5223. Thermal Lens Spectrometry: Still a Technique on the HorizonMingqiang Liu, Mladen Franko, 2016, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: In this article the historical development of thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) is briefly reviewed for introduction. In continuation, the emphasis is on the recent progresses of TLS for measurements in ensembled sample cells and in microfluidic flow injection systems. Novel theories, instrumentations and their applications for high sample throughput environmental, chemical and biomedical analysis, particularly in micro space, are presented. Discussions are given on the limitations of present TLS systems, that open new horizons for future progress of this technique, which has already found place among routine techniques for chemical analysis. In the last part, proposals for the future development of TLS toward advanced applications in new research fields are presented. 5229. The Other in Slovene and Italia Poetry about Trieste in The First Half of the 20th CenturyAna Toroš, prispevek na konferenci brez natisa Opis: The paper sheds light on the Slovene and Italian poetry about Trieste in the historically turbulent times of the first half of the 20th century. A significant role in this poetry is namely dedicated to the Other (Slovenes or Italians) in the Trieste region. The literary representation that emerged from it contributed to processes of stereotyping in connection with regional strategies of creating cultural meaning and impinged on the spheres of cultural, political, and economic practice. These stereotypes initially took the form of humorous teasing, but in the years before and after WWI turned into enduring judgements of value and lead to discriminatory acts and violence, as they were part of the destructive (war) propaganda: Before the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenes were frequently mentioned in the Italian poetry about Trieste, though the references tended to be one-sided since Italian (irredentist) poets, dreaming of the union of Trieste with the Kingdom of Italy, were not interested about the Other in their own right, as a neighbour, but only as an antagonist, uncultured foreigner and threatening barbarian, someone to defeat in order to prevent their dreams of a "Slovenian Trieste" from coming true. In the Italian poetry about Trieste from the interwar period we are faced with the phenomenon of negation or silencing of the Other (Slovenes) – according to the forced Italianization of Slovenes in the fascist era. Effectively, this means that the Slovenes are no more allowed on the literary scene: all the names of the characters living in the Trieste region are strictly Italian, so are the names of villages that originally had a Slovene name. The poems tend to depict the Trieste region as an idyllic place free of any social or national tensions. In the Slovene poetry up until the end of WWI the Other (Italians) mostly appears without any value-laden label attached to it. After WWI the situation changed radically and a firm literary model was established: the good but powerless Slovenians struggling to defeat the Other (Italians), depicted as the cruel, unmoral antagonist, aggressive foreigner. 5230. From polymers to proteins: the effect of side chains and broken symmetry on the formation of secondary structures within a Wang–Landau approach2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: We use a micro-canonical Wang–Landau technique to study the equilibrium properties of a single flexible homopolymer where consecutive monomers are represented by impenetrable hard spherical beads tangential to each other, and non-consecutive monomers interact via a square-well potential. To mimic the characteristics of a protein-like system, the model is then refined in two different directions. Firstly, by allowing partial overlap between consecutive beads, we break the spherical symmetry and thus provide a severe constraint on the possible conformations of the chain. Alternatively, we introduce additional spherical beads at specific positions in the direction normal to the backbone, to represent the steric hindrance of the side chains in real proteins. Finally, we consider also a combination of these two ingredients. In all three systems, we obtain the full phase diagram in the temperature-interaction range plane and find the presence of helicoidal structures at low temperatures in the intermediate range of interactions. The effect of the range of the square-well attraction is highlighted, and shown to play a role similar to that found in simple liquids and polymers. Perspectives in terms of protein folding are finally discussed.
