Surviving sluicing
Franc Marušič, Petra Mišmaš, Vesna Plesničar, Tina Šuligoj, 2018, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss examples of sluicing in Slovenian in which, in addition to a wh-phrase (or wh-phrases in instances of multiple sluicing) discourse particles appear. This is unexpected given Merchant’s (2001) Sluicing-COMP generalization, as already observed in Marušič et al. (2015), even though there are several languages in which similar cases exist, e.g. German. In this paper we focus on discourse particles pa and že in (multiple) wh-questions and sluicing. These examples are not only important for our understanding of sluicing but are also crucial for analyzing discourse particles in Slovenian. Based on examples with sluicing and discourse particles in Slovenian, we argue against positioning these particles within the whphrase, clitic cluster or the IP.

Povezovanje hierarhije pridevnikov v samostalniški zvezi in kognicije

Cinque in Rizzi (2008). V eksperimentih se osredotočamo na univerzalno hierarhijo funkcijskih projekcij, ki ob samostalniškem jedru gostijo pridevnike, konkretno na funkcijske projekcije za pridevnike, ki izražajo koncepte barve, oblike in velikosti. Ti se v samostalniški zvezi običajno pojavijo v zaporedju VELIKOST > OBLIKA > BARVA.

Kakšen, kateri, čigav – vse o pridevnikih
Franc Marušič, Petra Mišmaš, Rok Žaucer, other performed works

Looking for an extralinguistic source of the strict order of adjectives
Petra Mišmaš, Franc Marušič, Rok Žaucer, unpublished conference contribution

Abstract: Assuming the cartographic approach to syntax, adjective ordering, which is argued to be universal (cf. Hetzron 1978, Sproat and Shih 1991, Cinque 1994, Scott 2002 etc.), comes from a universal hierarchy of functional projections that host specific adjectives. We want to explore the source of this order and of the functional hierarchy that dictates it. Cinque and Rizzi (2008) discuss possible origins of the many hierarchies of functional projections and give general cognition as one of the possible answers to the question. If cognition and its restrictions are behind the hierarchy, then the order of projections hosting adjectives should be reflected in various non-linguistic cognitive processes. We prepared several experiments to test this hypothesis.

Raba pridevnikov pri najmlajših govorcih
Tina Dolenc, 2018, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: Predlagano je bilo, da je vrstni red pridevnikov posledica prirojene hierarhije slovničnih projekcij (Cinque 2014), ki gostijo različne pridevniške kategorije. Če teorija drži, usvajanje pridevnikov pri otrocih poteka v nasprotnem vrstnem redu hierarhiji, saj otrok stavčno zgradbo pridobiva od najnižje projekcije k najvišji (Radford 1996). Diplomska naloga predstavlja rezultate primerjave rabe pridevnikov kategorij velikost, barva in oblika v govoru staršev in otrok. Rezultati kažejo, da si v govoru otrok te kategorije sledijo v zaporedju, ki ga je predlagal Scott (2002).

Coordinate structure constraint: a-/a'- movement vs. clitic movement
Franc Marušič, Rok Žaucer, 2017, original scientific article

Abstract: We discuss cases of apparent Coordinate Structure Constraint violations in Slovenian. We show that when two non-finite clauses are coordinated, clitics can front to the second position in the main clause from the first non-finite clause but not from the second, and an accusative argument can scramble to a position in the main clause from the first non-finite clause but not from the second. We argue that the apparent island violations result from post-syntactic movements and are thus not real island violations. Exhibiting typical properties of post-syntactic movements, clitic climbing and scrambling should thus be seen as PF-phenomena.

When linearity prevails over hierarchy in syntax
Franc Marušič, Tina Šuligoj, 2017, original scientific article

Abstract: Hierarchical structure has been cherished as a grammatical universal. We use experimental methods to show where linear order is also a relevant syntactic relation. An identical methodology and design were used across six research sites on South Slavic languages. Experimental results show that in certain configurations, grammatical production can in fact favor linear order over hierarchical structure. However, these findings are limited to coordinate structures and distinct from the kind of production errors found with comparable configurations such as “attraction” errors. The results demonstrate that agreement morphology may be computed in a series of steps, one of which is partly independent from syntactic hierarchy.
