Unwrapping the phase portrait features of adventitious crackle for auscultation and classification: A machine learning approach
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper delves into the plausibility of applying fractal, spectral, and nonlinear time series analyses for lung auscultation. The thirty-five sound signals of bronchial (BB) and pulmonary crackle (PC) analysed by fast Fourier transform and wavelet not only give the details of number, nature, and time of occurrence of the frequency components but also throw light onto the embedded air flow during breathing. Fractal dimension, phase portrait, and sample entropy help in divulging the greater randomness, antipersistent nature, and complexity of airflow dynamics in BB than PC. The potential of principal component analysis through the spectral feature extraction categorises BB, fine crackles, and coarse crackles. The phase portrait feature-based supervised classification proves to be better compared to the unsupervised machine learning technique. The present work elucidates phase portrait features as a better choice of classification, as it takes into consideration the temporal correlation between the data points of the time series signal, and thereby suggesting a novel surrogate method for the diagnosis in pulmonology. The study suggests the possible application of the techniques in the auscultation of coronavirus disease 2019 seriously affecting the respiratory system.

Acclimatisation through thermal diffusivity tuning of coconut oil – A mode mismatched dual-beam thermal lens study
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Ayurvedic medicinal oils traditionally prepared by blending herbal extracts in different compositions are commonly used for treatment and improving health. The estimation of the thermal properties of medicinal oils is essential for practical applications. Objective: The present work aims to expound the ability of medicinal oils for the acclimatization of body temperature by determining its thermal diffusivity and thereby providing a validation to the traditional knowledge. Materials and methods: The medicinal oils are prepared by incorporating black pepper (Piper nigrum), aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), hibiscus bud (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) and Ocimum sanctum in coconut oil base. The samples are subjected to thermal diffusivity study using the mode-mismatched dual-beam thermal lens technique. Results: The study reveals that the incorporation of black pepper (Piper nigrum), having hot potency (Ushna veerya), to the base fluid lowers the thermal diffusivity value, suggesting its potential in heat-trapping. The addition of aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), hibiscus bud (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), and O. sanctum dissipates heat energy quickly, thus increases the thermal diffusivity of coconut oil revealing a cold potency (Sheeta veerya). The study provides a validation for traditional knowledge and delineates the possiblity of thermal diffusivity tuning of the base fluids. Conclusion: The thermal diffusivity tuning through incorporation of herbal extracts can effectively be used to acclimatize the human body temperature with the surroundings. A higher thermal diffusivity value induces a cooling effect and the lower value causes heating effect. This, opens up the possibility of using thermally tuned oils depending on climate and geographical location.

Evolution of fractal dimension in pulsed laser deposited MoO3 film with ablation time and annealing temperature
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The multifractal analysis is a potential method for assessing thin flm surface morphology and its changes due to diferent deposition conditions and post-deposition treatments. In this work, the multifractal analysis is carried out to understand the surface morphology—root mean square (RMS) surface roughness—of nanostructured MoO3 flms prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique by varying the ablation time and post-deposition annealing. The XRD analysis shows the evolution of crystalline nature with annealing temperature. The XRD pattern of all the annealed flms shows the characteristic peak of the orthorhombic MoO3 phase. The FESEM and AFM analysis reveals the morphological modifcation with ablation time and annealing temperature. The multifractal analysis of the AFM images shows that the box—counting, information and correlation dimension varies with the annealing temperature. The study also reveals the inverse relation between the fractal dimension and the RMS surface roughness due to the annealing induced particle size variation and reorientation. The fractal dimension’s evolution in the pulsed laser deposited MoO3 flm with ablation time and annealing temperature is also investigated. Thus, the study reveals the potential of multifractal analysis in the thin flm surface characterizatio

Neural net pattern recognition based auscultation of croup cough and pertussis using phase portrait features
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Cough signal analysis for understanding the pathological condition has become important from the outset of the exigency posed by the epidemic COVID-19. The present work suggests a surrogate approach for the classification of cough signals - croup cough (CC) and pertussis (PT) – based on spectral, fractal, and nonlinear time-series techniques. The spectral analysis of CC reveals the presence of more frequency components in the short duration cough sound compared to PT. The musical nature of CC is unveiled not only through the spectral analysis but also through the phase portrait features – sample entropy (S), maximal Lyapunov exponent (L), and Hurst exponent (Hb). The modifications in the internal morphology of the respiratory tract, giving rise to more frequency components associated with the complex airflow dynamics, get staged through the higher fractal dimension of CC. Among the two supervised classification tools, cubic KNN (CKNN) and neural net pattern recognition (NNPR), used for classifying the CC and PT signals based on nonlinear time series parameters, NNPR is found better. Thus, the study opens the possibility of identification of pulmonary pathological conditions through cough sound signal analysis.

Thermal diffusivity of molybdenum oxide nanowire film: a photothermal beam deflection study
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper reports the preparation of thin film with MoO3 nanowires (NWs) by the doctor blade method and the study of its thermal diffusivity (α) by the sensitive photothermal beam deflection (PTD) method. When the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic and Atomic Force Microscopic analysis unveil its morphology as NW bundles, the X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the structure to be orthorhombic. The NWs formed are of diameter ~ 20 nm and length up to 5 μm. The standardization of the transverse PTD setup is done by determining the value of α of iron, which agrees well with literature reports. The thermal diffusivity of MoO3 NW film is obtained as 0.0036 cm2 /s, which is 9.48% of its bulk counterpart. The reduction in the thermal diffusivity of NW makes it a suitable candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Boron carbide Nanowires from castor oil for optronic applications: A low-temperature greener approach
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The development of one-dimensional nanostructures has revolutionized electronic and photonic industries because of their unique properties. The present paper reports the low-temperature green synthesis of boron carbide nanowires, of diameter 14 nm and length 2 lm, by the condensation method using castor oil as the carbon precursor. The nanowires synthesized exhibit beaded chain morphology, and bandgap energy of 2.08 eV revealed through the Tauc plot analysis. The structure of boron carbide nanowires is revealed by micro-Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The thermogravimetric analysis of the sample reveals the excellent thermal stability. The photoluminescence study reveals the nanowire’s blue light emission capability under ultraviolet excitation, which is substantiated by the CIE plot suggesting its potential in photonic applications.

Phase Portrait for High Fidelity Feature Extraction and Classification: A Surrogate Approach
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper proposes a novel surrogate method of classification of breath sound signals for auscultation through the principal component analysis (PCA), extracting the features of a phase portrait. The nonlinear parameters of the phase portrait like the Lyapunov exponent, the sample entropy, the fractal dimension, and the Hurst exponent help in understanding the degree of complexity arising due to the turbulence of air molecules in the airways of the lungs. Thirty-nine breath sound signals of bronchial breath (BB) and pleural rub (PR) are studied through spectral, fractal, and phase portrait analyses. The fast Fourier transform and wavelet analyses show a lesser number of high-intense, low-frequency components in PR, unlike BB. The fractal dimension and sample entropy values for PR are, respectively, 1.772 and 1.041, while those for BB are 1.801 and 1.331, respectively. This study reveals that the BB signal is more complex and random, as evidenced by the fractal dimension and sample entropy values. The signals are classified by PCA based on the features extracted from the power spectral density (PSD) data and the features of the phase portrait. The PCA based on the features of the phase portrait considers the temporal correlation of the signal amplitudes and that based on the PSD data considers only the signal amplitudes, suggesting that the former method is better than the latter as it reflects the multidimensional aspects of the signal. This appears in the PCA-based classification as 89.6% for BB, a higher variance than the 80.5% for the PR signal, suggesting the higher fidelity of the phase portrait-based classification.

Cost-effective Green Synthesis of Boron rich Carbide Coatings for IR Windows and Night Vision Optics
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The increasing demand for infrared (IR) window materials for various applications in optical imaging systems necessitates the development of cost-effective green techniques. Herein, the synthesis of refractory boron carbide (BC) using castor oil, as carbon precursor, and the preparation of IR transparent films by thermal vapor deposition technique is reported. Films are prepared with 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5 ratios of boric acid and castor oil, respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform IR (FTIR) analyses reveal the structure of films prepared to be BC. The morphology of the films is analyzed by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique, and its dependence on precursor’s ratio is also studied. The spectroscopic characterization by the ultraviolet–visible–near IR (UV–vis–NIR) transmittance study reveals the potential of the films for IR window applications. The bandgap energy of the BC films determined from the Tauc plot yields a value of 2.33 eV. The absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, refractive index, dissipation factor, and optical conductivity are also studied from the reflectance and transmittance data.

Time series analysis of duty cycle induced randomness in thermal lens system
Swapna Mohanachandran Nair Sindhu, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The present work employs time series analysis, a proven powerful mathematical tool, for investigating the complex molecular dynamics of the thermal lens (TL) system induced by the duty cycle (C) variation. For intensity modulation, TL spectroscopy commonly uses optical choppers. The TL formation involves complex molecular dynamics that vary with the input photothermal energy, which is implemented by varying the duty cycle of the chopper. The molecular dynamics is studied from the fractal dimension (D), phase portrait, sample entropy (S), and Hurst exponent (H) for different duty cycles. The increasing value of C is found to increase D and S, indicating that the system is becoming complex and less deterministic, as evidenced by the phase portrait analysis. The value of H less than 0.5 conforms the evolution of the TL system to more anti-persistent nature with C. The increasing value of C increases the enthalpy of the system that appears as an increase in full width at half maximum of the refractive index profile. Thus the study establishes that the sample entropy and thermodynamic entropy are directly related.
