Stress and morphology in the Italian verbs
Elena Guerzoni, 2024, druge monografije in druga zaključena dela

Opis: In this paper I present an analysis of stress in Italian verbs. A preliminary observation reveals that inflection affects stress position on verbs in an apparently unpredictable fashion. Although, at first sight, the variability of stress placement in Italian verbs seems to preclude a systematic account, this paper shows that once the morphological complexity of verbs is factored in, it is in fact the one and the same algorithm that assigns stress in this entire word class.

Agreement switch in verb-echo answers : evidence for distributed ellipsis
Gesoel Mendes, Marta Ruda, Jana Willer-Gold, Boban Arsenijević, Bojana Ristić, Nermina Čordalija, Nedžad Leko, Frane Malenica, Franc Marušič, Petra Mišmaš, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this article, we claim that syntactic objects undergoing ellipsis can be targeted by both narrow syntactic and PF operations. We base this conclusion on experimental evidence from the interaction between single conjunct agreement and verb-echo answers in South Slavic, which we show to be derived via verb-stranding VP ellipsis. Adopting the view that Vocabulary Insertion replaces Q-variables on lexical heads (Halle 1991) and ellipsis is a syntactic operation which deletes Q-variables (Saab 2022), we demonstrate that constituents properly included in the ellipsis site can undergo Internal Merge in the narrow syntax, and can participate in PF processes from the derived position. The interaction between ellipsis, Internal Merge and Agree-Copy that accounts for these patterns of data follows naturally within the Distributed Ellipsis approach.

Stress and morphology in the Italian verb system
Elena Guerzoni, 2000, druge monografije in druga zaključena dela

Opis: In this paper I present an analysis of stress in Italian verbs. A preliminary comparison between nouns and adjectives on the one hand and verbs on the other reveals that these the two classes of words differ in an interesting way when it comes to stress assignment: while on a noun or adjective stress can be predicted to a large extent on the basis of a stress rule that fully coincides with the main stress rule of Classical Latin, inflection affects stress position on verbs in an apparently unpredictable fashion. Although, at first sight, this difference seems to preclude a unified account of stress in the language, this paper shows that once the additional morphological complexity of verbs is factored in, it is in fact the same algorithm that assigns stress in both word classes.

Developmental aspects of Maximize Presupposition : a view from Slovenian
Penka Stateva, 2021, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci (vabljeno predavanje)

Opis: In this talk I present the results of an experimental study of young children's acquisition and use of the principle Maximize Presupposition (MP) in the context of the propositional attitude predicates (equivalent to) know and think. MP operates in the domain of pragmatics in order to distinguish among semantically equivalent propositions which have different presuppositional load in a given context (Heim 1991, Sauerland 2008). Given its nature, demonstrating a speaker’s sensitivity to MP is contingent on knowledge about presuppositional content within a relevant set of alternatives. We use a felicity judgement task to test the ability of 5- and 7-year-old Slovenian-speaking children to derive the factive presupposition of know and the pragmatic inference trigerred by think in accord with MP. The older group of children outperformed the younger group in both conditions manifesting a ceiling performance, while the younger group showed a more mixed pattern. Our results suggest that the anti-factivity inference is mastered on a par with the ability to derive the presupposition of factivity, as predicted by contemporary pragmatic theories. The discussion will also include questions about the influence of bilingualism on developing pragmatic abilities, negative transfer in the domain of pragmatics and its dependence on cross-linguistic morpho-syntactic variation among translational equivalents.

Can agreement with the linearly closest conjunct be derived in syntax proper?
Franc Marušič, Jana Willer Gold, Boban Arsenijević, Andrew Nevins, 2015, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: The recent literature on South Slavic conjunct agreement can be roughly divided into two camps: those trying to model the cases of agreement with linearly closest conjunct, as in the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) example in (1) (taken from Bošković 2009), within syntax (Bošković 2009, Puškar & Murphy 2015 a.o.) and those claiming this agreement is a result of a postsyntactic operation that occurs after linearization and hence is sensitive to the linear distance between two syntactic elements (among these, Bhatt & Walkow 2013, Marušič et al 2015). We present a strong argument against strictly syntactic theories of conjunct agreement that leverages experimental work on BCS conjunct agreement and builds on data in Aljović & Begović (2015).
