Opis: The searches and observations of supernovae (SNe) have been motivated by the fact that they are exceptionally useful for various astrophysical and cosmological applications. Most prominently, Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia) have been used as distance indicators showing that the expansion rate of the Universe is accelerating. The strong gravitational lensing effect provides another powerful tool and occurs when a foreground mass distribution is located along the line of sight to a background source. It can happen so that galaxies and galaxy clusters can act as “gravitational telescopes”, boosting the faint signals from distant SNe and galaxies. Thanks to the magnification boost provided by the gravitational telescope, we are able to probe galaxies and SNe that otherwise would be undetectable. Therefore, the combination of the two tools, SNe and strong lensing, in the single phenomenon of strongly lensed SNe, provides a powerful simultaneous probe of several cosmological and astrophysical phenomena. By measuring the time delays of strongly lensed supernovae and having a high-quality strong lensing model of the galaxy cluster, it is possible to measure the Hubble constant with competitive precision. In this talk, I will present some of the past and recent results that have been possible due to the observations of strongly lensed supernovae and anticipate what we can expect in the future from the upcoming telescope surveys, such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Nancy G. Roman Space Telescope.

Time-series analysis of oxygen as an important environmental parameter for monitoring diversity hotspot ecosystems : an example of a river sinking into the karst underground

Opis: Predicting variations in dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) is important for management and environmental monitoring of aquatic ecosystems. Regression analyses and univariate and multivariate time-series analyses based on autoregressive methods were performed to investigate oxygen conditions in the Pivka River, Slovenia. The monitoring site was established upstream where the river sinks into the karst cave Postojnska jama, which hosts one of the richest subterranean faunas yet studied worldwide. It was found that abnormal variations of DO started to be noticeable at values of DO < 3 mg/L and became more pronounced until the ecosystem reached fully anoxic conditions. The abnormal fluctuations during the critical summer period were due to environmental conditions, organic load and resident biota. Predictions for future detection of anomalies in DO values were made from stable residuals of the measured data, and it was demonstrated that the model could be used to obtain a reliable estimate for a short period, such as one day. The example presented an analysis pipeline based on specific and established threshold DO values, and it is particularly important for ecosystems with diversity hotspots where prolonged low DO values can pose a threat to their biota.

Opis: S posledicami podnebnih sprememb se že nekaj časa soočamo tudi v slovenskem vinogradniškem prostoru. In čeprav vinska trta, zaradi globokega koreninskega sistema, velja za precej dobro prilagodljivo rastlino na pomanjkanje vode oziroma sušo, je za rast, rodnost in kakovost grozdja zelo pomembno kdaj, v kateri razvojni fazi se pojavi sušni stres ter koliko časa pomanjkanje vode traja. Prav tako, ni vsak sušni stres nujno škodljiv.

Self-adaptive amorphous ▫$CoO_xCl_y$▫ electrocatalyst for sustainable chlorine evolution in acidic brine

Opis: Electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction is of central importance in the chlor-alkali industry, but the chlorine evolution anode is largely limited by water oxidation side reaction and corrosion-induced performance decay in strong acids. Here we present an amorphous CoOxCly catalyst that has been deposited in situ in an acidic saline electrolyte containing Co2+ and Cl- ions to adapt to the given electrochemical condition and exhibits ~100% chlorine evolution selectivity with an overpotential of ~0.1 V at 10 mA cm−2 and high stability over 500 h. In situ spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations reveal that the electrochemical introduction of Cl- prevents the Co sites from charging to a higher oxidation state thus suppressing the O-O bond formation for oxygen evolution. Consequently, the chlorine evolution selectivity has been enhanced on the Cl-constrained Co-O* sites via the Volmer-Heyrovsky pathway. This study provides fundamental insights into how the reactant Cl-itself can work as a promoter toward enhancing chlorine evolution in acidic brine.

Spin model of water and post-processing of protein folding experiments

Opis: The presence of several distinct minima in nearest-neighbor potentials in polymers makes it possible to describe polymer conformations in terms of discrete isomeric states, naturally leading to spin language. Using this general approach, a decade ago we have suggested the Hamiltonian formulation for the Zimm and Bragg model of protein conformations [1,2]. Later we have augmented the model by an oversimplified spin model for water, resulting in both cold and hot denaturations [3]. We construct the Statistical Mechanics for the model and get access to its Thermodynamics. Resulting order parameter and specific heat expressions are successfully fit to available experimental data [4]. Thanks to solid and traceable theoretical foundations, the procedure provides better quality fits as compared to the state-of-the-art two-state model, routinely used to process protein folding experiments.

Štipendije za študij v tujini
Tina Škorjanc, druga izvedena dela

Opis: Financiranje celotnega dodiplomskega študija je v veliko državah sveta mogoče s pomočjo vladnih oz. državnih štipendij ciljne države ali s pomočjo financiranja, ki ga ponujajo univerze. Dr. Tina Škorjanc se bo v predavanju osredotočila na oba aspekta. Predstavila bo možnosti na Japonskem, v Južni Koreji, Rusiji, Nemčiji, Singapurju, Kanadi, Italiji in Franciji ter v ZDA in Združenih arabskih emiratih, kjer je študirala tudi sama. Možnosti financiranja dodiplomskega študija v tujini obstajajo tudi v Sloveniji, zato bo opisala nekaj tovrstnih opcij. Predstavila bo tudi program Vulcanus iz Japonske, program Erasmus, ki je Slovencem večinoma dobro poznan, in različne poletne šole. Delila bo svoje izkušnje iz poletne šole na Nizozemskem in z delavnice v Savdski Arabiji. Za konec predavanja bo povedala še nekaj o sistemu prijav, vpisnih pogojih in morebitnih dodatnih zahtevah, denimo certifikatih o znanju tujega jezika. Za sodelujoče bo zagotovo zelo koristna tudi možnost postavljanja vprašanj, na katera bo z veseljem odgovorila.

Povratna vozovnica – Združeni arabski emirati

Opis: Tina je 26. avgusta 2011 polna pričakovanj pristala v Združenih arabskih emiratih in ti so postali njen dom za skoraj desetletje. Na potopisnem predavanju bo spregovorila o tem, kako se je v pretežno muslimanski državi počutila kot študentka naravoslovja, kako ZAE spodbujajo razvoj kulturnih dejavnosti in zakaj je kar 80 % prebivalcev tujcev. In o znamenitostih: steklenih stolpnicah in blišču Dubaja, neskončnih puščavah Abu Dabija, konjih in kamelah za lepotna tekmovanja v Adžmanu, skalnih gorovjih v Ras Al Khaimah in Umm Al Quwainu ter lepotah Indijskega oceana v Fudžeiri.

Severovzhod ZDA skozi študentske oči

Opis: New York City – veliko jabolko – eno najbolj opevanih mest na svetu! Tina Škorjanc je kot dodiplomska študentka na New York University preživela en semester, kasneje pa na isti univerzi dokončala še prvi letnik doktorskega študija. V tem potopisnem predavanju nam bo predstavila, kako funkcionira ta največja privatna univerza v ZDA, kako je pridobila štipendije za tamkajšnji študij in kaj je počela v prostem času. Poleg glavnih znamenitosti Manhattana, kot so Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Central Park, kip svobode, metropolitanski muzej in stavba Empire State, bomo obiskali še manj znana okrožja New Yorka: Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island in zloglasni Bronx. Z avtobusom se bomo odpravili tudi v glavno mesto Združenih držav, Washington DC, na Niagarske slapove, v Boston in v Filadelfijo.
