1. On complex adjectival phrases in Standard ArabicYahya Aldholmi, Hamid Ouali, Tue Trinh, 2019, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: Natural language differs from artificial ones in having the “displacement property,” allowing expressions to “move” from one position to another in the sentence. The mapping from syntax to phonology, therefore, must include rules specifying how objects created by movement are pronounced, or in technical jargon, how chains are linearized. One of these rules is Copy Deletion. The present study investigates the structural description of Copy Deletion. Specifically, it proposes a phrase geometric constraint on its application. The proposal is corroborated by empirical arguments based on distributional and interpretational facts concerning predicate clefts, NP-Splits, and head ordering patterns. The data are drawn from languages of different types and families including Chinese, English, Dutch, German, Hebrew, Norwegian, Swedish, and Vietnamese. The book, thus, contributes to our understanding of a crucial property of natural language and should be of relevance to readers who are interested in the cross-linguistic approach to Universal Grammar research. 2. Agreement switch in verb-echo answers : evidence for distributed ellipsisGesoel Mendes, Marta Ruda, Jana Willer-Gold, Boban Arsenijević, Bojana Ristić, Nermina Čordalija, Nedžad Leko, Frane Malenica, Franc Marušič, Petra Mišmaš, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this article, we claim that syntactic objects undergoing ellipsis can be targeted by both narrow syntactic and PF operations. We base this conclusion on experimental evidence from the interaction between single conjunct agreement and verb-echo answers in South Slavic, which we show to be derived via verb-stranding VP ellipsis. Adopting the view that Vocabulary Insertion replaces Q-variables on lexical heads (Halle 1991) and ellipsis is a syntactic operation which deletes Q-variables (Saab 2022), we demonstrate that constituents properly included in the ellipsis site can undergo Internal Merge in the narrow syntax, and can participate in PF processes from the derived position. The interaction between ellipsis, Internal Merge and Agree-Copy that accounts for these patterns of data follows naturally within the Distributed Ellipsis approach. 5. Investigation of Slovenian copular agreementFranc Marušič, Rok Žaucer, 2021, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Opis: This paper reports on a detailed investigation of agreement inside simple predicative sentences. In this type of sentence, both noun phrases are in the nominative, so in principle
either one can trigger agreement on the copular verb. We examine various types of copular
contructions and show that regardless of the type of predicative sentence, when a plural
is combined with a singular, it is always the plural that agrees. Similarly, when a dual is
combined with a singular, the dual wins out. But when we combine a dual and a plural, the
copula can agree with either of the two noun phrases, with a preference for the noun phrase
following the copula. We discuss the relevance of these findings for recent literature on
predication. Ključne besede: agreement, copula, number, singular, dual, plural, Slovenian Objavljeno v RUNG: 31.01.2022; Ogledov: 2595; Prenosov: 0 Gradivo ima več datotek! Več... |
6. Experimental syntax and Slavic languagesArthur Stepanov, 2021, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: The chapter reviews a number of empirical domains that recently came into the focus of research in Slavic experimental syntax, including island phenomena, syntactic Superiority effects, various types of agreement, word order, and scope interaction, among others. This research mostly relies on sentence acceptability experiments applied across larger pools of participants, but the chapter also reviews selected studies using related experimental methods (e.g. elicited production and sentence–picture verification). The chapter concludes by identifying a number of conceptual issues in syntactic theory, for which we believe Slavic experimental syntax has a potential to make a particularly strong contribution. 7. Gender agreement with exclusive disjunction in SlovenianFranc Marušič, Zheng Shen, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper addresses two issues: 1. Empirically, we report novel experimental data on agreement with exclusively disjoined subjects in Slovenian; 2. Theoretically, we look into the nature of attested agreement strategies with coordinated NPs. In particular, we investigate how these strategies behave under coordinators with different semantics, i.e. exclusive disjunction and conjunction. Based on the elicitation results, we argue that closest conjunct agreement, resolved agreement, and highest conjunct agreement are all present under exclusive disjunction to different extents, which suggests a uniform set of agreement strategies under disjunction and conjunction despite the semantic difference. Further, we argue against the presence of default agreement under both disjunction and conjunction in Slovenian, and argue for a particular set of gender resolution rules.
