Biodiversity communication through art in the form of digital games and the communication potential of related online communities : diploma thesis
Tijana Mijušković, 2023, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: Biodiversity communication is becoming increasingly important in today’s age, as climate change and other factors contribute to the rapid decline of species and ecosystems across the globe. Art is growing in popularity as a tool of reaching people regarding environmental causes, as they convey the emotional, human side of this endeavor in a way that typical science communication isn’t able to. Digital games, arguably among the most persuasive art forms and now widely accessible, are well suited to educating as well as emotionally influencing their players. Online communities frequently form around games, providing a platform for discussion and potentially increasing the games’ total potential for biodiversity communication. In this thesis, the content of eight games from Steam’s list of top-rated games tagged with ‘Nature’ was analyzed, and seven online communities related to these games on the Discord and Reddit social media platforms were surveyed. There was found to be a number of different approaches among the eight games towards educating players about biodiversity and/or its conservation, and the survey of communities showed care towards and interest in biodiversity-related discussion and conservation gaming itself, as well as the fact that games and related discussion in online communities has potential to educate players and positively influence their interest in biodiversity topics. Online game-related communities may offer an additional avenue of approaching game players about biodiversity for science communicators, researchers, and game developers alike.

Multiple allocation p-hub location problem for content placement in VoD services: a differential evolution based approach
Soumen Atta, Goutam Sen, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: In video-on-demand (VoD) services, large volumes of digital data are kept at hubs which are spatially distributed over large geographic areas and users are connected to these hubs based on their demands. In this article, we consider a large database of video files, that are pre-partitioned to multiple segments based on the demand patterns of users. These segments are restricted to be located only in hubs. Here, users are allowed to be allocated to multiple hubs and all hubs are assumed to be connected with each other. We jointly decide the location of hubs, the placement of segments to these hubs and then the assignment of users to these hubs as per their demand patterns and finally, we find the optimal paths to route the demands of users for different segments having the objective of minimizing the total routing cost. In this article, a differential evolution (DE) based method is proposed to solve the problem. The proposed DE-based method utilizes an efficient function to evaluate the objective value of a candidate solution to the proposed problem. It also incorporates two problem-specific solution refinement techniques for faster convergence. Instances of the problem are generated from the real world movie database and the proposed method is applied to these instances and the performance is evaluated against the benchmark results obtained from CPLEX.

My Sister Who Travels
Martina Caruso, exhibition catalogue

Abstract: This exhibition offers the viewer new perspectives on this genre, through the landscapes in the work of six women artists. Landscape art is often considered in Romantic terms. Human analogies between the concrete world and the inner world are frequently drawn, and the open space of the land can be seen as a space for imagining, for thinking freely. But these public spaces are also contested sites, layered with histories and the implicit legacies of control, power, occupation and exclusion.

Conversing with Ghosts of the Previously Tamed
Martina Caruso, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: In this article I argue that representing animal-human relationality in contemporary video art shows how certain artists are addressing recent philosophical perspectives such as object-oriented ontology within a posthuman and post-anthropocentric paradigm. While the philosophies that treat the posthuman, from object-oriented ontology to speculative realism and vital materialism, imply a utopian refusal of hierarchy between human and non-human existence, artists may be hard-pressed to represent the described new order, which, at the moment, does not exist socially or politically.

Barve v filmu

Efficient and secured video encryption scheme for lightweight devices
Rajan Gupta, Neeharika Chaudhary, Anika Garg, Saibal K. Pal, 2014, original scientific article

Abstract: Technological advancements in the field of multimedia have made access to information effortless. As information is available easily to everyone so it is quite essential to shield secretive data. This paper focuses on encrypting videos using confusion and diffusion at various levels. Chaotic skew tent map and nested piecewise linear chaotic map which are categorized under piecewise linear maps have been used for the processing. Two skew tent maps are cross coupled with each other to generate random values. The binary sequences are generated by comparing the outputs of the cross coupled piecewise linear chaotic maps. The generated binary sequence is used for bit level diffusion. Further, pixels are shuffled to provide higher level of encryption. The ciphered video is of the same size as that of plain video. The proposed scheme is of low complexity and provides high level encryption. The security analysis of the technique has been carried out and better results have been found regarding the statistical and differential attacks. The code development has been done in MATLAB and the scheme is applicable in areas like Video Encryption, Steganography and Digital Watermarking on various lightweight devices.
