Exploring the role of open educational practices in transforming the face of adult education in Ohangwena region of Namibia : master's thesis
Lasarus Nghifindwako Hakwaake, 2025, master's thesis

Abstract: Namibia was colonised for more than 30 years until early 1989 when it gained its independence. As many adults do not get opportunity to get formal education. Soon after independence the National Literacy Programme of Namibia was introduced to provide a basic literacy and numeracy to individuals who missed out of education during liberation struggle. Up to date, the adult literacy programmes were as it was introduced in 1992 without much improvement. Limited access, materials and inflexible schedules are significant barriers. Open Educational Practices (OEP) are recognised globally as means to improve delivery, practices, and quality of adult education. This study aims to explores open educational practices on how it can transform adult education by creating access, improve programmess through open educational resources and open education policies. The study used mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative and focus group discussion on data collection. The findings indicate that open educational practices can effectively improve adult education programmes in Namibia by providing flexible, inclusive, market-driven curricula accessible to various learning opportunities. The study proposed innovative technological approaches through open educational practices to use mobile learning applications, e-learning practices, blended learning and learning management systems to transform adult education and lifelong learning in Namibia.

Gospodarski odnosi med mestom Trst in kraškim zaledjem: primer Senožeč : predavanje na panelu Kulturne, družbene in gospodarske povezave med mestom in podeželjem v 19. in 20. stoletju, v okviru konference èStoria, International History Festival, Gorica, Italija, 1. junij 2025
Nikita Peresin Meden, 2025, unpublished conference contribution

Abstract: Predstavitev poudarja raznolikost gospodarskih odnosov med lokalnim prebivalstvom Senožeč in mestom Trst, ki so bili plodoviti vsaj od 14. stoletja dalje. Mlekarno so v letih 1927/28 modernizirali. Mlekarna predstavlja primer uspešnega gospodarskega sodelovanja zaledja z mestom.

The role of presentation modality in sentence processing
Daria Chernova, Artem Novozhilov, Natalia Slioussar, 2022, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The question of whether listening comprehension is more or less costly than reading comprehension remains open. We investigate whether the effects of grammar complexity are the same in reading and listening sentences. We show that presentation mode has no effect on comprehension accuracy but affects response times. In both modes, the most difficult constructions to comprehend and the longest constructions to process were the same which demonstrates that the cost of syntactic processing is not affected by presentation modality.

Sentence comprehension assessment in Russian
Daria Chernova, Artem Novozhilov, Natalia Slioussar, 2021, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: We developed a Sentence Comprehension Test in Russian for syntactic competence assessment. It includes 60 unambiguous grammatically complex sentences of several types with comprehension questions aimed to test effective syntactic processing. The test does not show ceiling effects with adult native speakers. The results of the test correlate with verbal working memory span.

The Pierre Auger Observatory open data
V. Scherini, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2025, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: During almost 20 years of regular data acquisition, the Pierre Auger Observatory, the world's largest facility for measuring ultra-high energy cosmic rays, has collected a vast and diverse amount of data covering complementary research fields from astroparticle and fundamental physics to space weather science. The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to research data since its foundation. Since then, a gradual release process has been initiated, and a dedicated task force has been established to implement and sustain this effort over the long term. In line with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles, the mandate of the task force includes the selection of data samples and the documented translation of in-house analyses codes into popular and available software for easy exploration and manipulation of the data. The Pierre Auger Open Data Portal was launched in February 2021 and contains 10% of the cosmic-ray data and 100% of the atmospheric and space-weather data. Since its initial release, the Portal has been extended and updated with new data samples. It also includes a detailed catalog of the showers created by the highest-energy particles and an outreach section aimed at engaging the general public in cosmic-ray science. The foreseen increase of the fraction of released cosmic-ray data to 30% and the inclusion of new detectors will further boost the scientific community's interest in the Observatory's data and their use for education and outreach initiatives.

The core software and simulation activities for data analysis at the Pierre Auger Observatory
Eva Santos, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2025, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory, located near the town Malargüe in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, is the largest cosmic-ray detector in existence, covering an area of 3000 sq. km. The upgraded Observatory, in Phase II of operations, consists of a surface array of 1660 stations combining water Cherenkov, scintillator, and radio detectors. A subset of stations also includes underground muon detectors. Additionally, fluorescence detectors located at four sites overlook the array. The science goals for the enhanced Observatory include the measurement of the properties of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays with large statistics and high sensitivity to the primary composition. The Observatory is also sensitive to photons and neutrinos at the highest energies, allowing it to participate in multi-messenger studies. The Auger Offline Framework provides the tools to perform detailed simulations, using the Geant 4 toolkit, of all components of the Observatory and the analysis of both data and simulated events. It proved to have the flexibility needed to evolve during the lifetime of the Observatory, to accommodate new sub-detectors and, recently, changes to the station readout electronics. A new challenge is interfacing the framework with Machine Learning tools for both the development and execution of neural-network-based algorithms. Independent of the framework, CORSIKA 7 is used to simulate particles, fluorescence light, and radio signals produced by air showers. The production of simulations is coordinated centrally to provide standard libraries for analyses and to optimize the use of computing resources. We will describe the evolution and status of the Offline Framework and the tools used to coordinate the simulation efforts. We will also discuss the challenges of the massive simulation efforts and the resources consumed to provide the simulation libraries required by the Collaboration.
