54. Combined effects of early season leaf removal and climatic conditions on aroma precursors in ‘Sauvignon blanc’ grapesPaolo Sivilotti, Rachele FALCHI, Jose Carlos Herrera, Branka Škvarč, Lorena Butinar, Melita Sternad Lemut, Marijan Bubola, Paolo SABBATINI, Klemen Lisjak, Andreja Vanzo, 2017, original scientific article Abstract: Early leaf removal around the cluster zone is a common technique applied in cool climate viticulture, to regulate yield components and improve fruit quality. Despite the increasing amount of information on early leaf removal and its impact on total soluble solids, anthocyanins and polyphenols, less is known regarding aroma compounds. In order to verify the hypothesis that defoliation, applied before or after flowering, could impact the biosynthesis of thiol precursors, we performed a two year (2013 and 2014) experiment on Sauvignon blanc. We provided evidence that differential accumulation of thiols precursors in berries is affected by the timing of defoliation and this impact was related to modifications in biosynthetic pathway. Furthermore, the possible interaction between leaf removal treatment and seasonal weather conditions, and its effect on the biosynthesis of volatile precursors are discussed. Our results suggested that in Sauvignon blanc the relative proportion of 4-S-glutathionyl-4-methylpentan-2-one (G-4MSP) and 3-S-glutathionylhexan-1-ol (G-3SH) precursors can be affected by defoliation, and this could be related to the induction of two specific genes encoding glutathione-S-transferases (VvGST3 and VvGST5), while no significant effects on basic fruit chemical parameters, polyphenols and methoxypyrazines were ascertained under our experimental conditions. 55. Heart rate variability and nonlinear dynamic analysis in patients with stress-induced cardiomyopathyGoran Krstačić, Gianfranco Parati, Dragan Gamberger, Paolo Castiglioni, Antonija Krstačić, Robert Steiner, 2012, original scientific article Abstract: Complexity-based analyses may quantify abnormalities in heart rate variability (HRV). The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and prognostic significances of dynamic HRV changes in patients with stress-induced cardiomyopathy Takotsubo syndrome (TS) by means of linear and nonlinear analysis. Patients with TS were included in study after complete noninvasive and invasive cardiovascular diagnostic evaluation and compared to an age and gender matched control group of healthy subjects. Series of R–R interval and of ST–T interval values were obtained from 24-h ECG recordings after digital sampling. HRV analysis was performed by ‘range rescaled analysis’ to determine the Hurst exponent, by detrended fluctuation analysis to quantify fractal longrange correlation properties, and by approximate entropy to assess time-series predictability. Short- and long-term fractal-scaling exponents were significantly higher in patients with TS in acute phases, opposite to lower approximate entropy and Hurst exponent, but all variables normalized in a few weeks. Dynamic HRV analysis allows assessing changes in complexity features of HRV in TS patients during the acute stage, and to monitor recovery after treatment, thus complementing traditional ECG and clinically analysis. 59. Pursuing the stabilisation of crystalline nanostructured magnetic manganites through a green low temperature hydrothermal synthesisArianna Minelli, Paolo Dolcet, Stefano Diodati, Sandra Gardonio, Claudia Innocenti, Denis Badocco, Stefano Gialanella, Paolo Pastore, Luciano Pandolfo, Andrea Caneschi, Angela Trapanati, Silvia Gross, 2017, original scientific article Abstract: A quick, easy and green water-based synthesis protocol involving coprecipitation of oxalates combined with hydrothermal treatment resulted in the crystallisation of nanostructured manganites at a relatively low temperature (180 °C). The subcritical hydrothermal approach was shown to play a key role in stabilising phases which are generally achieved at much higher temperatures and under harsher conditions, thus disclosing an exciting alternative for their synthesis. Through this mild wet chemistry approach, the compounds CuMnO2, ZnMn2O4 and ZnMnO3 were synthesised as nanocrystalline powders. Noticeably, the optimised route proved to be effective in stabilising the exotic polymorph cubic spinel ZnMnO3 in pure form. This is particularly notable, as very few records concerning this compound are available in the literature. The compounds were fully characterised from compositional, structural, morphological and magnetic points of view. 60. Cardiac stem cell aging and heart failureDaniela Cesselli, Aneta Aleksova, Elisa Mazzega, Angela Caragnano, Antonio Paolo Beltrami, 2017, review article Abstract: A side effect of the medical improvements of the last centuries is the progressive aging of the world population, which is estimated to reach the impressive number of 2 billion people with more than 65 years by 2050. As a consequence, age-related diseases, such as heart failure, will affect more and more patients in the next years. To understand the biological bases of these diseases will be a crucial task in order to find better treatments, and possibly slow age-related morbidity and mortality.
Cardiac stem cells have been at the center of a heated debate and their potential involvement in cardiac homeostasis has been questioned. In this review, we summarize evidence obtained by independent groups, on different animal models and humans, that strongly support the important role played by immature, cardiac resident cells in the cardioprotection against heart failure.
