45. Mastering the growth of antimonene on ▫$Bi_2Se_3$▫ : strategies and insightsRoberto Flammini, Conor Hogan, Stefano Colonna, Fabio Ronci, Mauro Satta, Marco Papagno, Ziya S. Aliev, Sergey V. Eremeev, Zipporah Rini Benher, Sandra Gardonio, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Antimonene, the two-dimensional phase of antimony, appears in two distinct allotropes when epitaxially grown on Bi2Se3: the puckered asymmetric washboard (α) and buckled honeycomb (β) bilayer structures. As-deposited antimony films exhibit varying proportions of single α and β structures. We identify the conditions necessary for ordered, pure-phase growth of single to triple β-antimonene bilayers. Additionally, we determine their electronic structure, work function, and characteristic core-level binding energies, offering an explanation for the relatively large chemical shifts observed among the different phases. This study not only establishes a protocol for achieving a single β phase of antimonene but also provides key signatures for distinguishing between the different allotropes using standard spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. 46. 48. A 1.8 m class pathfinder Raman LIDAR for the northern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory : technical designOtger Ballester, O. Blanch Bigas, Joan Boix, Paolo G. Calisse, Anna Campoy-Ordaz, Sidika Merve Çolak, Darko Kolar, Samo Stanič, Marko Zavrtanik, Miha Živec, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: This paper presents the technical design of the pathfinder Barcelona Raman LIDAR (pbrl) for the northern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (Northern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO-N)) located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM)). The pBRL is developed for continuous atmospheric characterization, essential for correcting high-energy gamma-ray observations captured by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The LIDAR consists of a steerable telescope with a 1.8 m parabolic mirror and a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with frequency doubling and tripling. It emits at wavelengths of 355 nm and 532 nm to measure aerosol scattering and extinction through two elastic and Raman channels. Built upon a former Cherenkov Light Ultraviolet Experiment (Cherenkov Light Ultraviolet Experiment (CLUE)) telescope, the pBRL’s design includes a Newtonian mirror configuration, a coaxial laser beam, a near-range system, a liquid light guide and a custom-made polychromator. During a one-year test at the ORM, the stability of the LIDAR and semi-remote-controlled operations were tested. This pathfinder leads the way to designing a final version of a Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) Raman LIDAR which will provide real-time atmospheric monitoring and, as such, ensure the necessary accuracy of scientific data collected by the CTAO-N telescope array. 50. Towards a sustainable energy future : evaluating Arundo donax L. in continuous anaerobic digestion for biogas productionKarlo Špelić, Mario Panjicko, Gregor Drago Zupančič, Anamarija Lončar, Ivan Brandić, Ivana Tomić, Ana Matin, Tajana Krička, Vanja Jurišić, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Abstract
In response to the EU's REPowerEU initiative (COM (2022) 108) which encourages an increase in biogas production by 20% in member states by 2030 to boost energy independence, it has become essential to identify sustainable alternatives to traditional feedstocks for biogas production, especially in the EU Member states where there is still high dependence on corn silage as the main raw material in biogas plants. While corn silage, predominantly used in the European biogas plants today, serves primarily for the livestock sector, alternative sources need to be explored. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of Arundo donax, a perennial energy crop, as an alternative feedstock in a continuous anaerobic process. The biogas yield and its quality, characterized by CH4, CO2, H2S and O2 content, were determined during a continuous process with A. donax, compared with two mixed feedstocks of A. donax and corn silage over a 5‐month period in a continuous anaerobic digestion process. The results revealed that A. donax exhibits a biogas yield and methane content comparable to corn silage, indicating its potential as a viable and sustainable alternative feedstock for biogas production.
