Bosnia and Herzegovina, the influence of the Gulf states on economics and politics
Giustina Selvelli, 2017, treatise, preliminary study, study

Abstract: The growing presence of wealthy investors and tourists from Gulf States in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the 2010s has become a quite discussed topic in the Balkan country, catalyzing the attention of many articles in local and international i media over the last couple of years. The arrival of Gulf Arab visitors is encouraged by favorable conditions such as the lift of most visa requirements, the establishment of several direct flights with Sarajevo airport, as well as long-term investment perspectives.

The cultural collaboration between Jacob Grimm and Vuk Karadžić : A fruitful friendship connecting Western Europe to the Balkans
Giustina Selvelli, 2014, other component parts

Abstract: The following article aims at presenting a significant case of intercultural relations between Germany and Serbia that took place during the first half of the 19th Century thanks to the epistolary correspondence between Jacob Grimm and Vuk Karadžić. The German scholar started exploring Serbian language and culture in order to reach a better knowledge of the folk songs Vuk Karadžić was collecting at the time. These songs constituted for Jacob Grimm an essential term of comparison which allowed him to give more concreteness to his theories and researches about “natural language” and encouraged him to explore the field of Indo-European comparative philology. On the other side, Jacob Grimm's support helped Vuk Karadžić in his struggle for the codification of a written language in his country, on the basis of the popular one. The role played by Grimm, together with Goethe, in the diffusion and appreciation of Serbian folk songs is inestimable: thanks to him Western Europe got to know the culture of a part of the continent, towards which prejudices and ignorance were still prevailing. The idea of reciprocal approaching of cultures was also inscribed in Goethe's conception of Weltliteratur, which considered translation as a fundamental part of German culture and the condition for its further growth since Luther's translation of the Bible.

LA FRATELLANZA ARMENO-BULGARA: UNA QUESTIONE DI MERA RETORICA?
Giustina Selvelli, 2011, original scientific article

Giustina Selvelli, 2011, original scientific article

ALPHABET AND WRITING IN THE ARMENIAN DIASPORA OF PLOVDIV: ANTHROPOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVES
Giustina Selvelli, 2015, original scientific article

Abstract: This work investigates the relation between the maintenance of Armenian identity and language and the multifunctional employment of the Armenian writing system in the diasporic context of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Departing from the assumption that a writing system’s cultural meaning goes far beyond its technical function, the aim is to demonstrate how the Armenian alphabet becomes a fundamental component of a process of symbolic cultivation of collective imagery, employed by the local intelligentsia in different writing settings in order to keep the link with the cultural and spiritual legacy of the historic Armenian motherland alive. In this vision, I integrate the analysis of ethnic identity with the study of the representational factors that allow a group to exist in the symbolic horizon of its members, with the purpose of underlining the symbolic aspect of ethnicity and identifying the mechanisms active in its persistence in time as a historic and cultural construction.

SU ALCUNI ASPETTI IDEOLOGICI DEI SISTEMI DI TRASLITTERAZIONE DEGLI ALFABETI CIRILLICI NEI BALCANI
Giustina Selvelli, 2015, original scientific article

SISTEMI DI SCRITTURA, CONFINI E IDENTITÀ NAZIONALI : Uno sguardo su alcune ideologie alfabetiche in ex-Jugoslavia
Giustina Selvelli, 2015, published scientific conference contribution

Giustina Selvelli, 2015, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

IDENTITY AND MULTIPLICITY IN CANETTI'S AND WAGENSTEIN'S BIRTHPLACES : EXPLORING THE RHIZOMATIC ROOTS OF EUROPE
Giustina Selvelli, 2017, original scientific article

Abstract: The aim of this article is to present some commonalities between the works of two writers who share the same Bulgarian and Jewish origin: Elias Canetti (1905–1994) and Angel Wagenstein (1922–). Both writers can be considered as highly multicultural personalities: they both came from Sephardic Jewish backgrounds, and were influenced and fascinated by different cultural worlds such as the Bulgarian one, the Jewish one, the Central- European one, and even more. This paper will explore the contribution of their birthplaces, respectively, Rustschuk (today, Ruse) and Plovdiv, to the development of what I will define as a particular kind of sensibility for multiplicity which was central to their subsequent cultural and social undertakings.
