Orography‐induced atmospheric small‐scale waves during Bora using lidar observations and numerical simulations
Longlong Wang, Marija Bervida, Samo Stanič, Luca Patruno, Wenjun Dong, Daru Chen, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Atmospheric flow of cold air over mountain barriers in the Alpine region often gives a rise to strong and gusty downslope wind, Bora. Such flows are often accompanied by atmospheric waves, generated by the flow passing an elevated barrier. Such phenomenon can only rarely be observed visually and can generally not be reliably reproduced by simplified numerical models. Orography‐induced atmospheric small‐scale waves were experimentally observed on 25 January 2019 during a Bora outbreak in the Vipava valley, Slovenia. A vertical scanning lidar, positioned at the lee side of the Trnovski gozd mountain and a fixed direction lidar, 5 km apart in the Vipava valley, were used to characterize the density field. The flow exhibited a stationary jump after the mountain ridge and, superimposed, an oscillatory flow pattern. High‐resolution numerical simulations complemented the observations and supported experimental results on the flow periodicity but also on the wave structures and propagation characteristics.

Outreach, education, and communication initiatives at the Pierre Auger Observatory
V. Scherini, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2024, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has a long tradition of outreach that engages a wide range of people of all ages worldwide. In Malargüe, Argentina, the heart of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the Visitor Center offers a permanent interactive exhibition. Every November Collaboration meeting, we organize a Science Fair where Argentinian students from across the country can present their works and talk with the scientists at the site, motivating youngsters to pursue a career in Science. We also participate in the local parade, commemorating the foundation of Malargüe. We have developed numerous activities and interactive tools, including a 3-D event display. We have an open data policy and share them according to FAIR principles. Recently, we joined the International Masterclasses within the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, using a framework similar to the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. In this contribution, we summarize all of our Outreach activities.

Water stress impacts on grapevine functioning and possible adaptation measures : lecture at the winter school, organized in the frame of an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), University of Udine, 4. 2. 2025
Jan Reščič, 2025, invited lecture at foreign university

Abstract: Europe is the continent which is heating up with the highest speed. In viticulture every year we face extreme weather events, from higher rainfalls to droguth periods. It is therefore important to know what water stress (lack of water) is and how it impacts the physiology and metabolism of grapevine plants. In addition in the lecture, main measures on how to adapt the viticulture to water stress, are presented and discussed.

Weak evidence for heritable changes in response to selection by aphids in Arabidopsis accessions
Marc W. Schmid, Klara Kropivšek, Samuel E. Wuest, Bernhard Schmid, Ueli Grossniklaus, 2025, other component parts

Abstract: Abstract In plants, transgenerational inheritance of certain epialleles has been observed but experimental evidence for selection of epigenetic variation independent of genetic variation is scarce. We extended an experiment simulating selection in response to herbivory inArabidopsis thalianato assess a potential contribution of epigenetic variation to the selected phenotypes within three accessions. To minimize maternal effects, we grew offspring from replicate populations and their ancestors for two generations in a common environment and assessed the phenotypes in the second generation. We found weak evidence for the selection of epigenetic variation: bolting time differed significantly in one accession. Significant differences between populations and maternal lines suggested random residual or novel genetic and/or epigenetic variation. Our results are in conflict with those of a recent study reporting that environment-induced heritable variation is common inArabidopsis. Reanalyzing the data from that study showed that the reported findings resulted from a mix-up of accessions and thus reflected genetic rather than epigenetic variation between accessions. To avoid future misinterpretations of studies investigating epigenetic inheritance, we provide guidelines to design experiments that differentiate between epigenetic and genetic variation and distinguish standing variation fromde novovariation acquired during an experiment.
