Opis: The scale and scope of the physics studied at the Pierre Auger Observatory continue to offer significant opportunities for original outreach work. Education, outreach and public relations of the Auger Collaboration are coordinated in a dedicated task whose goals are to encourage and support a wide range of efforts that link schools and the public with the Auger scientists and the science of cosmic rays, particle physics, and associated technologies. We focus on the impact of the Collaboration in Mendoza Province, Argentina and beyond. The Auger Visitor Center in Malargüe has hosted over 95,000 visitors since 2001, and a fifth Collaboration-sponsored science fair was held on the Observatory campus in November 2014. The Rural Schools Program, which is run by Observatory staff and which brings cosmic-ray science and infrastructure improvements to remote schools, continues to broaden its reach. Numerous online resources, video documentaries, and animations of extensive air showers have been created for wide public release. Increasingly, collaborators draw on these resources to develop Auger related displays and outreach events at their institutions and in public settings to disseminate the science and successes of the Observatory worldwide. We also highlight education and outreach activities associated with the planned upgrade of the Observatory’s detector systems and future physics goals.

Search for UHE neutrinos – in coincidence with LIGO GW150914 event – with the Pierre Auger Observatory
Lili Yang, 2016, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: The first gravitational wave transient GW150914 was observed by Advanced LIGO on September 14th, 2015 at 09:50:45 Universal Time. In addition to follow-up electromagnetic observations, the detection of neutrinos will probe deeply and more on the nature of astrophysical sources, especially in the ultra-high energy regime. Neutrinos in the EeV energy range were searched in data collected at the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory within ± 500 s and 1 day after the GW150914 event. No neutrino candidates were found. Based on this non-observation, we derive the first and only one neutrino fluence upper limit at EeV energies for this event at 90% CL, and report constraints on existence of accretion disk around mergers.

Search for Physics beyond the Standard Model with the CRESST Experiment
2017, magistrsko delo

Opis: In spite of the successes of observational astro- and particle physics and cosmology very much of the universe remains unknown. The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory describing the electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear interactions, as well as classifying all the subatomic particles known. But there is overwhelming evidence, that all the known particles, the ordinary (baryonic) matter, the building blocks of planets, stars and ourselves, only make up about 4.9% of the energy content of the universe. The standard model of cosmology (CDM) indicates that the total mass-energy of the universe contains beside the 4.9% ordinary matter two other components: 26.8% dark matter and 68.3% dark energy. The accelerating expansion of the Universe is the result of the effect of the dark energy with its most simple form given by a cosmological constant in Einstein's Equation. Dark matter is an unidentified type of matter that is not accounted for by dark energy and neutrinos and is generally believed to be a non-relativistic, charge neutral and non-baryonic new form of matter. Although dark matter has not been directly observed yet, its existence and properties are inferred from its gravitational effects such as the motions of visible matter, gravitational lensing, its influence on the universe's large-scale structure, and its effects in the cosmic microwave background. Thus the search for Dark Matter is the search for physics beyond the standard model. Although the nature of dark matter is yet unknown, its presence is crucial to understanding the future of the universe. The CRESST experiment is searching for direct evidence in the form of a nuclear recoil induced on a scintillating CaWO4 crystal by a dark matter particle, and is installed and taking data underground at Laboratory Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. While both, dark energy and dark matter, have not been detected directly, a class of dark matter particles that interact only via gravity and the weak force, referred to asWeakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), has been established as the leading candidate among the dark matter community. For this thesis a special model of dark matter was studied, namely the dark photon. This thesis provides a detailed description of the calculation of the 90% upper limit on the dark photon kinetic mixing based on data from the second phase of the CRESST experiment. The analysis was carried out in a frequentist approach based on the (unbinned) maximum-likelihood method and likelihood ratios. To make a statement about the calculated result and its quality, the used algorithm had to be tested, what was done with Monte Carlo simulations (pseudo data).

SIFTING FOR SAPPHIRES: SYSTEMATIC SELECTION OF TIDAL DISRUPTION EVENTS IN iPTF
Tiara Hung, Suvi Gezari, Tanja Petrushevska, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We present results from a systematic selection of tidal disruption events (TDEs) in a wide area (4800 deg2 ) g + R band experiment by the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) with a rolling cadence of 1 and 3 days. We use photometric selection criteria to down select from a total of 493 nuclear transients detected during the experiment to a sample of 26 blue (g − r < 0 mag) nuclear transients in red host galaxies. Using Swift follow-up UV and X-ray imaging, and ground-based optical spectroscopy, we classify 14 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), 9 highly variable active galactic nuclei (AGNs), 2 confirmed TDEs, and 1 potential core-collapse supernova. From our study, we measure a TDE per galaxy rate of 1.7 +2.85 −1.27 ×10−4 gal−1 yr−1 (90% CL in Poisson statistics) using a galaxy number density estimated from the SDSS luminosity function. We find that it is possible to filter out AGNs by employing a more stringent transient color cut (g − r < −0.2 mag). The UV is an important discriminator for filtering out SN contamination, since in the optical, SNe Ia can appear as blue as TDEs in their early phases. However, the contamination from SN Ia drops significantly with a more stringent spatial offset cut, suggesting higher precision in astrometry is essential for separating TDEs from SNe Ia in the optical. Our most stringent optical photometric selection criteria yields a contamination rate of 4.5:1, allowing for a manageable number of TDE candidates for complete spectroscopic follow-up and real-time classification in the ZTF era.

Energy enhancement of the target surface electron by using a 200 TW sub-picosecond laser
J. Y. Mao, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: One order of magnitude energy enhancement of the target surface electron beams with central energy at 11.5 MeV is achieved by using a 200 TW, 500 fs laser at an incident angle of 72° with a prepulse intensity ratio of 5×10−6. The experimental results demonstrate the scalability of the acceleration process to high electron energy with a longer (sub-picosecond) laser pulse duration and a higher laser energy (120 J). The total charge of the beam is 400±20 pC(
