Problem prvega branja Krsta pri Savici : (empirična raziskava)
Zoran Božič, 2008, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: Reading classic poetry, and Prešeren's poetry in particular, seems to be something special, a fact already pointed out in Boža KrakarVogel's researches. Such demanding texts can be made more comprehensible to a contemporary young reader by being modernized, commented on, prosified, and simplified. I did empirical research with the first year classes at Splošna gimnazija Tolmin high school (high school students of each class were asked to read the first twelve octaves of Krst (the Baptism) in three versions –the poetry only, the prose only and the poetry parallel to the prose- the reading was immediately followed by a questionnaire including three reading comprehension tasks). According to the convincing research results, reading Krst pri Savici (The Baptism on the Savica)on one's own proved to be an extremely hard task for an average-motivated high school student, but the referential meanings can be significantly improved if, while reading, students can have a prose version for each stanza at their disposal.

Outlier based literature exploration for cross-domain linking of Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
Donatella Gubiani, Elsa Fabbretti, Bojan Cestnik, Nada Lavrač, Tanja Urbančič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In knowledge discovery, experts frequently need to combine knowledge from different domains to get new insights and derive new conclusions. Intelligent systems should support the experts in the search for relationships between concepts from different domains, where huge amounts of possible combinations require the systems to be efficient but also sufficiently general, open and interactive to enable the experts to creatively guide the discovery process. The paper proposes a cross-domain literature mining methodology that achieves this functionality by combining the functionality of two complementary text mining tools: clustering and topic ontology creation tool OntoGen and cross-domain bridging terms exploration tool CrossBee. Focusing on outlier documents identified by OntoGen contributes to the efficiency, while CrossBee allows for flexible and user-friendly bridging concepts exploration and identification. The proposed approach, which is domain independent and can support cross-domain knowledge discovery in any field of science, is illustrated on a biomedical case study dealing with Alzheimer’s dis- ease, one of the most threatening age-related diseases, deteriorating lives of numerous individuals and challenging the ageing society as a whole. By applying the proposed methodology to Alzheimer’s disease and gut microbiota PubMed articles, we have identified Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) as a potentially valuable link between these two domains. The results support the hypothesis of neuroinflammatory nature of Alzheimer’s disease, and is indicative for the quest for identifying strategies to control nitric oxide- associated pathways in the periphery and in the brain. By addressing common mediators of inflammation using literature-based discovery, we have succeeded to uncover previously unidentified molecular links between Alzheimer’s disease and gut microbiota with a multi-target therapeutic potential.

Visualization of the WomenWriters Database: Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experiments 2012 – 2015
Aleš Vaupotič, Narvika Bovcon, 2017, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: In the exploration of visualization methods in the WomenWriters database and consequently, the creating of interactive diagrams and other graphical interfaces that are presented here, the Research Centre for Humanities and the School of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica collaborated with the University of Ljubljana. The visualization prototypes were realized by the students at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, as part of Introduction to Design and Graphic Design courses, supervised by Narvika Bovcon, PhD, assistants Jure Demšar and Tadej Zupančič. The work spanned from 2012 to 2016. More then three hundred students were involved in the process. In the end, the most interesting visualizations were selected from the results and are presented in this article.

The Learning Chain of Excerpts Didactic Model : The Example of the Novella “Tantadruj” by Ciril Kosmač
Zoran Božič, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper presents a case study of the interpretation of a medium-length narrative text in pre-college settings based on a learning chain of excerpts model supplemented with questions for close reading. This didactic approach had already become widespread in Slovenia prior to WW II, and achieved a more systematic realization with the publication of two workbooks for home reading: Zlati poljub (The golden kiss; Božič 1998) and Poljub zlata (The kiss of gold; Božič 1998) in 1998. After almost two decades of its application in schools, it is time for a more detailed assessment of the approach and its usefulness, which has been carried out by also comparing two learning chains that were created for the well-known novella “Tantadruj” by Kosmač. The paper concludes with a learning chain that connects Tantadruj’s search for happiness with the narrator’s search for creative inspiration.
