Determination of Dissolved Iron Redox Species in Freshwater Sediment using DGT Technique Coupled to BDS
Hanna Budasheva, Aleksander Kravos, Dorota Korte, Arne Bratkič, Yue Gao, Mladen Franko, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: In this work we have developed a novel method for determination of iron redox species by the use of diffusive gradients in thin-film (DGT) technique coupled to photothermal beam deflection spectroscopy (BDS). The combination of both methods achieved low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.14 μM for Fe (II) ions. The total Fe concentration determined in the Vrtojbica river sediment (Slovenia, Rožna Dolina, 5000 Nova Gorica) was 49.3 μgL–1. The Fe (II) and Fe (III) concentra- tion amounted to 12.8 μgL–1 and 39.9 μgL–1, respectively. Such an approach opens new opportunities for monitoring the content of iron species in natural waters and sediments and provides highly sensitive chemical analysis and an accurate qualitative and quantitative characteristic of the materials under study.

Properties of tropospheric aerosols observed over southwest Slovenia
Tingyao He, Yingying Chen, Samo Stanič, Klemen Bergant, Fei Gao, Dengxin Hua, 2018, original scientific article

Abstract: From August to October 2010 lidar measurements of aerosols in the troposphere were performed at Otlica observatory, Slovenia, using a vertical scanning elastic lidar. The lidar data sample, which contains 38 nighttime vertical profiles of the mean aerosol extinction, was combined with continuous ozone concen- tration (O3), particulate matter concentrations (PM) and daily radiosonde data. The obtained radiosonde- and lidar-derived heights of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), which varied considerably from day to day, were found to be in good agreement. The mean values of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 355 nm, were calculated separately for the ABL and for the free troposphere (FT). A ten-fold increase of the FT AOD was observed during the days with predicted presence of Saharan dust above the lidar site. To correlate AOD values with the type and origin of aerosols, backward trajectories of air-masses above Otlica were modeled using the HYSPLIT model and clustered. High ABL AOD values were found to be correlated with local circulations and slowly approaching air masses from the Balkans and low values with northwestern flows. The highest values correlated with southwestern flows originating in northern Africa.

Anomaly detection in processing of complex syntax by early L2 learners
Arthur Stepanov, Sara Andreetta, Penka Stateva, Adam Zawiszewski, Itziar Laka, 35, original scientific article

Abstract: This study investigates the processing of long-distance syntactic dependencies by native speakers of Slovenian (L1) who are advanced learners of Italian as a second language (L2), compared with monolingual Italian speakers. Using a self-paced reading task, we compare sensitivity of the early-acquired L2 learners to syntactic anomalies in their L2 in two empirical domains: (1) syntactic islands, for which the learners’ L1 and L2 grammars provide a converging characterization, and (2) verb–clitic constructions, for which the respective L1 and L2 grammatical descriptions diverge. We find that although our L2 learners show native-like processing patterns in the former, converging, grammatical domain, they may nevertheless perform non-native-like with respect to syntactic phenomena in which the L1 and L2 grammars do not align, despite the early age of L2 acquisition. Implications for theories of L2 acquisition and endstate are discussed.

Christianization and Love of Homeland in Prešeren and Bevk : A Comparison of Motifs and Values in The Baptism on the Savica and Umirajoči bog Triglav (The Dying God Triglav)
Zoran Božič, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: Both texts were created during pivotal moments of Slovene history: Prešeren’s poem at a time of German political, economic, and cultural supremacy and newly emerging demands for a united Slovenia, and Bevk’s during the time of Italian fascism and the occupation of the Slovene Primorska region. At first glance, Prešeren’s poetry of high Romanticism and Bevk’s supposedly trivial work have nothing in common apart from the topic of paganism and Christianity. However, they both convey a hidden message that could not be stated outright due to the censorship policies of the authorities at the time, to condemnation of aggressive foreign rulers, to appeals to national unity, to heightened patriotic consciousness, and to a relationship with nature that establishes the here and now as the highest value, and not the hereafter. The comparison and interpretation presented here sees in Bevk’s work a direct connection to Prešeren’s poem, its thematic continuation, temporal adaptation, and interpretation.

Ultra-Fast-VUV Photoemission Study of UV Excited 2-Nitrophenol

Abstract: The initial deactivation pathways of gaseous 2-nitrophenol excited at 268 nm were investigated by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) with femtosecond-VUV light, produced by a monochromatized high harmonic generation source. TRPES allowed us to obtain new, valuable experimental information about the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of 2-nitrophenol in the gas phase. In accord with recent ab initio on-the-fly nonadiabatic molecular dynamic simulations, our results validate the occurrence of an ultrafast intersystem crossing leading to an intermediate state that decays on a subpicosecond time scale with a branched mechanisms. Two decay pathways are experimentally observed. One probably involves proton transfer, leading to the most stable triplet aci-form of 2-nitrophenol; the second pathway may involve OH rotation. We propose that following intersystem crossing, an ultrafast fragmentation channel leading to OH or HONO loss could also be operative.
