6. The peppermint breath test: a benchmarking protocol for breath sampling and analysis using GC-MSMaxim Wilkinson, Iain R. White, Katie Hamshere, Olaf Holz, Sven Schuchardt, Francesca G. Bellagambi, Tommaso Lomonaco, Denise Biagini, Laura Di Francesco, Stephen J. Fowler, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Exhaled breath contains hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which offers the potential for diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of diseases. As the breath research field has grown, sampling and analytical practices have become highly varied between groups. Standardisation would allow meta-analyses of data from multiple studies and greater confidence in published results. The Peppermint Consortium has been formed to address this task of standardisation. In the current study we aimed to generate initial benchmark values for thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) analysis of breath samples containing peppermint-derived VOCs. Headspace analysis of peppermint oil capsules was performed to determine compounds of interest. Ten healthy participants were recruited by three groups. Each participant provided a baseline breath sample prior to taking a peppermint capsule, with further samples collected at 60, 90, 165, 285 and 360 min following ingestion. Sampling and analytical protocols were different for each institution, in line with their usual practice. Samples were analysed by TD-GC-MS and benchmarking values determined for the time taken for detected peppermint VOCs to return to baseline values. Sixteen compounds were identified in the capsule headspace. Additionally, 2,3-dehydro-1,8-cineole was uniquely found in the breath samples, with a washout profile that suggested it was a product of peppermint metabolism. Five compounds (α-pinene, β-pinene, eucalyptol, menthol and menthone) were quantified by all three groups. Differences in recovery were observed between the groups, particularly for menthone and menthol. The average time taken for VOCs to return to baseline was selected as the benchmark and were 441, 648, 1736, 643 and 375 min for α-pinene, β-pinene, eucalyptol, menthone and menthol respectively. An initial set of easy-to-measure benchmarking values for assessing the performance of TD-GC-MS systems for the analysis of VOCs in breath is presented. These values will be updated when more groups provide additional data. 8. On the GeV Emission of the Type I BdHN GRB 130427ARemo Ruffini, Rahim Moradi, Jorge Armando Rueda, Carlo Luciano Bianco, Christian Cherubini, Simonetta Filippi, Yen-Chen Chen, Mile Karlica, Narek Sahakyan, Yu Wang, She Sheng Xue, Laura Beccera, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: We propose that the inner engine of a type I binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) is composed of Kerr black hole (BH) in a non-stationary state, embedded in a uniform magnetic field B_0 aligned with the BH rotation axis and surrounded by an ionized plasma of extremely low density of 10^−14 g cm−3. Using GRB 130427A as a prototype, we show that this inner engine acts in a sequence of elementary impulses. Electrons accelerate to ultrarelativistic energy near the BH horizon, propagating along the polar axis, θ = 0, where they can reach energies of ~10^18 eV, partially contributing to ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. When propagating with $\theta \ne 0$ through the magnetic field B_0, they produce GeV and TeV radiation through synchroton emission. The mass of BH, M = 2.31M ⊙, its spin, α = 0.47, and the value of magnetic field B_0 = 3.48 × 10^10 G, are determined self consistently to fulfill the energetic and the transparency requirement. The repetition time of each elementary impulse of energy ${ \mathcal E }\sim {10}^{37}$ erg is ~10^−14 s at the beginning of the process, then slowly increases with time evolution. In principle, this "inner engine" can operate in a gamma-ray burst (GRB) for thousands of years. By scaling the BH mass and the magnetic field, the same inner engine can describe active galactic nuclei. 9. Impact of high or low levels of phosphorus and high sodium in soils on productivity and stress tolerance of Arundo donax plantsClaudia Cocozza, Federico Brilli, Laura Miozzi, Sara Pignattelli, Silvia Rotunno, Cecilia Brunetti, Cristiana Giordano, Susanna Pollastri, Mauro Centritto, Gian Paolo Accotto, Roberto Tognetti, Francesco Loreto, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The potential of Arundo donax to grow in degraded soils, characterized by excess of salinity (Na+), and phosphorus
deficiency (-P) or excess (+P) also coupled with salinity (+NaP), was investigated by combining in vivo
plant phenotyping, quantification of metabolites and ultrastructural imaging of leaves with a transcriptome-wide
screening. Photosynthesis and growth were impaired by+Na, -P and+NaP. While+Na caused stomatal
closure, enhanced biosynthesis of carotenoids, sucrose and isoprene and impaired anatomy of cell walls, +P
negatively affected starch production and isoprene emission, and damaged chloroplasts. Finally, +NaP largely
inhibited photosynthesis due to stomatal limitations, increased sugar content, induced/repressed a number of
genes 10 time higher with respect to+P and+Na, and caused appearance of numerous and large plastoglobules
and starch granules in chloroplasts. Our results show that A. donax is sensitive to unbalances of soil ion
content, despite activation of defensive mechanisms that enhance plant resilience, growth and biomass production
of A. donax under these conditions. Ključne besede: Abiotic stress
