14. Large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropies with 19 yr of data from the Pierre Auger ObservatoryA. Abdul Halim, P. Abreu, M. Aglietta, Ingo Allekotte, K. Almeida Cheminant, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: We present results of the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of
ultra–high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 yr of operation,
prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are
reconstructed above 4 EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right
ascension above 8 EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the 8–16 EeV energy bin is now also above the 5σ
discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above 8 EeV is found, setting an upper limit
to the rate of change of such variations of 0.3% per year at the 95% confidence level. Additionally,
the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically
significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to 0.03 EeV are
presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for
lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based
on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above 0.6 EeV. 15. Environmental priorities in the circular economy : examples from iron-based technologiesAndreea Oarga-Mulec, Uroš Luin, Keith R. Skene, Matjaž Valant, 2024, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: The circular economy (CE) framework is crucial for promoting resource efficiency and minimizing waste, but it cannot achieve its sustainability goals alone. To achieve a truly sustainable future, broader social, environmental and economic aspects need to be taken into account. Rather than separating biological and technological cycles, as the CE principles are depicted in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s butterfly diagram (EMF, 2017), we propose an integrated approach that prioritises environmental aspects and includes a conceptual framework, socio-economic changes and implementation processes. It is crucial to re-evaluate the environmental aspects and strengthen their importance within the CE framework. Within this concept we present the case of iron, the most widely used metal, widely available compared to others and has been an essential part of societal development for more than 5,000 years. With its abundance, safety and electrochemical properties, iron is an ideal material for low-carbon energy technologies. We discuss how advanced iron-based technologies have a high potential to be successfully integrated into the CE, we evaluate different electrochemical energy storage systems and present advances in thermochemical Fe-Cl cycles for hydrogen production. An innovative thermal system for hydrogen production based on the thermochemical Fe-Cl cycle was evaluated in a life cycle assessment (LCA) study and shows the importance of choosing sustainable energy sources to minimise environmental impact. Sustainable production methods for iron are also analysed to demonstrate their potential to reduce the carbon footprint of the iron and steel industry. Finally, efforts should focus on minimising environmental impact and optimising resource recovery. 16. High doses of polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics affect the microbial community and nutrient status of vineyard soilsErika Jež, Elisa Pellegrini, Melita Sternad Lemut, Maria De Nobili, Marco Contin, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Abstract
The escalating use of plastic materials in viticulture causes release of microplastics (MPs) into vineyard soils. This study examines the impact on soil health of polypropylene (PP) raffia and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube strings, commonly mulched into the topsoil after use. A 120-d incubation experiment was conducted with soils exposed to high doses (10 g/kg) of microplastics (MPs) from standard, new and used strings. The study investigated alterations in the microbial community, bioavailability of macronutrients (NH4+ and NO3−, P, K, Ca, Mg), and bioavailability of micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mg). The presence of MPs significantly stressed the soil microbial community, reducing microbial biomass by 30% after 30 d, with the exception of PVC in acid soil, which caused an unexpected increase of about 60%. The metabolic quotient (qCO2) doubled in MP-polluted soils, with PVC exerting a more pronounced effect than PP. Basal respiration increased by 25% relative to the acid control soil. PVC MPs raised soil pH from 6.2 to 7.2 and firmly reduced the bioavailability of micronutrients, particularly in acidic soils, and led to a 98% reduction in nitrate (NO3−). The availability of NH4+, P, K, Mg decreased by 10% and Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn by 30%. However, Ca availability increased by 30%, despite shifting from the acid-soluble fraction to soil organic matter and crystalline minerals. Calcareous soil was generally more resilient to changes than the acid soil. These findings underscore the urgent need to investigate the long-term effects of MPs from viticulture on soil properties and health.
