1961. “Monolingual and bilingual use of the maximize presupposition principle”Penka Stateva, invited lecture at foreign university Abstract: This talk is an experimental investigation of the status of Maximize presupposition as an operative pragmatic principle that regulates speakers’ preferences among semantically equivalent attitude reports. We present results from two acquisitional studies. The first study explores sensitivity of 5 and 7-year old Slovenian-speaking children to the principle from a developmental perspective. The second study examines the influence of bilingualism on the use of this principle by comparing monolingual Slovenian and Italian children to early bilingual children acquiring both languages. The results suggest that while even the youngest children demonstrate adherence to Maximize presupposition in an adult-like manner, bilingualism affects performance in pragmatic tasks and constitutes a potential advantage in the relevant area. Preparation of porous [alpha]-Fe[sub]2O[sub]3 thin films for efficient photoelectrocatalytic degradation of basic blue 41 dyeManel Machreki, Takwa Chouki, Mitja Martelanc, Lorena Butinar, Branka Mozetič Vodopivec, Saim Emin, 2021, original scientific article Abstract: A novel method was developed for the preparation of porous hematite (α-Fe2O3) thin films. First, a solution containing iron precursor was spin-coated on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate and later short heat-treated at 750 °C. The prepared α-Fe2O3 thin films were applied as dual-function catalyst in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation and textile dye degradation studies. For the first time, α-Fe2O3 thin films were used in efficient PEC degradation of a textile dye (Basic Blue 41 – B41) using in-situ generated reactive chlorine species. In comparison with photocatalytic and electrocatalytic approaches, the PEC technique allows faster degradation of B41 dye at an applied bias potential of 1.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and under visible light illumination. In the presence of Cl− using the PEC approach the degradation of B41 reaches 99.8%. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV–VIS system confirmed the degradation of B41 dye using PEC. Gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was used to study the by-products obtained during PEC degradation. Chemical oxygen demand analyses confirmed that the mineralization level of B41 is in the order of 68%. The α-Fe2O3 films developed in this study give a higher level of PEC degradation efficiency compared to other iron oxide-based systems. Developmental aspects of Maximize Presupposition: a view from SlovenianPenka Stateva, invited lecture at foreign university Abstract: n this talk I will present the results of an experimental study of young children's acquisition and use of the pragmatic principle Maximize Presupposition in the context of the propositional attitude predicates (equivalent to) know and think. We use a felicity judgement task to test the ability of 5- and 7-year-old Slovenian-speaking children to derive the factive presupposition of know and the pragmatic inference trigerred by think in accord with Maximize Presupposition. The older group of children outperformed the younger group in both conditions manifesting a ceiling performance, while the younger group showed a more mixed pattern. Our results suggest that the anti-factivity inference is mastered on a par with the ability to derive the presupposition of factivity, as predicted by contemporary pragmatic theories. The discussion will also touch upon questions about the influence of bilingualism on developing pragmatic abilities, negative transfer in the domain of pragmatics and its dependence on cross-linguistic morpho-syntactic variation among translational equivalents. used to process and analyze experimental data. While modern experiments allow study of
single molecules in vivo, corresponding theories date back to the early 1950s and require an
essential update to include the recent significant progress in the description of water. The
Hamiltonian formulation of the Zimm-Bragg model we propose includes a simplified, yet
explicit model of water-polypeptide interactions that transforms into the equivalent implicit
description after performing the summation of solvent degrees of freedom in the partition
function. Here we show that our model fits very well to the circular dichroism experimental
data for both heat and cold denaturation and provides the energies of inter- and intra-
molecular H-bonds, unavailable with other processing methods. The revealed delicate
balance between these energies determines the conditions for the existence of cold dena-
