The role of logistics companies in promoting sustainable transport and reducing carbon emissions in supply chains : diploma thesis

Opis: This thesis examines the role of logistics companies in advancing sustainable transport and reducing carbon emissions in supply chains. The motivation for the research is the significant environmental impact caused by logistics operations, coupled with the increasing demand for sustainable supply chain practices. The problem addressed is the lack of a comprehensive review on sustainable logistics practices, as existing literature focuses largely on isolated case studies rather than providing an overarching analysis of strategies across the sector. The aim of this thesis was to fill this gap by conducting a literature review to gain insights into the key challenges and opportunities in sustainable logistics. This topic is highly relevant given the growing pressure on logistics companies to adopt greener practices, yet there is limited comprehensive literature that synthesizes strategies and solutions available to address these environmental challenges. A systematic literature search was employed, classifying sources into different categories based on their focus on emission reduction strategies, transportation modes, and energy efficiency. The main results demonstrate the effectiveness of strategies such as investing in alternative fuel vehicles, optimizing routes through advanced algorithms, adopting cargo consolidation practices, fostering cross-industry collaboration, and implementing energy-efficient technologies in warehousing. The study concludes that although there are still obstacles to overcome, logistics companies possess considerable opportunities to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining efficiency in their operations. These findings offer valuable insights for companies seeking to enhance their environmental performance and contribute to the ongoing efforts toward sustainable supply chain management.

Opis: As a collaboration among the University of Nova Gorica (Slovenia), University of Craiova (Romania), and University of Udine (Italy), FEAL 2023 represents an interdisciplinary training opportunity for BA, MA and PhD students from linguistics, applied mathematics, psychology, and neuroscience. It addresses research topics in contemporary linguistics through formal, computational, and experimental approaches. In this training opportunity, we will explore some of the most fundamental General Linear Models (GLMs) that have a wide range of applications in various fields. GLMs provide a flexible framework for modeling a variety of data types, including continuous, binary, count, and categorical data, making them an essential tool for any data analyst. During the course, we will briefly cover some GLM models that have applications in diverse fields such as Psychology, Linguistics, Viticulture, Neuroscience, Economics, Biology, and beyond. We will review the basic concepts and tools in GLMs and will discuss how to choose the appropriate model for a given data type and how to interpret the model's output. This course will provide a hands-on learning experience, where you will have the opportunity to apply the concepts you learn to real-world datasets (using SPSS and Excel). We will go as long as time permits to cover as many topics as possible and ensure that you have a good understanding of GLM models and the skills to apply them to your own research projects.

Uncertainty modeling and stability assessment of minimum spanning trees in network design

Opis: The Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) problem in networks focuses on finding efficient routes, with applications in transportation, logistics, telecommunications, and more. However, catastrophes can make these networks uncertain, requiring robust computational models for decision-making. This paper introduces an uncertainty theory-based model to analyze the stability of MSTs in uncertain networks. By incorporating reliability and risk variables, we assess the robustness of uncertain MSTs (UMSTs) and address the challenge of computing link tolerances, which define the range within which network links can vary without compromising MST optimality. This study proposes computational formulations to systematically calculate these tolerances, offering a more efficient alternative to traditional re-optimization methods.

Aromatic characterization of Graševina wines from Slavonia and Podunavlje sub-regions

Opis: This study investigated the chemical aromatic profiles of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including 21 terpenes, 6 norisoprenoids, 6 volatile phenols, 4 C-6 alcohols, and 23 esters, in Graševina wines originating from Slavonia and Podunavlje sub-regions (Croatia). Headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric detection (HS-SPME-GCMS) was used to assess 60 VOCs, and a novel HS-SPME-GCMS method for the determination of terpenes and norisoprenoids was developed and validated. Statistical analysis also found no significant differences between VOCs present in Graševina wines and others wines (Chardonnay and Pinot gris); nonetheless, comparison of VOC fingerprints between different wines from the same producer showed that four terpenes (α-terpinene, γ-terpinene, 1,4-cineol, and 4-terpineol) were present in higher amounts in Graševina wines when compared to other wines. By exclusively examining VOCs within Graševina wines through the utilization of a heatmap and hierarchical clustering, a distinct visualization of samples and VOCs emerged, highlighting the vintage effect. Simultaneously, a partial least squares discriminant analysis model was developed with a confidence interval of 95%, demonstrating a noticeable distinction between samples originating from the western and eastern regions. Furthermore, by employing the heatmap using only VOCs from the terpene and norisoprenoidic groups, a clear separation of samples into two groups was observed based on geographical origin; namely, higher concentrations of norisoprenoids and terpenes were observed in the Slavonia sub-region. These results suggest that terpenes and norisoprenoids to a lower extent may be valuable aromatic markers for the regional typicality of Graševina wines.

An improved low-input resistance folded-cascode transimpedance amplifier for giga-bit per second optical communication front-ends

Opis: The present study is devoted to articulating a modified folded‐cascode circuit, to make folded‐cascode structures an attractive configuration as a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for being employed in Giga‐bit per second optical communication receiver systems. Giga‐bps communication receivers are highly necessitating circuits to isolate the input parasitic capacitance of the photodiode. The present modification makes folded cascodes comparable to the famous regulated cascode (RGC) structures by isolating this parasitic capacitor almost by the same quantity. The system is shown to be capable of operating at 2.5 Gbps up to 8 Gbps data rate with a fixed bandwidth. The paper analyzes and evaluates the designed circuit mathematically, and the obtained simulated results from Cadence using TSMC 65 nm CMOS validate the suitability of the modified circuit as a TIA.
