameters to benchmark their analytical process. Both practitioners and researchers can be benefitted from this research work.
