English many, namely "veliko" and "precej", whose meaning appears close to identical. Yet speakers are
certain that the two items are not equivalent, although they find intuitively felt differences hard to pinpoint.
We argue that "precej" and "veliko" are lexically synonymous, but their meanings are pragmatically
strengthened under relevant conditions, which leads to subtle interpretative differences. Specifically, we
extend Krifka’s (2007) analysis of double negatives and propose that "veliko" is assigned the stereotypical
interpretation of a quantity degree word, whereas "precej" is identified with the non-stereotypical one and
consequently relates to moderately big amounts. To support this claim, we report the results of an experiment
involving a sentence-picture verification task, which highlight the similarities and contextually determined
differences in the use of both determiners. Our results suggest that the interpretation of "precej" is not consistent with relations in the upper part of the proportional scale and is dependent on whether or not it is in direct competition with "veliko" in the appropriate contexts. First, building on previous work, we investigate how
robustly Slovenian observes the syntactic locality constraint precluding constituent sub-extraction out of subject noun phrases. Second, we ask whether Slovenian allows Left Branch Extraction in interrogative and non-interrogative sentences. To elucidate both issues, we conducted a magnitude estimation study, the results of which support our previous claim that there is a subject island effect in Slovenian. Furthermore,
our results suggest that Slovenian disallows Left Branch Extraction, in contrast with some other Slavic languages. We also discuss theoretical consequences of our empirical findings. The left periphery of multiple wh-questions in SlovenianPetra Mišmaš, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: In this paper I focus on multiple wh-questions in Slovenian and argue for an analysis in which wh-phrases move to the extended left periphery of the sentence. Assuming the Cartographic approach, I consider the order of wh-phrases in Slovenian multiple wh-questions, which was previously described as free, e.g. Golden (1997). While I confirm that the order of wh-phrases in the left periphery is generally free, I show that there are some exceptions, e.g. zakaj ‘why’ and kako ‘how’ tend to precede other wh-phrases. In addition, I show that the order of wh-phrases with respect to focus and topic phrases is free, but that one wh-phrase needs to appear in a clause initial position for a question to get a true wh-question reading. Based on this, I propose that the clause initial wh-phrase moves to the Interrogative Projection, in the sense of Rizzi (2001a), and the remaining wh-phrases to Wh-Projections. Crucially, because wh-movement is not restricted by a requirement on chains, cf. Krapova & Cinque (2005), the order of wh-phrases is free. 77. The Modal Cycle vs. Negation in SlovenianFranc Marušič, Rok Žaucer, 2016, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: One of the possible ways of expressing possibility in affirmative
sentences in Slovenian is with a modal adverb that combines with a finite verb. Under negation, a modal auxiliary must be used instead of the modal adverb. The pattern with a modal adverb that combines with a finite verb is a peculiarity among other Slavic languages as well as European languages more generally (Hansen 2005, Olmen & Auwera, in press). Looking at diachronic data, which reveal an earlier stage without the modal adverb as well as a subsequent stage with cooccurrence of the modal adverb and the modal auxiliary, we propose that the change be analyzed in terms of the linguistic cycle (van Gelderen 2011), with the modal adverb originating as a reinforcer of the modal auxiliary and then grammaticalizing into a modal. The modal-adverb strategy could not generalize to contexts with sentential negation because of the hierarchical order of the relevant functional projections and the characteristics of the negative particle. Formal Studies in Slovenian Syntax : In honor of Janez Orešnik2016, znanstvena monografija Opis: Although in the early days of generative linguistics Slovenian was rarely called on in the development of theoretical models, the attention it gets has subsequently grown, so that by now it has contributed to generative linguistics a fair share of theoretically important data. With 13 chapters that all build on Slovenian data, this book sets a new milestone. The topics discussed in the volume range from Slovenian clitics, which are called on to shed new light on the intriguing Person-Case Constraint and to provide part of the evidence for a new generalization relating the presence of the definite article and Wackernagel clitics, to functional elements such as the future auxiliary and possibility modals, the latter of which are discussed also from the perspective of language change. Even within the relatively well-researched topics like wh-movement, new findings are presented, both in relation to the structure of the left periphery and to the syntax of relative clauses. called on in the development of theoretical models, the attention it gets has
subsequently grown, so that by now it has contributed to generative
linguistics a fair share of theoretically important data. Some of the topics
where Slovenian data played a prominent role include the feel-like
construction, imperative embedding, closest conjunct agreement
phenomena, double applicatives, etc. In this Introduction, we outline some
of these topics to demonstrate how Slovenian has been brought to bear on
issues in generative syntax, and then briefly introduce individual chapters,
some of which touch on the above-mentioned topics and some of which
address new topics where Slovenian data prove relevant for the study of a
particular linguistic phenomenon, such as relativization, modality, and

The Problem of the Representation of Women Authors in Slovenian Secondary School Literature TextbooksZoran Božič, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper is based on empirical research on the share of women authors in Slovenian secondary school literature textbooks between 1850 and 2000. The highest share (about 15%) of women
authors was achieved after the Second World War and in contemporary textbooks. However, this share occurred in only one of three competing books, one which offers a considerably larger
selection of authors than that required by the curriculum. The research showed that the share of
women authors depends on the scope of the approach: the fewer authors that are included, the smaller is the likelihood of women authors being represented. With a very strict selection of
nationally representative authors, the female gender is not represented at all. The gender of the selector(s) may influence the inclusion of women authors, but not necessarily: a textbookʼs editor may be a woman, yet still fail to include a single woman author. A comparison between textbooks and literary-historical selections shows that women authors in textbooks are less represented (due to limitations of the scope as determined by the included literary texts), and the selection criteria may also differ.
