Outreach, education, and communication initiatives at the Pierre Auger Observatory
V. Scherini, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2024, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has a long tradition of outreach that engages a wide range of people of all ages worldwide. In Malargüe, Argentina, the heart of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the Visitor Center offers a permanent interactive exhibition. Every November Collaboration meeting, we organize a Science Fair where Argentinian students from across the country can present their works and talk with the scientists at the site, motivating youngsters to pursue a career in Science. We also participate in the local parade, commemorating the foundation of Malargüe. We have developed numerous activities and interactive tools, including a 3-D event display. We have an open data policy and share them according to FAIR principles. Recently, we joined the International Masterclasses within the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, using a framework similar to the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. In this contribution, we summarize all of our Outreach activities.

Decolonizing literary studies : unveiling postcolonial narratives in post-Yugoslav academic curricula
Sara Vukotić, Darko Ilin, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper explores the presence and integration of postcolonial studies in literature education within the faculties of philology in the capitals of the former Yugoslav countries. Focusing on the emerging field of critical curriculum studies, the research delves into the nuanced landscape of literature education, particularly at higher levels, specifically emphasizing literary students’ specialized education. The study contextualizes postcolonial studies as a hybrid space for theoretical discourse, tracing its roots to anticolonial critique and contemporary Western theories. Drawing on the anticolonial heritage of socialist Yugoslavia and its involvement in the Non-Aligned Movement, the paper navigates the complexities of (post)colonial dynamics in the Balkans. This paper investigates the presence, or absence, of postcolonial theory in literature curricula within humanities faculties in the former Yugoslav countries’ capital cities. This research is based on the close interconnection of literature and postcolonial theory, whose origins lie within the literary representation of colonization relations. The primary objective is to discern the extent to which postcolonial studies are integrated into literary education and what implications this holds within the national context. Through an examination of course programs and content at various academic levels, the research aims to illuminate the role of postcolonial theory in shaping the narrative of literature education in the context of the former Yugoslavia.

Advances on the Pierre Auger outreach and education program
Gabriella Cataldi, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2023, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: The Pierre Auger Observatory has implemented a novel method of astroparticle detection that combines various techniques and has an open data policy. The dissemination of information about the different astroparticle detection methods, ranging from surface water-Cherenkov detectors to underground scintillator detectors, is now possible due to access to specialized tools for data analysis. This allows for the introduction of the topic of astroparticles to teachers and students at different educational levels. This marks a significant moment for the Observatory. In this work, we will discuss the diverse outreach initiatives undertaken by the Observatory, which have facilitated interaction among members of the international collaboration and enabled collaborative actions between the permanent staff of the Observatory in Malargüe and other institutions worldwide through synchronous meetings. These programs provide visitors with the opportunity to explore the environment of secondary particle cascades produced by cosmic rays, leading to a record number of monthly visitors since the opening of the Observatory 25 years ago.

Biodiversity communication through art in the form of digital games and the communication potential of related online communities : diploma thesis
Tijana Mijušković, 2023, diplomsko delo

Opis: Biodiversity communication is becoming increasingly important in today’s age, as climate change and other factors contribute to the rapid decline of species and ecosystems across the globe. Art is growing in popularity as a tool of reaching people regarding environmental causes, as they convey the emotional, human side of this endeavor in a way that typical science communication isn’t able to. Digital games, arguably among the most persuasive art forms and now widely accessible, are well suited to educating as well as emotionally influencing their players. Online communities frequently form around games, providing a platform for discussion and potentially increasing the games’ total potential for biodiversity communication. In this thesis, the content of eight games from Steam’s list of top-rated games tagged with ‘Nature’ was analyzed, and seven online communities related to these games on the Discord and Reddit social media platforms were surveyed. There was found to be a number of different approaches among the eight games towards educating players about biodiversity and/or its conservation, and the survey of communities showed care towards and interest in biodiversity-related discussion and conservation gaming itself, as well as the fact that games and related discussion in online communities has potential to educate players and positively influence their interest in biodiversity topics. Online game-related communities may offer an additional avenue of approaching game players about biodiversity for science communicators, researchers, and game developers alike.

STRENGTHENING ENERGY AND CLIMATE LITERACY WITH MICROLEARNING AND OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
Mojca Drevenšek, 2023, magistrsko delo

Opis: This master’s thesis is motivated by the desire to actively engage Slovenian youth in co-creating our energy and climate future. The background is the growing interest in effective energy transition at the national, EU and global levels, and we specifically focus on the role of education in achieving this goal. The main problem we address is the need for improvement of energy- and climate-related non-formal youth education to increase their interest in the topic, and motivate their engagement in public discussions and the policy-making processes. To tackle this problem, we use the existing En-ROADS energy and climate interactive simulation tool and the accompanying online training series and complement it with new learning materials and learning activities, developed in our educational project. Our approach focuses on open education practices and the co-creation of open educational resources (OER), supported by microlearning via social media (Instagram). We develop a novel approach to address the problem by involving youth in a non-formal open educational process where they are invited to co-create the content and format of learning materials, decide on the technologies used, and affect the implementational process of the key learning activities. The main contributions of the thesis are the developed OERs, which can be adapted, reused or remixed by other stakeholders in the field of energy and climate education, and the recommendations for educators both in the field of energy and climate topics as well as in other fields, related to education for sustainable development. The main methodological finding of the thesis focuses on the importance of flexibility and adaptation of learning materials and activities according to the expressed interests and expectations of young learners. Their feedback needs to be carefully gathered and integrated into the implementation of the project.
