2. How to ask the obvious : a presuppositional account of evidential bias in English yes/no questionsTue Trinh, 2014, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: English can express the basic meaning of a yes/no question in several ways, for example with or without sentential negation, and with or without subject auxiliary inversion. In this paper, we discuss how the presence of contextual clue with respect to one or the other answer to a yes/no question determines which formal variants of the question are felicitous. We then derive these syntax-pragmatics interactions from Heim’s principle of Maximize Presupposition, Stalnaker’s Bridge Principle and Grice’s Maxim of Manner, each formulated in a particular way, together with the assumption that the lexicon of English contains a silent evidential marker which exhibits familiar syntactic and semantic properties. 3. The interpretation of the German additive particle auch ('too, also') in quantificational contextsMadeleine Butschety, 2022, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: This article discusses an unexpected interpretation that arises for the German additive particle auch (‘too, also’) in quantificational contexts. It will be proposed that what auch conveys in such contexts is a superset-to-subset relation between two of its arguments. This rather unusual meaning and its alternation with the classical additive meaning will be argued to be tied to specific syntactic constructions in which the particle occurs. The main purpose of this article is to present novel data and make a tentative suggestion on how the correspondence between syntactic structure and semantic interpretation could be explained. 7. Even-NPIs in yes/no questionsElena Guerzoni, 2004, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: It has been a long-standing puzzle that Negative Polarity Items appear to split into two subvarieties when their effect on the interpretation of questions is taken into account: while questions with any and ever can be used as unbiased requests of information, questions with so-called `minimizers', i.e. idioms like lift a finger and the faintest idea, are always biased towards a negative answer (cf. Ladusaw 1979). Focusing on yes/no questions, this paper presents a solution to this puzzle. Specifically it is shown that in virtue of containing even (cf. Heim 1984), minimizers, unlike any, trigger a presupposition, which reduces the set of the possible answers to a question to the singleton containing the negative answer. 8. Developmental aspects of Maximize Presupposition : a view from SlovenianPenka Stateva, 2021, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci (vabljeno predavanje) Opis: In this talk I present the results of an experimental study of young children's acquisition and use of the principle Maximize Presupposition (MP) in the context of the propositional attitude predicates (equivalent to) know and think. MP operates in the domain of pragmatics in order to distinguish among semantically equivalent propositions which have different presuppositional load in a given context (Heim 1991, Sauerland 2008). Given its nature, demonstrating a speaker’s sensitivity to MP is contingent on knowledge about presuppositional content within a relevant set of alternatives. We use a felicity judgement task to test the ability of 5- and 7-year-old Slovenian-speaking children to derive the factive presupposition of know and the pragmatic inference trigerred by think in accord with MP. The older group of children outperformed the younger group in both conditions manifesting a ceiling performance, while the younger group showed a more mixed pattern. Our results suggest that the anti-factivity inference is mastered on a par with the ability to derive the presupposition of factivity, as predicted by contemporary pragmatic theories. The discussion will also include questions about the influence of bilingualism on developing pragmatic abilities, negative transfer in the domain of pragmatics and its dependence on cross-linguistic morpho-syntactic variation among translational equivalents. 9. Bilinguhildren's use of the Maximiza Presupposition PrinciplePenka Stateva, Sara Andreetta, Anne Reboul, Arthur Stepanov, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This article reports the results of an experimental study that examines the influence of bilingualism on the acquisition and use of the Maximize Presupposition principle in the context of speakers’ choices among propositional attitude predicates (equivalent to) know and think. We compared the performance of monolingual Slovenian- and
Italian-speaking school children to that of age-matched early bilingual children speaking both languages. Our findings suggest that while all children demonstrate adherence to Maximize Presupposition in an adult-like manner, bilingualism may enhance performance in pragmatic tasks that bear on this principle, and therefore constitutes a potential advantage in the relevant area. 10. “Monolingual and bilingual use of the maximize presupposition principle”Penka Stateva, predavanje na tuji univerzi Opis: This talk is an experimental investigation of the status of Maximize presupposition as an operative pragmatic principle that regulates speakers’ preferences among semantically equivalent attitude reports. We present results from two acquisitional studies. The first study explores sensitivity of 5 and 7-year old Slovenian-speaking children to the principle from a developmental perspective. The second study examines the influence of bilingualism on the use of this principle by comparing monolingual Slovenian and Italian children to early bilingual children acquiring both languages. The results suggest that while even the youngest children demonstrate adherence to Maximize presupposition in an adult-like manner, bilingualism affects performance in pragmatic tasks and constitutes a potential advantage in the relevant area.
