Winning combination of Cu and Fe oxide clusters with an alumina support for low-temperature catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds

Abstract: A γ-alumina support functionalized with transition metals is one of the most widely used industrial catalysts for the total oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as air pollutants at higher temperatures (280−450 °C). By rational design of a bimetal CuFe-γ-alumina catalyst, synthesized from a dawsonite alumina precursor, the activity in total oxidation of toluene as a model VOC at a lower temperature (200−380 °C) is achieved. A fundamental understanding of the catalyst and the reaction mechanism is elucidated by advanced microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations as well as by temperature-programmed surface techniques. The nature of the metal−support bonding and the optimal abundance between Cu−O−Al and Fe−O−Al species in the catalysts leads to synergistic catalytic activity promoted by small amounts of iron (Fe/Al = 0.005). The change in the metal oxide−cluster alumina interface is related to the nature of the surfaces to which the Cu atoms attach. In the most active catalyst, the CuO6 octahedra are attached to 4 Al atoms, while in the less active catalyst, they are attached to only 3 Al atoms. The oxidation of toluene occurs via the Langmuir−Hinshelwood mechanism. The presented material introduces a prospective family of low-cost and scalable oxidation catalysts with superior efficiency at lower temperatures.

SUSTAINABLE ASSESSMENT OF ENERGY RECOVERY FROM ORGANIC WASTE WITH A FOCUS ON WASTE FROM OLIVE OIL PRODUCTION

Abstract: The need for a Circular Economy became more than obvious, and in line with that, technologies for utilization of renewables and waste-to-energy transformation have become of utmost importance in climate change mitigation. This master thesis deals with treating the waste after olive oil extraction and using anaerobic digestion to turn the waste into a biogas that later can be used for electricity and heat production. Since there are two options for location, it was necessary to use decision support models to remove subjectivity and bias from the decision-making process. After the decision was made, there was an economic analysis of a biogas plant project that later can be used for establishing a new company in Italy. According to the economic indicators, with a profit of 5.243.000 EUR after ten years and an investment return of less than five years, a biogas plant in Italy is a profitable investment. From the aspect of Circular Economy, the biogas plant successfully fits the concept. It has added value to the local community by turning one process by-product into primary material for another process, creating jobs and generating revenue for the municipal budget while preserving natural resources.

UNI-SOFT IDEALS IN CORESIDUATED LATTICES

Abstract: The notion of the uni-soft idea is introduced, and related properties are investigated. Characterizations of the uni-soft ideal are discussed. The transfer of uni-soft ideal is considered, and relations between the uni-soft ideal and its transfer are investigated. Given a soft set, conditions for the transfer of soft set to be a uni-soft ideal.

Abstract: The notion of a left (resp., right) NI-ideal is introduced, and related properties are investigated. Characterizations of a left (resp., right) NI-ideal are considered. Translations of a left (resp., right) NI-ideal are studied. We show that the homomorphic image (preimage) of a left (resp., right) NI-ideal is a left (resp., right) NI-ideal. The notion of retrenched left (resp., right) NI-ideals is introduced, and their properties are investigated.
