21. Representation of Africa among the Slovenes from 1850 to 1941 : dissertationAnja Polajnar, 2025, doctoral dissertation Abstract: This dissertation undertakes a comprehensive exploration of the historical development of the representation of Africa from the mid-nineteenth century to the beginning of the Second World War, with the primary objective of deepening the understanding of external influences that shaped Slovenes' perceptions of foreigners and the portrayal of the “Other.” The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of how Africa was portrayed in major Slovenian print media, within the broader context of activities spanning from 1850 to the beginning of the Second World War. By examining historical relations between Slovenes and Africans, the study aims to shed light on contemporary issues related to intercultural dialogue and the propagation of stereotypes about foreign cultures. The research reveals how dominant representations in Slovenia contributed to the construction of the image of Africa within its historical framework, dividing the research into two distinct eras. The first era, which covers time when the area that is nowadays Slovenia was under the Austrian Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), witnessed the publication of numerous articles in the Slovenian press, including notable outlets such as Zgodnja Danica, Slovenec, Slovenski narod and Domoljub, as well as textbooks for geography and history. The second era (1918–1941), when Slovenia was part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, another missionary publication of the St. Peter Claver Society for African Missions publishing the magazines Odmev iz Afrike and Zamorski otrok (later Zamorček), the daily press Slovenec, Slovenski narod and Domoljub, and geography and history textbooks were analyzed. The focus of the study is to analyze representations in the press and to uncover the formation of the concept of the “Other” and how this “Other” was perceived by Slovenes. Using a critical, chronological, and comparative approach, the research examines the emergence of stereotypes, drawing on insights from disciplines such as social psychology and cultural anthropology. Ultimately, the thesis aims to provide valuable insights into the construction of perceptions, the evolution of stereotypes, and the dynamics of intercultural dialogue in the context of African representation in the Slovenian society. 22. Land in the common use in the 19th century : the case of the manor of Duino in the Karst regionNikita Peresin Meden, 2025, doctoral dissertation Abstract: Common land was, until land relief in 1848, mostly owned by the landlords and was managed and used by them and the village communities. This land generally comprised the less fertile and more remote areas, such as pastures and forests. The rights to use the latter were vital for the rural population, who depended in particular on common pasturage and wood, but also on leaves and other natural resources.
The dissertation focuses on the 19th century and the early 20th century, up to the First World War. Although the second half of the 18th century is also considered in the interests of a comprehensive study. The presentation and interpretation of the state and changes of the common lands in the provinces of Carniola and Gorizia-Gradisca is followed by an in-depth case study of the area of the manor of Duino and after 1848 of the District Governorship of Sežana. Here, research focuses primarily on the long- standing official and unofficial processes by which common land was divided into private ownership or individual use. After 1848, the latter became the property of the village communities or the newly formed political municipalities. The legal status of the land and the role of the main actors (communities, mayors, beneficiaries, authorities) in these processes are therefore examined. This emphasises the socio- economic role of common land rights, which ultimately led to overexploitation and violations of land use restrictions (i.e. afforestation laws). The dissertation offers an original study as well as an in-depth analysis and interpretation of archival material that has not yet been studied or published.
The problematic and unclear legal status of common land was the cause of numerous conflicts and controversies in the past, which were intensified by the existential importance of the land and peasant mentality. This situation was exacerbated in the 19th century, and was reflected in the various forms of legal status of common land or its shares after division. The use of common land was becoming even more restricted and the claims to the shares were all but obvious. Both use and entitlement were not free, as is often assumed. The beneficiaries paid and sometimes even overpaid for their rights. In the dissertation, we have outlined the various conditions for entitlement to common land or shares of common land, and interpreted the process of its division into private or common property. We have established that common land was divided into ownerships mainly from the mid-19th century onwards,
which was linked to the land relief during 1848. It should be noted that it was divided into individual use before, and also after the mid-19th century. However, it was later more difficult for the authorities to approve this kind of division, as it did not comply with land relief legislation. As a result, such divisions eventually took place unofficially. Administrative reorganisations in the 19th century brought even more confusion to the process. The issue of unclear status accompanied and conditioned development on common land in the past, and it is legislation at state and local levels that has played and continues to play the greatest role in the management of common land. 24. Sodbe zahodnoslovenskih govorcev so primerjane z osrednjeslovenskim vzorcem. 29. Vzpostavitev strežnika in sistema za obveščanje zaposlenih : magistrsko deloDean Trojer Smrečnik, 2025, master's thesis Abstract: Magistrsko delo opisuje postopek izdelave podatkovno-informacijskega strežnika in njegove implementacije v prakso.
Reconstructing air-shower observables using a universality-based modelMaximilian Stadelmaier, Andrej Filipčič, Jon Paul Lundquist, Shima Ujjani Shivashankara, Samo Stanič, Serguei Vorobiov, Danilo Zavrtanik, Marko Zavrtanik, 2025, published scientific conference contribution Abstract: Air-Shower universality describes the regularity in the longitudinal, lateral, and energy distributions of electromagnetic shower particles, as motivated by solutions of the cascade equations. To reconstruct air-shower observables from ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, we employ a universality-based model of shower development that incorporates hadronic particle components. Depending on the input parameters, the model can be used, for example, to estimate the depth of the shower maximum or the number of muons on event level. In this context, we present the expected performance for the reconstruction using air-shower simulations and data from the Pierre Auger Observatory.
